Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
i was glued to the screen as usual for the full card the other day for the JJ v Takam bill.
Ben Davison was co-commentator/analyst for the fights. Im really not sure whether I liked it or not. Occasionally his observations were on point but more often that not he got on my tits with his 'thats better' 'thats nice' 'up and down' comments.
What did you gang think? was he more annoying than Bunceys interviews?

"that's nice"
i imagine he says this repeatedly for hours while staring in the mirror while tossing his hair back

Re: Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
I found it overkill. It was as if he was trying to sell himself by saying what the fighter should be doing rather than what he was doing. Overall an annoying experience for me.

I didn’t think he was anything special or as good as he thought he was but I didn’t hate it either.
I’m more easy going though as I don’t particularly dislike Adam Smith (again he’s not overly good either) and I used to like Jim Watt even though he was slated on here.

Watt ruined Hatton-Tszyu and Benn-Eubank II.

He didn’t ruin them for me but as I said I’m perhaps more relaxed about that kind of thing than some on here.
It’s been a couple of years since I listened to his comms on Hatton/Tszyu but I don’t remember having any issue at all with it.

Watt forced me to watch fights in silence

He just sounded like he was a trainer in the corner with a mic attached to his face..

A little too keen to show off his knowledge I thought, less is more sometimes. Sunny Edwards has been a good co-commentator recently.

And Froch v Groves 1 and considering how entertaining those three fights were you have to go some to ruin them.
Re: Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
Watt was my favorite commentator. His Benn vs Watson commentary sticks in my mind.

him and Reg for the Chavez - Rosario fight was probably the most perfect reading of a fight i think i have seen. there wasn't much technical input but how they gradually noted Chavez's increasing control and then dominance, the little signs from Rosario that he was getting the worst of it, it was great stuff.

Where was Woodhall ? Olympics ? Surely they could have got someone better than Davison as a sub ?

Absolutely. He loves showing off his ‘alleged’ boxing tactical knowledge. He commentated as if he was the cornermen and some could say he’s basically saying he’s a better trainer than them.

I think he's all right and he mainly talks sense.
The criticism that he seems a bit needy in trying to prove his boxing IQ are fair however.
Great hair.

I thank him for giving the boxing lexicon this highly nuanced take on a style of punch.
I was also taken by the 3 times he said it was important to “show the fish the bait”….. he must be cleverer and know more about boxing than me as I still don’t have a FACKING clue what he means….
Also Ben Davison looks like a walking talking Shampoo and conditioner advert with that effin Barnet of his!
Re: Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
I'd use the term 'trainer' loosely. Eddie Futch was a trainer.Emanuel Steward was a trainer.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑29 Jul 2021, 04:51 He just sounded like he was a trainer in the corner with a mic attached to his face..

You play a role like that and you're there to be shot at. Thought he did well personally.

Re: Ben Davison commentating on BT Sport - Was he all that?
He was absolutely f*cking awful. Desperate to show off how knowledgeable he is, clearly one of the greatest training brains we have ever seen - never stop banging on about it, lecturing anyone who would listen. A world class bore of the highest level.
