Steve Collins vs Roy Jones Jr

Post by HomicideHenry »

The one that got away...

I'll be as specific as possible:

1996-1997, although prior to that Collins tried to make fights with Roy Jones Jr but for whatever reason it never happened.

168 pound limit. 12 rounds.

Last Four Fights for Collins (4-0-0):

Nigel Benn (2x's)
Chris Eubank (2x's)

Last Four Fights for Jones (3-1-0):

Montell Griffin (2x's)
Mike McCallum
Bryant Bannon

How do you have it going? :box:

Also, had Collins not injured himself 10 days prior to his match with Calzaghe in 1997 how do you think that fight would have went?

That same logic was said when Collins fought Eubank (ie, too limited). I'm not saying he would have won, but, I don't think it'd of been the easy task people might think it was.

Collins was much better at 168 than at 160 .And he never lose at 168 pounds ,he had good skills, granite chin but he too slow for Roy ,too simple for Roy.Yeah he maybe would won 2 or 3 rounds in this but Roy would outclass him as well in another rounds.

My opinion.

Collins so wanted Jones - felt it was his night, his moment - I think Steve was off-his-head
He'd get his ears boxed off him and I am a Steve fan.

Jones, the Calzaghe question is a more interesting one. Being in the trenches with Collins would have been even more unpleasant than it was with Chris.

Yeah, but I don't like the dismissiveness. Virtually everyone Rocky Marciano fought was not only physically superior to him but were more skilled and faster than he was. Where there's a will there's a way.

Again, I'm not saying he'd win but I do think it'd be more competitive than people are thinking it would be.

I'll agree. The Calzaghe question is more intriguing. It's not the Calzaghe who was a dominant champion but a man still trying to prove himself to the world, and the WBO title was still seen as a minor title in those days. It'd of been a great contest.

Jones would out-box Collins from the outside behind his quick jabs and combinations to take a decision.
