It's already been over 3 years since the WBO called a mandatory. Effectively WBO are following the money and ignoring their own rule book. WBC/Whyte level corruption if you ask me.

Some people say Usyk hasn't done enough to earn a shot. Personally I think that is a biased view. He moved up knowing the WBO rules. And if that isn't good enough, his win against Chisora is on par with the majority of title challengers we have seen these last 3-4 years.

Maybe we should be asking what has Joe Joyce done to earn this shot at the mandatory position which Whyte was not given?

Joyce conclusively outmanned and stopped an undefeated, big, hard punching highly touted young heavyweight prospect in a fight where he was a significant underdog.

Usyk deserves his shot but has beaten a 32-9, 37 year old Chisora and a 39 year old Chazz Witherspoon who was 38-3 (checking his record he was stopped in 3 by Seth Mitchell!)in fights where he was the easy favourite thus far in his heavyweight career.

Fury-Joshua for all the marbles is the multimillion dollar fight we all want to see. It's going to happen. After the 1st fight, a few belts may fragment and go vacant. Will he fight then, or will he just take the year off?

Personally I just want to watch the best fights. Joyce-Usyk is a fight between 2 undefeated top 10 guys with a good backstory. It should be made.

Ukrainian heavyweight champion looks forward to the upcoming fight

Mandatory WBO heavyweight title contender Alexander Usyk (18-0, 13 KOs) and undefeated Briton Joe Joyce (12-0, 11 KOs) continue to stage a verbal battle on social media ahead of a potential interim WBO title fight.

The boxers almost simultaneously posted posts on Twitter that gave a hint of their upcoming fight.

Joyce addressed his promoter allegedly with the words:

“I can’t wait to get my hands on it again. allegedly, give me a Mustache. ”

The response from the Ukrainian was immediate. Usyk left a message by posting a thread of his fights.

JJ didnt have a massive ped story causing him any issues unlike DW and not for the first time - he had a long ban at the start of his pro days for it .

The timeline doesn't quite fit for that. WBO wrapped up their decision on Usyk/Whyte in June 2019. Whyte didn't have the massive ped story until he fought Rivas in July 2019.

Its either a ko for Joyce or a usyk decision. Joyce is a big boy that looks slow but always seems to land plus he has a granite chin. Im not so sure Usyk can avoid him for 12 rounds. I just can't see usyk beating top 10 heavyweights.

Usyk vs Joyce ‘at an impasse’ – Frank W

Plans for the eagerly-awaited Oleksandr Usyk vs Joe Joyce heavyweight showdown are at an impasse according to Frank W, as negotiations for Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua rumble on.

The WBO has ordered Usyk vs Joyce for its interim title and the spot as mandatory challenger for the belt current held by Joshua. If Fury vs Joshua isn’t finalised in a set time period though, the WBO will order Joshua to defend instead against the current mandatory – which is Usyk.

Pretty clear then that former cruiserweight king Usyk (18-0) will not be rushing into a fight with Joyce (12-0) while the slim possibility of going straight to Joshua still exists.
Fury vs Joshua brings impasse

Joyce’s promoter Frank W told BT Sport: “We got him in the position, we lobbied the WBO to get him into the position. The WBO called for the fight to be made between Usyk and Joe for the interim title.

“But everything’s at an impasse now. They’ve give a period of time to allow for the Tyson vs AJ fight to take place. If it doesn’t, then they’re going to to tell AJ that he’s gotta make his defence against his mandatory, who is Usyk.

“So Usyk doesn’t want to be getting involved in an interim – he just wants to go straight for the title. So we’re at a little bit of an impasse. Until we get this fight resolved between Tyson and AJ, we are where we are.

“I think that’s going to come to a head fairly soon. We’ve not had an offer that we feel is suitable. We’re awaiting an amended offer and once we get that, then all the interested parties can consider it. We’ve all got a will to make this fight happen, it’s a no-brainer for us to get it on. But it’s when it goes on, where it goes on and a couple of other issues that need to be resolved.

“Until we get at least a binding deal memo, we are where we are. So unfortunately Joe’s suffering. I wanna get Joe out, he had a good win, I’d have liked him to have fought on Saturday, I’d like to have him out by now. He will be out some time, no doubt about it, in June whatever happens. If it’s Usyk or not, he’ll be out.”

The man Joyce defeated in his last fight – the exciting Daniel Dubois – is also ready to return in a battle for the WBA interim title against Bogdan Dinu on June 5.

Dubois (now 15-1) suffered a fractured eye socket during that shock 10th-round knockout by Joyce, but is now fit again. Wḁṛṛḛṅ remains excited by his future prospects, but does admit ‘Dynamite’ will be under massive pressure to bounce back.

“He’s stepping up to the plate. Looking back to the fight he had with Joe Joyce and the terrible injury he sustained, a lot of people had their views on that – conflicting views. Some people thought that he didn’t have the heart, other people thought he did the right thing.

“He’s got a massive pressure on him now. When he comes back, people are gonna be looking at him even more so than he was as an undefeated fighter after how that fight ended.

“But you’ve got to take your hat off to him because it’s a fight he called for, he wanted, and if he comes through it he becomes the mandatory for the WBA heavyweight title. So everything’s at stake for him, it’s not like he stepped backwards. He’s moving forwards and obviously he’s gotta put the performance in and deliver. So there’s a lot of pressure on him for this fight.”

If you want to be confused even more then FW has just done an interview with SecondsOut. I would have rather Danny Flexen pushed him a little more but it doesn’t shed any light on anything - just made me think that FW is the last to know things.

Herring-Stevenson: WBO Orders August 9 Purse Bid Hearing, Split To Land In Stevenson's Favor

A purse bid hearing has been scheduled for August 9 to determine the promotional rights for the WBO junior lightweight title consolidation clash between Herring and Stevenson. The bout was officially ordered shortly after Stevenson’s most recent win this past June, only for talks to linger to the point of now serving at the mercy of the next-highest bidder. Top Rank—who promotes both boxers—was informed of the development on Monday.

Normally, Herring would be entitled to a larger split as the defending titlist, Section 14 (e) (1) of WBO Rules covering purse bid hearings.

However, a clause in the WBO by-laws that takes into consideration the fighters’ most recent purses has resulted in a ruling that will land heavily in Stevenson’s favor should there be at least one accepted bid during the assigned hearing next Monday.

“The division shall not be greater than 80/20 in any case and shall be calculated by the Championship Committee using a ratio based upon the average purse of each fighter’s last three (3) fights,” noted Batista-Salas. “The WBO may rely upon the purses reported to the WBO on the WBO Participant’s Promoter’s receipts for the fights that are used to calculate the Purse Division for this purpose. By way of example, if contestant A has had his last 3 purses of $1,000,000, $500,000, and $400,000 (a total of $1,900,000) and contestant B has had his last 3 purses of 1,000,000, $2,000,000, and $2,500,000 (a total of $5,500,000), the purse division would be $1,900,000/$7,400,000 or 25.68% for contestant A and$5,500,000/$7,400.00 or 74.32% for contestant B.

“Wherefore, having this Committee confirmed each fighter’s last three reported purses, and having the WBO World Championship Committee the power and authority conferred by its governing rules to establish purse split ratios per the applicable provision, it is hereby determined as follows: the applicable “Purse Split” shall be 63% in favor of Mr. Stevenson and the remaining 37% in favor of Mr. Herring.”

The two sides can still negotiate terms up to the moments leading into a scheduled purse bid hearing and can call for the session to be canceled in the event a deal is reached during that time.

Joe Joyce: I Think Usyk is Going To Vacate - He Doesn't Want That Smoke!

Olympic silver medal winner Joe Joyce believes Oleksandr Usyk will vacate the WBO heavyweight title in 2023.

Last month, Joyce scored a knockout win over former champion Joseph Parker to capture the WBO's interim-title.

Usyk is taking the rest of the year off, after tough back to back wins over Anthony Joshua.

The WBO mandatory will be due next year - but Usyk, who also holds the WBA, IBF and IBO titles, has his eyes set on opponents like WBC champion Tyson Fury and former beltholder Deontay Wilder.

Usyk's main goal is to land the undisputed fight with Fury.

If the Fury fight does not come off, Joyce does not expect Usyk to face him.

"Ideally, I would like to fight Usyk," Joyce told Metro.co.uk. "But it seems he is now looking elsewhere, considering moving back to cruiserweight or wanting to fight Fury but it doesn’t look like that is on the table at the moment. Usyk could vacate and then I would be elevated.

"I think he’s probably going to vacate. He doesn’t want that smoke. He has also been at it a long time. Hundreds of amateur bouts over the years and he will have earned very decent money for his last two bouts [against Anthony Joshua]. I don’t know, does he really want to take on The Juggernaut? If the Fury fight doesn’t happen for him, I’m not sure he wants to stay here and take loads of licks and have a hard fight when he doesn’t have to.

"But I don’t know what happens in boxing anymore. Fury changes his mind all the time, Usyk has a lot of options. But we will get there eventually. All I can do is keep calling people out and be patient."
