Triller To Present 'TrillerVerz' Monthly Boxing Series From MSG Beginning August 3

Boxing is back in New York and with a Tuesday night fight series.

Triller is set to present monthly shows from Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City beginning Tuesday, August 3. Triller co-owner Ryan Kavanaugh informed BS.com on Thursday of the forthcoming ‘TrillerVerz’ series—a collaboration of boxing events and Verzuz battles immediately to follow—confirming news that was first reported by ESPN.

“We’re really a big network. It’s about continuing to build our customers as well as to continue to deliver what they want,” Kavanaugh told BS.com. “Pay-per-view is one way to make money but that is for big, big events.

“In the meantime, we need to build up our fighters and image. The idea is to have a series leading up to our big PPV events.”

The monthly series will air live on the Triller app as well as Fite TV, which Triller purchased this past April. The transaction came a little more than a month after Triller parent company Triller.net also acquired Verzuz, the livestreaming music battle franchise founded by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz who will oversee that portion of each TillerVerz event.

Top 10 heavyweight contender Michael Hunter II (19-1-1, 13KOs) will face Mike Wilson (21-1, 10KOs) in the main event of the inaugural show, which will mark the first in New York City since the pandemic. The repurposed bout was due to serve as the chief support of a planned June 19 PPV event that was canceled when lineal lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez Jr. (16-0, 12KOs) was forced to withdraw from his scheduled IBF mandatory title defense versus George Kambosos Jr. (19-0, 10KOs) after testing positive for coronavirus.

The developing series was in discussion from day one of the formation of Triller Fight Club, with Triller chief boxing officer Peter Kahn playing a significant role in bringing the series to light. Its launch now provides Hunter— a second-generation heavyweight and 2012 U.S. Olympian—with his own headlining act and without having to spend any more time than necessary on the sideline.

“Blessed to have [Triller] fully backing me,” stated Hunter, who is 7-0-1 (5KOs) since moving up to heavyweight following a loss to Oleksandr Usyk in their April 2017 WBO cruiserweight title fight.

The show will also feature Chris Algieri in the evening’s co-feature. Algieri (24-3, 9KOs)—a former WBO junior welterweight titlist based out of the Huntington section of Long Island—will end a two-plus year ring absence with his placement on the show versus an opponent to be named.

The monthly series will be promoted by Lou DiBella. The Brooklyn-bred Hall of Fame promoter has served an integral role in the New York boxing scene throughout the 21st century, helping build Brooklyn’s Barclays Center into a boxing hotspot along with enjoying a decades-long relationship with MSG both as a promoter and television executive at HBO.

DiBella has been forced to find a home for his deep stable of fighters in the absence of an output deal of his own

“Boxing back in New York City, the first show back since the pandemic,” DiBella noted to BS.com. “I think it’s cool that DiBella Entertainment will be involved. You have Michael Hunter, one of the best heavyweights in the world. Chris Algieri is on the show, a true New York guy, and there will be plenty of Broadway Boxing fighters appearing on these cards, bringing a lot of local flavor.”

Each card will contain two events—a full boxing card, immediately followed by Verzuz battles featuring some of the most prominent names in hip hop and R&B.

Hip hop superstars N.O.R.E. and Beanie Sigel will square off in the first battle of the series.

“As someone who is a hip-hop aficionado, I love the Verzuz stuff,” notes DiBella. “I watched every one of the battles through the pandemic. The melding of those battles with boxing, it’s really cool stuff.”

Of course, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

The intertwining of boxing and music isn’t always well-received, as noted in each of Triller Fight Club’s previous two PPV ventures. The November 2020 show topped by the exhibition between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. featured musical acts in between each of the four fights, a similar formula applied to the April 17 PPV show from Atlanta headlined by Jake Paul (3-0, 3KOs) in a first-round knockout of former mixed martial artist Ben Askren.

The new formula of one show following the other should go a long way toward alleviating those concerns, while still offering synergy between the two worlds.

“It’s… two events so to speak,” notes Kavanaugh. “Boxing first and then Verzuz. That is how we will try to cross over. But, if you are the boxing purist who doesn’t want to see the Verzuz, you can do that. If you just want to see the Verzuz and not the boxing beforehand, that is available too.

“What we are looking to achieve is to cross over these two audiences—the purists and the young audience, and hopefully get the two to start working together.”

Chris Algieri braced for return against Mikkel LesPierre, targets big fights at 140 pounds

Former WBO junior welterweight titleholder Chris Algieri will end a 26-month hiatus when he returns against former world title challenger Mikkel LesPierre in a scheduled 10-round contest at the Madison Square Garden Theater on Tuesday.

Algieri (24-3, 9 knockouts) is eager to get back in the ring against his fellow New Yorker for the 143-pound catchweight bout.

“I think it’s a great matchup,” Algieri told The Ring. “This isn’t a comeback for me, it’s only a comeback because I’ve been out of the ring, my mindset has not changed. I’m a fighter, a current top guy, and I’m looking to be a world champion again.”

The 37-year-old from Huntington, New York, could have sought an easier return following an extended absence but he wanted to test himself.

“I didn’t want an easy comeback,” said Algieri, who has shared a ring with Ruslan Provodnikov (SD 12), Manny Pacquiao (L UD 12), Amir Khan (L UD 12) and Errol Spence Jr. (L TKO 5). “I wasn’t looking for a steppingstone to just get back in there. I don’t feel like it has been [over two years since I last fought] because I stayed in the gym, and with the pandemic, everyone has been off a year. I feel like that was a takeaway year, none of us could train, especially the New York guys, the gyms were closed for far longer than they needed to be.

“I’ve stayed in the gym and had a lot more sparring. My last comeback, I wasn’t sparring or training the way I was this time. For me, I don’t feel like I’ve been out of the ring that long.”

Algieri knows LesPierre very well and believes this opponent will provide him with the requisite test.

“I’ve commentated on several of his recent fights,” said Algieri. “He’s very talented. He was a really good amateur, he’s a good pro, he’s fought for a world title against [former WBO 140-pound titlist] Maurice Hooker. He recently fought another former [two-weight] world champion Jose Pedraza.

“His nickname is ‘Slikk Mikk’ and there’s a reason for that: He’s a slick southpaw, he has long arms, he has a good sharp jab, he’s a good counterpuncher, he’s very tough, which is something he didn’t have to show early in his career but has shown in his past couple of fights, especially with Hooker. He’s in there to do rounds and he’s tough and looking for ways to win. He’s got some good pop, he’s got slick upper body movement, but he doesn’t move his feet a whole lot.

“I have the size advantage, I have long arms too, I consider myself more of a volume puncher than he is, and I think I have underestimated power at 140. I think my power is going to show more in this fight than people may expect.”

Algieri, who has been training between New York and Florida, knows that an impressive win could catapult him into big fights at 140 pounds.

“I’m here to make a statement and to look down the road to bigger and better things,” he said.

“[LesPierre’s] only losses are to top guys, Hooker and Pedraza. I would like to win and do it impressively and do it better than those guys did. make a statement that this is the weight class I’m going to campaign in and I deserve these bigger fights.”

Algieri, however, stopped short of calling out anyone in particular.

“The landscape changes so quickly that getting your mindset ready for one fight or eyeing someone doesn’t usually work out that way,” he said. “I’ve never picked my opponents. I’ve never been the kind of guy who says I want to fight this guy and that fight happens. It’s not who I am. I’m a prizefighter… you tell me who, I ask how much and then we fight. That’s the mindset I have at this stage. When you keep winning, good things happen and that’s been the story of my whole career.”

LesPierre turned professional in 2012. The Brooklyn resident’s record stands at 22-2-1 (10 KOs).

Michael Hunter: I Was Never Really Embraced By Matchroom

Michael Hunter never felt like he was part of the family during his tenure under Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing promotional banner.

The American heavyweight from Las Vegas has since signed with boxing upstart Triller. Hunter will headline Triller’s new monthly boxing series – TrillerVerz Boxing – at the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Aug. 3 in a 10-round bout against Mike Wilson. Hunter believes he will be getting the sort of institutional support he lacked while working with Hearn.

Hunter’s deal with Hearn's Matchroom ran for three fights, all in 2019, during which he scored wins over Fabio Maldonado and Sergey Kuzmin, while drawing with Alexander Povetkin, after which Matchroom elected not to re-sign him.

“I peaked at Matchroom Boxing,” Hunter said in an interview on The SI Boxing Podcast.”I kind of knew that. Them letting me go was a tell tale sign that I had outgrown them.

“I just felt like I wasn’t really obviously a fighter like Dillian Whyte or a guy that was really embraced by Matchroom. I was really a guy that just went to work. They called me and I didn’t really have a say so in who or what or when to fight. You know, I fought harder fights than [Matchroom signee] Filip Hrgovic and I was on the undercard. I fought below them, when I easily could have fought him at that point. That’s what I kind of mean that I kind of outgrown it, I had worn out my stock and it came to a point where they were going to have to fully embrace me and give me some type of opportunity.”

Hunter (19-1-1, 13 KOs) pointed out that Matchroom would not have been able to go ahead with their two matches between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin, if Hunter had not drawn with Povetkin, in December 2019, on the undercard of Andy Ruiz-Anthony Joshua heavyweight title rematch.

“You know my rankings had gone up there, and they barely got on with the Dillian Whyte and Povetkin fight [because of my draw with Povetkin],” said Hunter. “I basically allowed that fight to happen. Dillian Whyte wouldn’t have had [any] fights if I didn’t [draw with Povetkin]. Yeah, I had outgrown [Matchroom]. It was time to move on.”

Hunter is keen on his new deal with Triller, the music app that has made recent inroads in the sport by promoting the lucrative exhibition match between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., as well as launching the fight career of YouTube star Jake Paul. For a while, however, it was slim pickings.

“I didn’t really have too many options,” Hunter said of the period after he was cut from Matchroom. “Top Rank, their forté isn’t really heavyweight fighters, especially African-American heavyweight fighters. PBC [Premier Boxing Champions] I had already been with. I didn't have too much of an option. My thing was always to continue to fight as many fights as I can on a solo basis and try to find a way to get these big fights.”

PBC [Premier Boxing Champions] I had already been with. I didn't have too much of an option. My thing was always to continue to fight as many fights as I can on a solo basis and try to find a way to get these big fights.”
Some corrections to Michael Hunter’s claims:

• Like Canelo, Dillian Whyte is a promotional and network free agent. He’s self-managed and only works with Matchroom on a per fight basis. He's not a Matchroom fighter.
• Alexander Povetkin isn’t a Matchroom fighter.
• Michael Hunter’s promotional deal with Matchroom USA expired around the same date DAZN were in financial dire straits. They were in the midst of performing a cost-cutting exercise during the height of the pandemic, by cutting their workforce, renegotiating the terms of their existing deals with their big-name fighters, such as Canelo, as well as amending their contracts with their sporting partners (i.e. TV licensing rights etc.).
• At this point in time, Matchroom couldn’t stage any fights in the US or the UK, and Eddie Hearn admitted to struggling to keep his fighters busy.
• Filip Hrgovic is co-promoted by the Sauerlands. Unlike Michael Hunter, he wasn’t reliant on Matchroom during 2020 to compete.
• The terms of Hunter’s deal with Matchroom is likely to be very different from the contract Hrgovic signed with the Sauerland’s and Eddie Hearn, so there’s no point in comparing how both guys were promoted.
• When Michael Hunter became a free agent during July 2020, there weren’t any promoters banging at his front door offering him a deal to join their stable. There’s a reason why he didn’t have any options after he was let go by Matchroom.

Michael Hunter: Hearn, Sauerland Talked Triller Out Of Hrgovic Purse Bid

Michael Hunter’s one and only experience with purse bids revealed to him the hazards of being a free agent in boxing.

The heavyweight contender was criticized in the spring for turning down an IBF heavyweight eliminator against highly regarded Croatian Filip Hrgovic after the matchup went to a purse bid and was won by Hrgovic’s co-promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom, who, incidentally, was Hunter’s former promoter for a brief stretch. Hunter, however, had no promotional backing, thus, no leverage to negotiate a better deal for himself.

“Me being the lone star type of fighter, I was doing my own business when it came to the purse bid,” Hunter, 33, said on the SI Boxing Podcast. “It didn’t have to come to a purse bid. They were supposed to negotiate with me in good faith, which they had a hard time doing.

“Them being silent – meaning [co-promoters] Team Sauerland and Eddie Hearn – [they] didn’t really contact me until the end, when I wouldn’t have much time, much of a choice to pick. I was going to a purse bid, and me not having any backing or [being] under a promotional banner, they knew I wasn’t going to have any backing if it went to a purse bid. Or at least that’s what they thought.”

Hunter, a 2012 Olympian, says that was when Triller stepped into the fray. Triller, the music app that promoted the exhibition match between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. last year, made headlines earlier this February by winning the purse bid for the IBF lightweight title fight between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos, beating out the established likes of Matchroom and Top Rank.

“Then [Sauerland and Hearn] got wind of Triller being involved,” Hunter continued. “At the time Triller was undefeated when it came to purse bids. I think at first they didn’t realize that anybody [else] was involved but when they found out who it was that’s when we had different extensions. It was extended for another 15, 12 days.”

But Hunter says that Hearn and Sauerland were ultimately able to coax Triller from submitting a bid.

“Eddie Hearn and Team Sauerland were able to reach out to Triller and kind of talk them out of bidding,” Hunter continued. “Eddie was the only one that bid. They said like they knew they were going to be the only ones that bid. Originally they weren’t. Triller was going to kick their butts when it came to that.”

In the end, however, the purse bid boondoggle seemed to have worked out for Hunter (19-1-1, 13 KOs). Instead of taking on Hearn’s offer, Hunter signed a multi-fight deal with Triller. On Aug. 3 he will headline against Mike Wilson (21-1, 10 KOs) on Triller’s new boxing series at the Hulu Theater of Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“I know that’s not really common to call other people and find out what they’re bidding and to try to talk them out of bidding, which [Hearn and Sauerland] ended up doing and it was a success,” said Hunter. “It just moved and shifted some deals and money my way. Shout out to Eddie Hearn and Team Sauerland.”

Michael "the Bounty" Hunter just scored a BRUTAL 4'th round knockout over Mike Wilson.

A powerful, highlight reel right hand laid Wilson out on the canvas. Wilson was able rise at the 9 count, however the referee quickly waived off the contest.
