Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Dimitry Bivol | DAZN PPV - May 7, 2022
Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - September 18, 2021?
Shouldn't it be 171 and 1/2 lbs if it's for the newly created Super Super Middleweight (Junior Junior Light Heavyweight) title?
Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - September 18, 2021?
The thing is, it's total bullshit asking a 175 belt holder to come down in weight in a world championship fight. No spin works here. Call it what it is....total bullshit from a diva that has to have an unfair advantage.
It shows Canelo isn't confidant in his ability to win fair and square, even with paid off judges.
I'd predict he'll take the easier fight with Plant later this fall.

Governing bodys decide the weights to have titles at, they should enforce there rules. If i was a governing body i would absolutely ban any outside weight clauses/contracts in world title fights.

What if Bivol agrees to fight at 168?gregregegg wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021, 18:56 Governing bodys decide the weights to have titles at, they should enforce there rules. If i was a governing body i would absolutely ban any outside weight clauses/contracts in world title fights.

Then I suppose that fight is not that likely.

Thats fine, fight for canelos belts rather than bivols. I think if you are fighting for a 175 belt, the person should be able to weigh in at 175, and i think the sanctioning bodys should inforce that.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 00:01What if Bivol agrees to fight at 168?gregregegg wrote: ↑07 Aug 2021, 18:56 Governing bodys decide the weights to have titles at, they should enforce there rules. Mike Coppinger and Eddie Hearn have confirmed that Canelo won't be fighting on the 18th September.
The next time he'll compete will be the end of October/early November.
Disappointing news.

I agree. Catch weights have always pissed me off when it comes to belts. We have too many weight classes and belts as it is.gregregegg wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 01:43Thats fine, fight for canelos belts rather than bivols. Catchweight bouts have been around for more than a century. They're not a new concept.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 10:35I agree. Catch weights have always pissed me off when it comes to belts. Of course, no one has, but catchweight bouts existed during the "single" belt era... more than a century.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 19:24Who claimed that they are “a new concept?”Enlightened-One wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 18:32Catchweight bouts have been around for more than a century. The only problem I have about catchweights, is when a fighter is willing to weaken themselves for the sake of a payday.
In Dmitry Bivol's case, he's been clamouring for a marquee bout at 168lbs for the last few years. And anyone with fully-functioning eyeballs can clearly see he's a small 175lb-er.
So any catchweight bout between Canelo and Bivol, wouldn't bother me at all. In fact, I'm not against any catchweight bouts where the B-side fighter is physically unaffected by the compromise.
How many fighters can you name that have bitterly complained about the concept of catchweights and have flatly-refused to engage in them?
I can't think of any.
Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - September 18, 2021?
Catchweights are contractual. If the team signs for a catchweight fight they are unlikely to complain about it. That does not change the fact that the fight is not being fought according to the weight class limits.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 19:41Of course, no one has, but catchweight bouts existed during the "single" belt era... more than a century.ironbeard wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 19:24Who claimed that they are “a new concept?”Enlightened-One wrote: ↑09 Aug 2021, 18:32

I have no problem with catchweight fights unless they are for championships. The 175 lb belt should not be on the line at a less than 175 limit. If it is purely a $$$ prizefight, fine.
Theoretically, they could fight for Bivol’s belt and all of Canelo’s 168 pound belts at 168, according to what you are saying. I disagree with that. The 175 belt should not be on the line at a weight limit less than 175, IMO. Canelo’s belts will not be on the line if the weight limit for the fight is over 168.
Rehydration limits also should not be allowed for championship fights.
The physical parameters should be as uniform as possible when contesting titles.
There are plenty of fights where a catchweight and/or rehydration limit affected strength and performance of fighters. Those fighters will not complain about it because those stipulations were included in the contract they signed.

Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - 2021?
Catch weight is fine for non title fights., but I don’t like it for belts. Gives the A-Side to much power.
Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - 2021?
Handicaps in boxing only helps turn the public off to the sport. Whether it be catchweights or rehydration clauses, it is pretty sad when you go from 8 to 17 weights, it is still allowed. I agree when a major belt is on the line, no handicaps should be allowed. The problem is, money talks. One example was Manny basically forcing Cotto to accept 145 for his belt, and had the backing of the governing body that threatened to strip Cotto if he didn't agree. Total BS.
Imagine if they started handicapping basketball, football, or baseball? It hurts the sport.

Another good example is FMJ sucking Canelo down below 154 for Canelo’s light middleweight title.

I can’t get outraged at the A-side if the B-side agrees to stipulations in the contract they sign, which results in them risking their physical wellbeing for the sake of a payday.
Boxers have to take responsibility for their own decisions. They’re not children. They haven’t been forced to sign a contract that contains wholly unacceptable terms.
My interest in titles has diminished over time, especially anything to do with the utterly rancid WBA.
In fact, the Boxing Insider website, which performed an interview with Eddie Hearn, claimed that the Canelo-Bivol fight wouldn’t have any titles on the line.
https://www.boxinginsider.com/headlines ... tchweight/
And to be honest, I couldn’t care less whether Bivol’s WBA title is or isn’t on the line against Canelo (if they ever do fight).
I generally only award kudos for fighters beating the top-dog in their respective division, rather than defeating those holding trinkets.
How many titles has Canelo won? 17 or something like that. I've lost count and stopped caring.

Boxers are responsible for their own decisions. That does not in any way make catchweights, rehydration clauses, etc., more palatable relative to title fights.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑10 Aug 2021, 10:29I can’t get outraged at the A-side if the B-side agrees to stipulations in the contract they sign, which results in them risking their physical wellbeing for the sake of a payday.

Are their too many belts, and sanctioning bodies? Of course.

Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvaerz vs. Dimitry Bivol - September 18, 2021?
According to the Fight News website, which published the WBA's current rankings and titleholders...
They have 52 meaningless trinkets currently being held by fighters. And Dmitry Bivol is holding one of them.
Dimitry Bivol, Jean Pascal and Robin Krasniqi all recently held different versions of the "same" WBA world 175lbs title, with Joshua Buatsi holding the international strap.
So part of the reason why I'm not outraged by catchweight bouts being sanctioned as title fights, is because the sheer volume of belts has devalued them to the point that most die-hard fans have stopped caring about them.
In fact, the WBN website no longer recognises the WBA as a legitimate governing body or title.

I really dont want to see the Canelo Vs GGG trillogy. Way i see it a past prime GGG has won 14 of 24 rounds so far, and that is very respectable. Amazingly people quickly forget crook judging and somehow GGGs legacy got damaged by going 14/24 while in his late 30s against the p4p 1 guy in true prime.. Go figure.
What i really dont want to see is canelo beat the shit out of GGG and get a late stopage. I think thats quite likely honestly. GGG has a mega chin, But if his reflexes are gone then that deadly jab will jsut get slip countered again and again and again, the body attack will be brutal and i just dont know if GGG will be able to dint him.. Simple styles last longest, but they dont last forever vs canelo levle tallent.
This is Manny vs Ugas... Except Canelo is no Ugas....
