Press Release

WBA Welterweight World Champion Yordenis Ugas will square off against Argentina’s Fabian “TNT” Maidana in the co-main event, while former world champions and all-action brawlers Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and “Vicious” Víctor Ortiz will meet in a 10-round welterweight duel. Kicking off the pay-per-view at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, unbeaten featherweight contender Mark Magsayo battles former world champion Julio Ceja in a 10-round attraction.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, MP Promotions and Man Down Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased through t-mobilearena.com and axs.com.

The 35-year-old Ugás (26-4, 12 KOs) has established himself as an elite welterweight since returning from a layoff in 2016, and was elevated to world champion in January after winning a WBA belt by defeating Abel Ramos last September. Ugás, who is from Santiago, Cuba and now lives in Miami, Florida, was on an eight-fight winning streak before losing a narrow split-decision to Shawn Porter in a world title fight in March 2019. The Olympic bronze medalist trains in Las Vegas and owns victories over then undefeated fighters Jamal James, Omar Figueroa Jr. and Bryant Perrella, plus veteran contenders Thomas Dulorme and Ray Robinson.

Born in Santa Fe, Argentina, Maidana (18-1, 13 KOs) will look to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, former two division champion Marcos Maidana, and become the latest Argentine world champion on August 21. The 29-year-old was unbeaten in his first 16 pro fights, capping off that run with a knockout of Andrey Klimov in July 2018. Since dropping a January 2019 decision to Jaider Parra, Maidana has bounced back with a knockout of Ramses Agaton in September 2019 and a 10-round decision victory over Carlos Cordoba in April of this year.

Guerrero (36-6-1, 20 KOs) is a three-time world champion who has won world titles at featherweight and super featherweight, and has fought a stacked lineup of elite fighters, including Floyd Mayweather, during a superb career. The Gilroy, California native returned from a 2017 defeat to Omar Figueroa Jr. to win his last three contests. After stopping Adam Mates in December 2018 and Hevinson Herrera in March 2019, Guerrero most recently won a unanimous decision over Gerald Thomas in September 2019.

Ortiz (32-6-3, 25 KOs), a former 147-pound champion, will return to the ring for the first time since a February 2018 draw against two-division champion Devon Alexander. The 34-year-old native of Garden City, Kansas, who now lives in Ventura, California, has faced some of the top names in the 147-pound division during his career. Ortiz won the welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in April 2011, before losing the title to Floyd Mayweather.

The Filipino sensation Magsayo (22-0, 15 KOs) fights out of Pasig City, Metro Manila and most recently knocked out Pablo Cruz in four rounds in April 2021, following his U.S. televised debut in October 2020 that saw him defeat Rigoberto Hermosillo on FS1. The 26-year-old fights in the U.S. for the fifth time overall on August 21 and against his toughest competition to date in the former champion Ceja. Magsayo owns 12-round decision victories over Shoto Hayashi and Jose Robles Olvera, and a sixth-round stoppage of former title challenger Chris Avalos.

A former super bantamweight champion, Ceja (32-4-1, 28 KOs) will move up to featherweight as he seeks an opportunity to capture a championship in a second division. Ceja's 2019 saw him engage in two action-packed battles, dropping a June contest to former champion Guillermo Rigondeaux and most recently fighting unbeaten super bantamweight champion Brandon Figueroa to a draw in November. The 28-year-old captured his 122-pound title with a stoppage of Hugo Ruiz in 2015, and has also challenged for a bantamweight title throughout his career.

Guerrero would beat Ortiz. I'd hope I'm wrong on that, but I'm not. Fighting right now it's possible Ortiz has more in the tank than Guerrero, but I doubt it. Both at their best though Guerrero wins.

Since both are probably at their worst, doubt if anyone cares.

Might still be a good undercard scrap though.

3.5 years since Ortiz has fought, to a draw with Devon Alexander? He should be fresher. :maybe:

I thought I heard Guerrero retired, and if he did it would have been the right time. Took a lot of hellacious shots because he was a tough fighter. Smart of him to take this fight because I doubt Ortiz has enough pop left to hurt him badly. Might have been an entertaining fight 8 years ago but they're washed up. It's like an old-timers day between two guys who aren't really old.

Victor Ortiz: I'm Ready To Make History Again!

Former world champions Robert Guerrero (36-6-1, 20 KOs) and Victor Ortiz (32-6-3, 25 KOs) have promised to go to war on August 21, when they collide at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Guerrero vs. Ortiz will be part of a Fox Sports pay-per-view card. The main event will feature a WBA welterweight title clash, as Manny Pacquiao will attempt to reclaim his belt from champion Yordenis Ugas.

Guerrero captured world titles at featherweight and super featherweight, and fought top opponents at welterweight like Floyd Mayweather, Andre Berto and Keith Thurman.

He briefly retired in 2017 after a one-sided knockout loss to Omar Figueroa. He came back to the sport in December 2018. He's now won three fights in a row.

“It was an honor to kick off the first PBC fight on network television and here I am once again, ready to put on a spectacular show for the fans. Victor Ortiz and I were always on a collision course to fight, and now it’s finally happening," Guerrero said.

"One thing I know for sure, we are going to throw blows and the fans are going to see an all-out war. My time out of the ring has only fueled my desire to give the fans a great fight. Everyone should order this pay-per-view and get their popcorn ready, because it’s going to be fireworks from top to bottom.”

The 34-year-old Ortiz (32-6-3, 25 KOs), a former 147-pound champion, will return to the ring for the first time since a February 2018 draw against two-division champion Devon Alexander.

Ortiz won the welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Berto in April 2011, before losing the title to Mayweather.

“Robert Guerrero is a legend who I’ve always admired. I look forward to competing against him and giving fans the toe-to-toe battle they’re expecting. I’ve had a great camp and I’m so excited to be part of this enormous event. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, I’m ready to make history again," Ortiz said.

Guerrero: Once I Got To 147, I Wanted To Fight Victor Ortiz; Finally Here Now

The upcoming showdown with Victor Ortiz comes right on time for Robert Guerrero, even if the bout was nearly a decade in the making.

A clash of former titlists graces the undercard of a Fox Sports Pay-Per-View this weekend, as Guerrero and Ortiz collide in a scheduled ten-round welterweight contest this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It’s the first fight in nearly two years for Guerrero (36-6-1, 20KOs), though one of a small handful that he has envisioned over the course of the past ten or so years.

“Once I got to 147 pounds, that’s when I wanted to fight Victor Ortiz,” Guerrero told BS.com. “Me and Victor Ortiz, we’ve been friends for a very long time. We still are friends but business is business. It’s a sport and we have to take care of business.

“We were both at welterweight and I thought on a crash course but it never happened. It’s finally here now.”

The bout is the first for the 38-year-old Guerrero—from Gilroy, California who trains out of Las Vegas—since a ten-round decision over Gerald Thomas in September 2019, extending his current three-fight win streak since returning to the ring in December 2018. Ortiz (32-6-3, 25KOs)—a former welterweight titlist—has not fought since a February 2018 draw with Devon Alexander, having spent more than two years in court battling felony charges which were ultimately dismissed last December.

Efforts to since get the two in the ring were stalled due to the ongoing pandemic, with event handlers searching for the right setting to stage the bout between southpaws in the twilight of their respective careers.

“There has been talks about me and Victor Ortiz throughout Covid,” notes Guerrero, a former featherweight and junior lightweight titlist who also held interim belts at 140- and 147-pounds. “Finally, we were able to make the fight, and on a big card like this. It’s a big chance for Victor and I to showcase on the undercard. It’s a fight we’ve been eyeing for quite some time and now it’s finally here.”

Guerrero insists to be in a better place than the version who suffered five losses in seven fights, including a stunning second-round knockout to then-unbeaten Omar Figueroa Jr. in July 2017 before shortly announcing his retirement. Nearly seventeen months later began the comeback tour, which he plans to extend beyond this weekend.

“The winner of this fight goes on to bigger and better things. It’s almost like a world championship fight,” insists Guerrero. “Whatever happens August 21st is going to determine the outcome of our careers.”

Guerrero-Ortiz serves in supporting capacity to the scheduled twelve-round welterweight title fight between reigning WBA titlist Yordenis Ugas (26-4, 12KOs) and former eight-division champ Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs).

Strange scores, a UD. I felt like Ortiz was better. He was effectivelly aggressive. Guerrero had some success early and stole a couple of the final rounds, but majorly he wasn't showing much.
