Was Azumah Nelson better than his rival claimant Brian Mitchell when they held WBC & WBA titles at super featherweight respectively in the late 80s.

A unification bout would have been good...

Yes, it would have been. Mitchell always had that stigma of being South African when it was something of a pariah nation. I only saw him once, against Jimmy Mac. A good fight that was.

Nelson would probably have beaten Mitchell. More through his own brilliance than any shortcomings on Mitchell‘s side.

Mitchell might have had the activity and stamina to edge Nelson on points. It would have been a very tough, close fight. Mitchell is very underrated. Unfortunately politics prevented him from getting the type of fights his talents deserved.

I think Azumah would just edge it. Nelson had problems with guys he couldn't hurt i,e Martinez, LaPorte, Fenech I and Mitchell would be in that category.
