a tiny indian also bounced pricey off the canvas 3 times in the commonwealths. tbh surprised fight like that allowed to continue in the ams, but he eventually came back and won by stoppage in the 4th (when am fights had 4 rounds)

George Collins as well. He just never looked anything special…. Yet was so heavily hyped and was so often on TV. Big difference between battering young kids two years younger than you as a junior (allegedly) and facing men…. You would’ve thought after Gary Stretch smashed him in a round in his first senior amateur fight (I think) the hype would end. Tony Collins got almost as much hype, a similar fate awaited him….

I always say Bute with anything like this. It’s the most convinced I’ve ever been that the underdog would win & not only win but destroy him when he fought Froch.

I just didn’t see what others saw. I couldn’t believe it when people were putting him at 9 & 10 in P4P lists when his best win was that farcical victory over Andrade when he showed how vulnerable he was.

Don’t get me wrong he still had a good career but he was very well looked after before the Froch fight.

Agree with that. Fine career, but his IBF run was on a par with some of those WBO reign's.
Being left out of the Super Six actually enhanced his status, with him being lined up for the winner
in a "super-fight". A lot of the boxing fraternity had him as the 'real' 168 king.

Couldn't believe it when Froch's team got him over to Nottingham.......and Froch was up to 9/4 in places.

I remember Liverpool's Keith Wallace also lost his last amateur fight before turning pro with Warren. An American by the name of Tony Pruitt stopped Wallace with a body shot but Wallace went on to win the Commonwealth flyweight title as a pro and proved a good fighter. George was also a good fighter but he had a stamina problem and Gary Jacobs outlasted him for the Commonwealth welterweight title in 1989. He was never going to beat Kirkland Laing for the British title.

Stretch was managed by Mike Barrett at the time and made his way to the ring with a bunch of mates, all of them complete posers. There was no need for it at York Hall and there was no need for it because Stretch was fighting someone who didn't stand a chance. Stretch eventually left Barrett and linked up with F rank Warren. He won the British light-middleweight title from Gary Cooper after 12 hard rounds in 1988, with the same posers at ringside.
Then Warren matched him with an Argentine fighter by the name of Ernesto Sena. Southpaw Sena quickly decided to rough Stretch up and got away with it, so he roughed him up again. Referee Tony Walker did nothing. Sena then cut loose with every foul in the book: low blows, elbows, butting, hitting Stretch after the bell, and so on and so forth. Walker was in a world of his own as this went on for the full 10 rounds. You know, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a fight more.

Lol I bet the referee thought the same as you and allowed it on purpose. In those days flash bastards weren’t really tolerated. Never knew what to think about Stretch as a person or boxer. I bet he got no modelling jobs for a month….

Yeah, Stuart Evans chinned him. That was one back for rugby because Colin Jones had chinned Richard Moriarty some years earlier. I've never heard anything good said about Stretch but he was a dynamite light-middleweight, really special. As soon as he moved up to middleweight, he lost something and was out of the game by the age of 24. Pat Barrett was the same when he moved from light-welterweight to welterweight.
Just looking at the clip again when Stretch chins Collins in the NABC's, and Collins turns southpaw in a stupid attempt to taunt southpaw Stretch and gets nailed.

Weird thing about Collins Stretch fight is that George doesn't even look like George..... Collins was always rellay swarthy with a jet black Errol Flynn tache,, yet his hair is sandy blonde there. Still don't get why an experienced Warren, and the boxing community thought that Collins would be great. Beating up actual kids when you're a grown man (rumoured 2 years older) then getting completely (Gary) Stretched in about d is hardly the stuff of future legends......
