Only sparring partner Tyson did'nt knock down.....

Hmmm.....pretty sure I have read somewhere that Tyson and Lewis spent a couple of weeks sparring when they were young,with Lennox totally dealing with the young Tyson.

Pretty sure we would have heard if he had Lewis on the floor....

Dunno if Tyson ever dropped Greg Page, but there is a famous video of Page downing Tyson in the run up to one of his fights.#

Joe has got a lot of mileage out of his friendship with Tyson and fair play to him - a man has to eat.

Glen McCrory never went down in nearly 100 rounds of sparring with Tyson.

Did'nt Joe get stopped in one of his few pro bouts?

Was he knocked down in this defeat does anyone know?

I know he struggled badly in his last pro fight against Brummie cruiser Mark Williamson.

I think Big Joe was around 19 stone for that one!

He got knocked down against his first opponent, i can tell ya i saw it on tape Joe Egan could fight proper!!!
Not a boxer, proper amatuer jab but man could he stand there a trade for fun....
i am doing a tribute night for Joe and another ex street fighter about there books they bought out....all details here will be a cracking night

Top bloke is Joe Egan.

I have met him on numerous occasions and i have to say he is one of the nicest blokes I’ve ever met.

His advice from ringside is legendary: “Use the uppercut”…. That is all! If there is boxing on in Birmingham you can be sure 'Big' Joe will be there.

He wanted to flatten Michael Flatley at one time, I for one would have been grateful for that.

With regards the Lewis v Tyson sparring when they were kids i'm sure I heard Tyson beat Lewis up pretty bad in their first session but after that Lewis knew how to deal with him and had the upperhand in their other spars

He broke Lewis' nose apparently, and roughed him up pretty bad. Lewis' handlers at the time tried to call a halt to proceedings, but Lewis insisted on carrying on and in the end Tyson started crying because Lewis made him look stupid.

When you look at photographs of them together, Tyson looks like a big man, and Lewis is just a big gangly teenager.

I think both sides of Tyson-Lewis sparring are exaggerated. I have footage of Tyson sparring Carl Williams in 1983. Mike was not even 17 when the sparring took place. Tyson does totally over-power Williams, but he handles him.

Of course, Mike gets caught with shots, but when seeing the sparring, you knew Mike Tyson was going to be a special fighter. Even then, Tyson was very skilled as a fighter, much, much more than a great deal of fighters of the same age!

The head-movement, power, speed, ferocity etc is all there in the sparring with Williams. Obviosuly, it's not as good as they were years later, but you notice them. At that age, sparring with the likes of Willaims, Bruno, Lewis etc would have been beneficial for Tyson, IMO!

What is beyond doubt for my money, is that Tyson was blessed with the combination of speed and power, not seen since Floyd Patterson, but had a much much better chin.

In all of his losses, Tyson took a hell of a lot of punishment before he went down. Lewis landed so many bombs on him, and Tyson just kept on trudging forward. Tyson really took a shellacking in there, but he stayed in there, despite desperately wanting to quit in the corner. He had zero chance of winning that night, and he knew it by the end of the 1st round.

Being pounded on by Lewis like that must be a truly horrific experience even for a professional fighter.
