Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
Jerry Quarry destroying Jack Bodell at Wembley in 1972 was a bad ass moment. Bodell was coming off a huge win over Joe Bugner to lift British, Commonwealth and European heavyweight titles and was renowned for his difficult southpaw style, but Quarry had seen it all and needed just 64 seconds to blow away his man. A rather stupid reporter asked Quarry if he had found Bodell awkward. "He fell awkwardly," said Jerry.
Talking of Bugner, he gave a bad ass display against Richard Dunn at Wembley in 1976. Both Brits were coming off a defeat to Muhammad Ali for the world heavyweight title but Bugner had boxed to survive (which he did) while Dunn went out there and had a real go (losing in five rounds.) In the days of 15-rounders, you could get 100/1 on Bugner winning in the first round. He won in the first round.
Staying with the heavies (and the quick wins), Gerrie Coetzee was given no chance against former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks in Monte Carlo in 1979. Coetzee was unbeaten but had never fought outside of South Africa. The big Afrikaner dropped Spinks three times to win in the opening round.
California's Jesse Burnett gave a bad ass performance against John Conteh in a 10-rounder in London in 1979. Conteh was rebuilding after Mate Parlov had outpointed him in a world title encounter but nobody expected the 33-year-old Burnett to trouble the brilliant Scouse. Burnett dropped him twice on the way to a horrible hometown draw.
Sheffield's Herol Graham was bad ass against Jimmy Price to win the British middleweight title in 1985. Graham had moved up from light-middleweight and was punching hard at the new weight. Price had lost just once: on a shocking first-round stoppage to a supposedly finished Ayub Kalule. You just knew that southpaw Graham would try to emulate southpaw Kalule. He pulled it off.
Mike Weaver was defiantly bad ass in his rematch with Mike Dokes in May 1983. Weaver had lasted just 63 seconds in their first meeting but this time he took Dokes all the way and nobody could separate them at the end of 15 bruising rounds. It was the first draw in a world heavyweight title fight in 70 years.
Roberto Duran's ring entrance on the night he faced Marvin Hagler was bad ass. Hagler had destroyed everyone in defence of his world middleweight title but some of them were beaten before they even threw a punch. Duran was unafraid. He coolly acknowledged the crowd and took Hagler all the way.

Michael Dokes giving a clinic to John L. Gardner
Jeff Fenech belting former Muay Thai great Samart Payakarun so badly, the latter retired to become a Buddhist monk.
Both Rocky Lockridge and Barry Michael were badass in their fight - the beating Lockridge dished out and the beating
Michael took...
Azumah Nelson blitzing Pat Cowdell
Eubanks tries with Carl Thompson
Benitez KO'ing Maurice Hope and knocking out his front teeth.
Don Cockell staying up against Rocky Marciano
Danny Williams staying up against Vitali - he showed tremendous guts in there - not for the first nor the last time.

Tex Cobb marching forward taking an almighty kicking for 15 rounds against Holmes, starting the last round with the immortal words: "Let's party!"
Winky Wright shutting out the great Felix Trinidad with pretty much just the jab for 12 rounds. Not compelling viewing, but the confidence that must have taken!

Reminds me of when his shoulder was gone and he stayed in there and knocked his opponent out with one arm.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 04:46 Danny Williams staying up against Vitali - he showed tremendous guts in there - not for the first nor the last time.

Whenever this fight come up I always remember that question. I mean it must be one of the strangest boxing questions ever after such a one sided fight. Quarry was actually pretty funny at times, did a good Ali impression though some say he flogged that horse a little too much on live TV.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 04:37bennie wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 04:33 Jerry Quarry destroying Jack Bodell at Wembley in 1972 was a bad ass moment. I think it’s more specific moments than fights/efforts the OP was looking for
Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
Maidana's "hump" of Brooner for me. Broner had done it to him earlier in the fight, but several rounds later, with the roles reversed and Maidana being the boss, his payback was glorious.
Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
Bodell jumped on Quarry like a novice, face first. Quarry taught him a badass lesson.bennie wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 04:33 Jerry Quarry destroying Jack Bodell at Wembley in 1972 was a bad ass moment. There were a lot of similar moments in Barerra vs Naz. The obvious one is putting his face in the corner turnbuckle but it was quality the way he ignored Naz holding his hand out to touch gloves after they fouled each other and ended up rolling on the floor.
Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
Wilder smashing Fury to the canvas, Fury getting up, hurting Wilder, and Wilder went back in his shell.

Wilder started doing a stupid dance while Fury was on the floor as well and you see him looking over as he’s getting up and thinking ‘oh f uck.’

Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
i imagine he and his boys going mental to 'who let the dogs out' or something along those lines, the highlight being the various canine forms of behaviour and noises they would mimic on the dancefloor, you know, really going for it with the 'whoooo, whooo, whooo-whoooo'. actual dog noises, that kind of thing. all done in a sort of a-rythmnic, autistic type nodding dog cadence. like about 8 black David Brents.Coco wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 10:54Doing his throat cutting gesture too!Counter-puncher wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 10:25i bet he always looks awkward when he tries to 'dance'. Holmes gesturing to ref to step in against the boy Marvis.
holyfield not backing down after the Tyson ear biting....he was ready to rumble.
Danny Williams bravery in a whole heap of fights ...first that springs to mind is that euro farce where the ref was bent and the promoter was ringing the bell illegally..?pure farce.
George foreman off camera trying to control rioters during the holyfield bowe circus.
That terrible resto fight in the 80's and the moment the Irish (American) guys trainer grabs hold of his opps illegal (unpadded) gloves at the end of the fight.

Ebanie Bridges fighting with that bad eye and smiling afterwards
Re: Moments in boxing that you thought were bad ass.
I’ve said it a few times but I think that really hurt Wilder mentally, I don’t think he will ever recover from the fact some one could get back up and put it back on himCounter-puncher wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 09:45yeah and sticking his arms behind his back, that whole round was badass to the bone, hell yeah

And Wilder couldn't have hit him harder.Foggy wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 13:25I’ve said it a few times but I think that really hurt Wilder mentally, I don’t think he will ever recover from the fact some one could get back up and put it back on himCounter-puncher wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 09:45yeah and sticking his arms behind his back, that whole round was badass to the bone, hell yeah
The first knockdown was a bit of a cuff, but the second was 2 bombs that landed flush.

Jackson's body punching in that video is a sight to behold as well - you can hear the impact of those shots. Brutal!JamesPhilips wrote: ↑18 Aug 2021, 19:45Never seen that wow. Go to 14:00...... I hadn't remembered they boxed. Drayton was a tough man but was just asking for it..... standing there right in front of Julian (prob the least fitting first name for a deadly banger, except maybe Sebastian lolRuthless-RKO wrote: ↑18 Aug 2021, 19:35Yeh I just watched it on YouTube.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑18 Aug 2021, 18:35
Never seen that, is it on YouTube? Sounds seriously boss.
Also Larry Holmes jumping on Trevor Berbick.
Dominic Negus taking no sh1t from Audley and nurting him lol
Just typed in Jackson vs Drayton, and forwarded it to the KO..)
Also does anyone else get really nostalgic when they see the 80s style graphics and even picture definition? I know today's may be 'better' but for some reason I love the older style stuff. I think it's just the warmth of nostalgia from when I discovered boxing.....

A crying shame I missed the fight live, fox knows why, cos when I watched it for the first time I knew it had happened. You all must have been going batsh1t watching it live, imagine being ring side. I’d have been like Bruno banging on the canvas for Benn McLellan.Coco wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 13:44And Wilder couldn't have hit him harder.Foggy wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 13:25I’ve said it a few times but I think that really hurt Wilder mentally, I don’t think he will ever recover from the fact some one could get back up and put it back on himCounter-puncher wrote: ↑19 Aug 2021, 09:45
