Re: where does uk rank among best boxing countries of all time
US is an obvious leader all time, despite it's in a sorta crisis now. Mexico or UK gotta follow. I'd put UK to the 2nd place, because Mexico has always been around, but never was a leader. UK looks like a leader today.

Think its second to USA as a boxing country overall, shows, history, current set up. but as somewhere that produces good boxers, historicaly, USA, Russia, Cuba, Ukrain, Mex are all probably ahead.
Re: where does uk rank among best boxing countries of all time
Russia isn't ahead definitely. Ukraine too. Today they are on par, but not all time, I'd say. Although Ukraine is closer alone with Klitschkos, Lomachenko and Usyk. In amateurs USSR was better and Russia with some post-Soviet countries are better now.gregregegg wrote: ↑26 Aug 2021, 04:24 Think its second to USA as a boxing country overall, shows, history, current set up. but as somewhere that produces good boxers, historicaly, USA, Russia, Cuba, Ukrain, Mex are all probably ahead.

Well if by "of all time" you mean from around 1900 when boxing as we know it was coming together, second, easily, if only for the fact that for a great deal of that time the US and the UK were the only large countries really taking boxing seriously. Russia of course didn't even exist for a lot of that time and the USSR didn't allow people to turn pro. Mexico didn't really start producing champions in numbers until the 1960s and 70s.

When i say russia i include USSR mentally. which is weird because then i guess im stealing a fair bit of tallent from USSR regions that are not now Russia. the stans, ukrain ect. Under the russian flag then UK is most likely well ahead then.DrDuke wrote: ↑26 Aug 2021, 04:36Russia isn't ahead definitely. Ukraine too. Today they are on par, but not all time, I'd say. Before the USSR there was the Russian Empire. Formally, there was another shortly lived state between them, during the revolution, civil war and other stuff. Now there's Commonwealth of Independent States, where there are Russia, Belarus, Stans and etc as independent countries.gregregegg wrote: ↑26 Aug 2021, 04:57When i say russia i include USSR mentally. which is weird because then i guess im stealing a fair bit of tallent from USSR regions that are not now Russia. the stans, ukrain ect. In terms of boxing there was a Soviet school, which now remains a basis for the post-Soviet countries, although, of course, it undergoes different changes with time passing.

It’ll be third, behind Mexico. Which is still some way short of the US. It’s typically been like that since the 60s, despite the proliferation of titles.
then it’ll be japan, Korea, Puerto Rico. Then South American and other Asian counties.
I think by holders per million the likes of PR would be way ahead of everyone else.

The Olympic funding has transformed the amateurs.
The flip side for the pros is that many prob stay too long these days.

Agree entirely. Mexico is a very strong second.orbtastic wrote: ↑26 Aug 2021, 06:31 It’ll be third, behind Mexico. Which is still some way short of the US. It’s typically been like that since the 60s, despite the proliferation of titles.

2nd after the USA for me. We've got the second best strength in depth across the widest range of weight classes behind the yanks and probably always have had. Plus we've got the history. Mexico stronger in lower weight classes though

Re: where does uk rank among best boxing countries of all time
cuba has produced some amazing talent and for a country of only just over 10m. still a bit short on quantity i'd say to crack the top 3, but p4p they are right up there
Re: where does uk rank among best boxing countries of all time
see maggie i reckon if you add the uk and ireland together i think they better mexico, and go 2nd due to super middleweights and bigger fightersmargaret thatcher wrote: ↑29 Aug 2021, 19:41 cuba has produced some amazing talent and for a country of only just over 10m. still a bit short on quantity i'd say to crack the top 3, but p4p they are right up there

ya, but what if we then add cuba and mexico together, do they overtake uk + ireland
Re: where does uk rank among best boxing countries of all time
#1 has to be the mix of Russia and her spinoffs. Think over the last 30 odd years and add 'stan to the name of a country.
#2 USA born and new citizens
#3 UK but I hate bundling. England deserves a shout on her own, but maybe a few points lower.
