August 27 will see fan-favourite Dave Allen back in the ring for the first time since retiring over 18 months ago

Dennis Hobson and Fight Academy partner Steve Crump serve up a lively night of boxing at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena on Friday August 27, with all the action shown live by exciting new boxing broadcasters, Fightzone TV.

Topping the show is local fighter Anthony Tomlinson. Undefeated at 13-0 (7), the 29-year-old will take on experienced Mexican, Dante Jardon, 33-6 (24), for the International Boxing Organization (IBO) Inter-Continental Welterweight Title, with the winner in line for a shot at the full IBO world title.

The undefeated Sheffield welterweight shed the ring rust after over a year out of the ring, last May, with a fluent six-round shutout points win over Genadij Krajevskij. The 30-year-old looked pretty special against the Liverpool-based Lithuanian foe, who was on the backfoot for the entirety of the contest, and looked like he had more levels to go through, which he will need in this next test against an opponent with three times the experience as an advantage and a 60% KO ratio. 'Crazy' Jardon, 33-years-old, turned pro in 2006 and has won numerous WBC belts, including Youth World; Latino; Continental Americas; FECAMBOX; and International Silver titles.

Also on the card, another undefeated Sheffield fighter, super featherweight Kane Salvin gets the chance to defend his Central Area Title against Manchester’s Michael Gomez Jr, in what could well be fight-of-the-night. Salvin is 6-0, while Gomez Jr has lost just once in 14 outings, and the spoils for the victor will be a chance to contest the English crown which is currently vacant.

The bill will also see the return of popular Doncaster heavyweight Dave Allen, 18-5-2 (15), who is slated to take on tough Italian, Andrea Pesce, 7-13-3 (2), in a highly-anticipated return after over a year away from the ring. While, well-regarded Mark Jeffers from Chorley also gets a runout; the 23-year-old is currently 12-0 (4) and being talked about in boxing circles as a future world title candidate.

“This match is a step up for Anthony,” said promoter, Hobson. “It’s a real test and the winner could get a direct shot at the IBO world title. I believe Anthony will do the business though and make a real statement against this tough Mexican. Anthony wants to test himself against the best in the division, and that’s the path we’re on.

“This is the first big test since he’s come to Fight Academy, and I’m excited by it. The welterweight division is red hot and you have to take on the elite to get titles, and that’s what we’re planning to do with Anthony. This Mexican isn’t to be taken lightly though. We’ve seen British fighters, including our own like Tommy Frank and Billy Stuart, beaten by Mexican fighters in recent weeks and this is a proper test.

“Salvin against Gomez Jr, on paper, is very close and these Area Title fights are always cracking scraps. Potentially this could be the fight of the night and I’m pleased we’ve finally been able to get it made. The ‘White Rhino’ is also returning on this show! I’ve seen Dave take tough fights in the past when he wasn’t really in top condition, and I’ve been worried for him. But he’s been out of the ring for over 12 months now, has come with us and he’s in fantastic shape. I’m looking forward to seeing the second coming of Dave Allen, and hopefully he’s fresh enough to win a proper title.

“I also think, as does Kevin Maree and Rob Rimmer, that Mark Jeffers could go all the way. The way he holds himself in the ring, potentially he’s world class and I’m going to really enjoy the journey with him. I like him as a person and want to manoeuvre his career up to world level, he has so much potential.

“This is another great Fight Academy show in Sheffield, and another an exciting watch for Fightzone viewers.”

'The White Rhino' returns on a far understated platform than before

In an exclusive interview with Danny Flexen for SecondsOut, popular heavyweight Dave Allen (18-5-2, 15KOs) revealed exactly what led him to emerge from retirement less than a year after hanging up his gloves.

The 30-year-old from Conisbrough, who has fought against David Price, Tony Yoka, Luis Ortiz, Dillian Whyte, and headlined at The O2 against former world champion Lucas Browne, has attributed his comeback to helping the fighters he now manages - Levi Kinsiona (7-1, 1KO) and Stevi-Ann Levy (3-0).

He explained his reasons for returning from retirement and why he chose to turn down big money fights on DAZN for a far smaller platform on Fightzone TV:

What prompted you to return from retirement?

"I retired November time, I was really happily retired, so I started managing fighters, so this is my move after boxing so I can still be involved in boxing.

"Started managing Levi Kinsiona, I was managing about six at first, two of them were journeyman, the ones who were on the road, and I said look I'm managing fighters and don't take a percentage, I'm taking zero per cent off any of them, and if I'm gonna be doing it for free, I don't want to manage losers. It mind sound harsh, but if I'm doing it for free, I'm involved because I want to be part of your success.

"So, two of them I said to manage yourself, please don't let anyone take money from you, it ain't that hard. Another two of them I said, 'look I didn't really rate them, I'm not managing you because I don't think you're that good'.

"Levi Kinsiona, I think has got a lot of talent, he also works a full-time job and is doing a degree - how could you not want to help a man that's doing that? And Stevi is a good friend of mine, so I said I'll manage her as well."

"So I'm sat at home right, so I'm managing these two fighters, and it was Levi at the time and I was thinking how can I get him out? So I messaged Eddie [Hearn] and I said, 'Eddie, do me a favour, will you get Levi Kinsiona out?' and he said, 'Well, probably not mate', so I said, 'Alright, sound'.

"So at this point, I'm trying to think of ways like how can I get him out, we did get him on a Matchroom bill in the end but got pulled off four days before, because his opponent pulled out. I'm looking at allegedly and thinking 'yeah that's great but we got loyalty to Ed'. So nothing is being offered anywhere and I thought I used to work with Dennis, he was my first manager. So I spoke to them, it's an interesting platform, an interesting idea.

"So I went back to the gym, on the sly, I'm 21stone so I'm not enjoying it, but I went for two or three weeks. I said, 'Look, I want to come on board right, but the kids I manage they're on board with me. When I box, they box, and I'm going to bring a big audience with me'.

Levi Kinsiona is former national amateur champion who is now 7-1 as a pro, and Stevi-Ann Levy is currently undefeated at 3-0. Both fight on Friday, August 27, on the same card as Allen at Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield, broadcast live on Fightzone TV.

Is it true you turned down big money fights on DAZN?

"I could have gone back to DAZN and I would have got six figures for an Alen Babic fight, so it's not about the money, I don't need the money. I like the platform and like what he's doing and kids are getting on TV, of course it's not a massive platform, so I think it's a great idea and I'm proud to be involved in it. Levi and Stevi are also fighting on Friday so there you are, so I'm excited to be back fighting but I'm equally excited to get the fighters out and watch Stevi and Levi do the business as well.

"The time I had off were probably the best four or five months of my life. It was a really nice period of my life. I don't need to come back for any other reason than I want to give these [fighters] an opportunity and I've still got a bit left to give. This is an entertainment business and I can still entertain, I'm still putting bums on seats. As long as I'm entertaining people and they want to come and see me, I'll continue to do so while I'm heathy."

Allen had won five from his last six fights, but it was a punishing 10th-round retirement at the heavy hands of Liverpool hero David Price that prompted his decision to quit getting punched in the face anymore.

Now he returns in a routine six-round contest this Friday against Italian journeyman Andrea Pesce (7-13-3, 2KOs).

Would you ever go back and accept the six-figure fight with Babic if it was offered to you again?

"If I believed I could win it, then yes, but only then. If I had boxed Alen Babic on Friday, I wouldn't beat him. I probably wouldn't last three rounds. I wouldn't beat Fabio Wardley at the minute. I've been out for 20 months. I'm not at that level right now.

"I'm not interested in putting more miles on the clock than needed. If I box Alen Babic, if I box Fabio Wardley, if I box Nathan Gorman, if I box any of them, I will beat them; if I don't box them, it's because I know I can't."

Mexican fighters have a habit of upsetting British fighters. Anthony Joshua, Josh Warrington, James Tennyson and Tommy Frank are all fighters who have come unstuck against unheralded Mexican boxers in recent times … Anthony Tomlinson promises he won’t be next.

On August 27 in his home city at Sheffield’s Ponds Forge Arena, Tomlinson gets his toughest test when he takes on Dante Jardon for the International Boxing Organization (IBO) Inter-Continental Welterweight Title, live on Fightzone.

Jardon enters the contest as the far more experienced man, and with a dangerous record. The Mexico City native has lost just six times in 40 outings and has iced 24 opponents in his 15 year career to date.

Tomlinson though has never tasted defeat and is ultra confident. Very heavy-handed – only six of his foes have heard the final bell in 13 fights – the 29-year-old is promising fireworks and says that if Jardon tries to put it on him, he’ll be seeing stars!

“I’ve watched nothing of him,” said ‘The Truth’, “but I know he’ll have that Mexican style, will come forward and have a fight. I can’t wait and am looking forward to a good scrap; I know for a fact that when people come to fight me, they get knocked out!

“He’s not to be overlooked but I’m more than confident in my ability and what I can do. I’ve cut no corners, have dedicated myself to training, and I’ll be putting this Mexican on the back foot.

“Headlining in Sheffield on Fightzone is massive. I’m all about Sheffield; it’s a great opportunity and I want to thank Dennis, Fight Academy and Fightzone for giving me the platform to showcase my skills.”
