So it's still going to be two champions. The regular should go too.
They’ve ordered fights between the regular and super champs in a few divisions. Will take time to sort out the mess they’ve created but they’re making headway.

The truth is its long past time the main promoters who work with the WBA Haymon and Hearn abandon them for the WBC or IBF.

And the TV execs need to chip in too. If Haymon and Hearn fucked them off they'd be in serious trouble.

They aren't going to reform properly, they need to be exiled. The other 3 sanctioning bodies should team up and stop recognising them, it would be more money for the others anyway.

I don't buy it one bit, they've said all this before.

They have Sergio Martinez ranked 3 in their MW rankings ffs. And old Mark De Mori has been ranked again.

They are way beyond reform. It's the same suits there.

I agree they’ve said it before but I don’t remember as much action taking place as has happened over the last couple of weeks.

Their ratings are still a joke though. No way in hell Sergio should be rated and De Mori shouldn’t be anywhere near the top 100 let alone the top 15. Still all organisations have issues with their top 15s. The IbF have had loads of poor mandatories in recent years and similar with the WBO.

They did say at the start they were gonna keep Gold and get rid of Interim and Regular.

The ESPN article says the interim holders will receive mandatory shots at the super champions.

Hmm.. maybe that’s their way if not having to take legal action.

I mean the interim champions are ranked at #1..

Gilberto Mendoza: "… I hope that in October we will start [removing titles], I do not know how long it can take. I do not know in which divisions the interim belts will be removed and in which divisions the regular and the super champions will remain. We are going to strengthen the Gold belts that we have."

I think the WBA are essentially going to find a way to rename their titles.

In terms of prestige, the regular belt will be replaced by the gold title.

The WBA will inevitably introduce a new title to replace the recently eradicated interim strap.

The WBA still want their sanctioning fees, so they can be “seen” to be “doing something” about the excessive amount of titles they sanction, without actually “doing anything.”

For the utterly rancid Gilberto Mendoza, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet", if you get my drift?

They are interim to reg champs not to super champs I thought. Otherwise interim belts are better than reg belts,… DDD vs AJ would be fun…

I know they don’t rank the Gold champions, but I’ve considered a gold champion a world champion.

They’ve said that their gold champions will be part of the normal rankings now and won’t sit outside of them as they have previously.

It’ll be a bit like a intercontinental belt.

WBA names Gary Shaw chief of staff

Long-time promoter Gary Shaw was named chief of staff of the WBA Directorate and advisor to president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. The appointment was announced during an online press conference with WBA welterweight super champion Yordenis Ugas, where Shaw was present along with Mendoza to make the appointment official. Shaw came to prominence in boxing as an executive with Main Events and eventually had a long and sucessful run with a self-named promotional entity.

New WBA ratings released

The new WBA ratings have been released. There are now five divisions with just one champion recognized.

Dimitry Bivol (light heavyweight)
Jermell Carlo (super welterweightght)
Roger Gutierrez (super featherweight)
Naoya Inoue (bantamweight)
Artem Dalakian (flyweight)

Two more divisions will resolve shortly…

1.Murodjon Akhmadaliev will become the sole super bantamweight champion later this month, when the regular title is vacated.
2.Gervonta Davis holds the regular titles at lightweight and super lightweight. He will be giving up one belt after his next fight.

There are a whole slew of mandatory title fights and eliminators in the works to get to the goal of one champion per division.

See the new WBA rankings here.

For me, the sanctioning bodies have been creating these secondary titles for two reasons:

1) the obvious being to get more in way of sanctioning fees.

But the second is way more corrosive to the sport

2) by awarding a belt, they then know the other bodies will not rank their "champion". This ties a fighter to an org. The fighter then has a decision, do I drop the belt and go another route, or do I plow on in the hope of getting an eventual title shot.

There are the obvious promotional benefits to the fighter, but at some point they are just throwing good money after bad, and can't detach themselves from the parasitic relationship.

And the fans lose out as not only are we not getting the fights at the highest level, but it stops fights happening at the levels below that. People often lament that the top 10-15 aren't fighting each other. This is a big part of that which is only compounded by the 'other side of the street' approach some promotional outfits take.

For me both the WBA and WBC are the main culprits of the above.

Secondary titles don’t prevent their titleholders from competing for straps provided by rival governing bodies.

It’s all about the sanctioning fees.

And promoters are willing to pay them, because meaningless trinkets make their events more compelling to watch for mainstream casuals.

Agreed, but they won't be ranked so would be difficult to get mandated, hence tied in.
WBA + regular + interim
WBC + interim
IBF
WBO

For the IBF that's 6 of the top fighters they won't be ranking in their top 10. (Not sure what happened with the WBA Gold belt holders, but I think WBC silver champions were still ranked)

Though I could well be wrong, and making a big deal out of nothing.

WBC Silver is standard regional type belt.

They can still be ranked elsewhere.

WBA title reduction progress

The World Boxing Association’s World Title Reduction Plan has made significant progress toward having a single champion in each division. 12 of the 17 weight categories currently have a sole ruler and the others are moving forward to achieving the goal set by President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza and the Championships Committee.

At minimumweight, the WBA has made several attempts to achieve a single champion between Thamanoon Niyomtrong and Erick Rosa. A purse bid will be held on July 21 to make the fight before the end of the year.

At heavyweight, Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois will fight on August 26, whose winner will be the only WBA champion the division of the pioneer organization.

Other weight categories that remain to be resolved are as follows:

At welterweight, progress was paused due to the suspension of the fight between Vergil Ortiz and Eimantas Stanionis, however, it is expected that the Lithuanian can face the winner of Spence-Crawford in the near future to define the division.

At super middleweight, Canelo Alvarez is facing Jermell Charlo next, while confirmation is expected for David Morrell to make a voluntary defense of his belt.

Finally, the committee is working and waiting to make a decision at lightweight, which has Devin Haney as super champion and Gervonta Davis as champion.

Sad but true. The alphabets have nobody to blame but their own greed. The only way to save it is to go back to one organization and get back to like 12 weight classes at the most. Have the best boxers fight each other and a loss or several loses doesn't hurt your status because it's OK to lose to another good boxer as long as you come back strong in your next fight and were competitive in your loss. Of course this will never happen unless some billionaire came in and bought out all of the alphabets and had just one organization. Hmm sounds sort of what the UFC did. I just see it never happening in boxing. Even amateur boxing is very screwed up from the world body which was just expelled from the IOC and now a new one is starting up. In the US, USA Boxing is not doing a good job in many areas. Shame.

Who cares? Just ignore them. They have no standing whatsoever except in what people atttribute to them. All we have to do is start paying no attention to any WBA title. There's plenty of others around.
