Lonsdale belts
Lonsdale belts
Is a Lonsdale belt available for every weight class from minimum weight to heavyweight?
I don’t think I can recall a Minimumweight belt fought for or even a light fly.
Please enlighten.

Re: Lonsdale belts
There is no British title for light fly or straw, super fly is only recent, no belt for bridgerweight either

Re: Lonsdale belts
Lowest weight class is fly weight thats has been about for a long time. Most recently was fought for saturday night and has had some good fighters hold it including Jimmy wilde,Duke mckenzie,Dave mcauley,Jackie brown ,Charlie magri to name just a few of them.
Re: Lonsdale belts
Charlie Magri was awarded a Lonsdale Belt after his retirement in 1986. He had won the British title in 1977 with a seven-knockdown mauling of Eltham's Dave Smith but never defended it because he was obviously too good for the limited number of domestic flyweights around at the time.

Superfly been about for a few years now. Lee Haskins held the title for a while including what could be some of the worst fights ever witnessed vs Andy Bell and Don Broadhurst.
Re: Lonsdale belts
I reckon there would be if there were enough fighters

Thete would be more than enough for a Commonwealth title at light fly and strawweight ... it would be great for African boxing and give sone of their fighters a pay day and opportunities at a major title.
Re: Lonsdale belts
Paul Weir won world titles at straw and light fly and famously couldn’t get fights at the weight domestically.

Too many weight classes as it is especially at lower weights. Should be less if anything.

There is a Commonwealth title at light-flyweight. It was originally meant to be on the line in the bout between Matt Windle and Neil McCubbin.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑30 Aug 2021, 13:34Thete would be more than enough for a Commonwealth title at light fly and strawweight ... it would be great for African boxing and give sone of their fighters a pay day and opportunities at a major title.

Completely disagree - boxing is a global sport and there are enough fighters at 105/108lbs (or 7st 7lbs/7st 10lbs) to justify these weight divisions - in Africa, Latin America and Asia - boxing doesn't start and end with the UK and North America.peter barlow wrote: ↑30 Aug 2021, 16:17 Too many weight classes as it is especially at lower weights. Re: Lonsdale belts
Between weight class and multiple sanctioning bodies with multiple belts, it's now been watered down to the extent being a belt holder or "champion" has no meaning anymore.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 03:03Completely disagree - boxing is a global sport and there are enough fighters at 105/108lbs (or 7st 7lbs/7st 10lbs) to justify these weight divisions - in Africa, Latin America and Asia - boxing doesn't start and end with the UK and North America.peter barlow wrote: ↑30 Aug 2021, 16:17 Too many weight classes as it is especially at lower weights. If we want to give everyone a belt then it doesn't mean much.

Though I agree with your broader points - especially about 'multiple sanctioning bodies' and wish they would disappear, I completely am in favour of the light-fly/minimumweight divisions.peter barlow wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 07:47Between weight class and multiple sanctioning bodies with multiple belts, it's now been watered down to the extent being a belt holder or "champion" has no meaning anymore.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 03:03Completely disagree - boxing is a global sport and there are enough fighters at 105/108lbs (or 7st 7lbs/7st 10lbs) to justify these weight divisions - in Africa, Latin America and Asia - boxing doesn't start and end with the UK and North America.peter barlow wrote: ↑30 Aug 2021, 16:17 Too many weight classes as it is especially at lower weights. We have to remember that places like the Philippines don't have many boxers fighting at light heavyweight or above - boxing to them are the lower weight classes, same for a lot of proper boxing countries and a lot of these countries have tiny men who can make 7st 7lbs - you're not going to see many minimumweight fights in the UK but you will see plenty in Japan, South Africa and Mexico.
At the moment there are 169 active minimumweights in the world and 289 light flyweights - and though there are weight divisions which could be eliminated (super middleweight and bridgerweight...) I think minimumweight and light flyweight should stay for the reasons I have stated.
Re: Lonsdale belts
Do you think the Lonsdale belt should be restricted to so many divisions, like 7 or 8, this would then create more competition and Lonsdale belts been given away

Think Junior Witter was awarded a Lonsdale belt due to the lack of suitable challengers as well

I'm not fully sure. It just got changed to an eliminator the week of the show. Still a great fight.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 03:01What happened?Greg Houston wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 02:33There is a Commonwealth title at light-flyweight. Re: Lonsdale belts
It's the multiple sanctioning bodies with multiple belts at every weight that is the problem.peter barlow wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 07:47Between weight class and multiple sanctioning bodies with multiple belts, it's now been watered down to the extent being a belt holder or "champion" has no meaning anymore.Fray Bentos wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 03:03Completely disagree - boxing is a global sport and there are enough fighters at 105/108lbs (or 7st 7lbs/7st 10lbs) to justify these weight divisions - in Africa, Latin America and Asia - boxing doesn't start and end with the UK and North America.peter barlow wrote: ↑30 Aug 2021, 16:17 Too many weight classes as it is especially at lower weights. Nothing wrong with the number of weight classes.
And regarding Lonsdale belts. In my opinion, if there are two domestic guys who have proven to be at least British title level at ANY recognised weight class and are meeting for the British title then why wouldn't a Lonsdale belt be on the line?

I think Australia has a minimumweight title - they lay dormant until two qualified fighters can contest the title. I would love to see more British fighters at that weight (and light-fly) and the reason why a lot of them don't turn over is because of the lack of domestic title opportunities on the line.
Those weight divisions (and the heavyweights funnily enough...) are my favourite weight divisons - see some cracking domestic scraps at flyweight and below.
Re: Lonsdale belts
Fly
Bantam
Feather
Lightweight
Welter
Middle
Super middle
Light heavy
Heavyweight
Possibly scrap super middle - only put this in because it seems to be the most successful division for Brits
I just think less divisions you have the more British titles fights you would see as we have discussed above lack of competition
Re: Lonsdale belts
Or unfortunately it would give promoters more opportunity to duck fighting for these titles.Foggy wrote: ↑01 Sep 2021, 04:24Fly
