New study shows rugby players lose cognitive function after playing one season
I wonder how long before they look to change or ban boxing.....
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/58369271
After just one season of rugby players at a professional team saw a decline in both blood flow to the brain and cognitive function, a new study claims
The University of South Wales research followed a professional rugby team over the course of a season, testing players pre-season, mid-season and post season.
It will be published in Wednesday's September edition of the Journal of Experimental Physiology.
Researchers followed a team which plays in the United Rugby Championship.
They say more research is needed on the long-term effects.
Their study, seen exclusively by the BBC, has found that over just one season a team of professional rugby players saw a decline in blood flow to the brain and cognitive function - the ability to reason, remember, formulate ideas and perform mental gymnastics.
The paper also suggests that rather than only concussions, repetitive contacts, or sub concussions, sustained through rugby have caused the declines seen in the players.

boxing is obviously pretty f@cking sh!tty for the brain, not only the fights, but the hundreds of rounds of sparring
even if someone doesnt slur, etc....their thinking can still be slowed down and all sorts of other issues

Yes of course but I think the true damage of contact sports is really being looked into now. It's always been known but maybe ignored or not thought to be such a big problem.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 08:39 boxing is obviously pretty f@cking sh!tty for the brain, not only the fights, but the hundreds of rounds of sparring

There is a risk in every sport, regardless.. No one forces you to choose the profession.
Some are clever, will get in, get out. The talented ones. make their money.
The dumb ones don't know when to quit.
No one wants to get punched in the face right?
Bellew said it many times, years of being punched in the face, he finally got his millions payday 3 times!
Robbed the bank. Invested after the first fight, set for life, then Haye rematch and Usyk paydays were bonus.

It's like saying being a soldier is dangerous, which it is. you can die.
But they're not gonna ban people from joining the army are they?

Of course but as the risks are highlighted more and more I think it will change the sport. Either rules will be imposed that make it less dangerous and/or more fighters will just want to get in and out, earn as much money as possible for the least risk, which on one hand I don't blame them for, but on the other hand it makes the sport less interesting. Anyone can end up with issues as they get older with dementia etc but fighters will obviously be at more risk even if they seem ok after retirement. Former pro Tony Jeffries has a split down his brain and says he feels fine, that was only found out as he took part in a medical study, apparently 50% of the boxers they scanned in that study had the same split in the brainRuthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 09:24 There is a risk in every sport, regardless.. Hardly the same though is it. Children don't join the army and go to war but kids are allowed to be punched in the head. Unless these things are researched then people can't make choices about the potential risks.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 09:36 It's like saying being a soldier is dangerous, which it is. you can die.

In other news water is wet
When a man becomes of age he lives by his own decisions imo
No one forces you to do anything,it's on you
Although better research into such subjects is always a good thing,

Of course everyone knows boxing is dangerous, the article isn't about that though, it's how one season of playing rugby affects brain function. So its more about what effect that will have on boxing.

What's the age limit to join the army?Controversial wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 09:43Hardly the same though is it. Children don't join the army and go to war but kids are allowed to be punched in the head. As above stated, options are there. No forces you to play a sport. You can go to the gym and NOT spar.
It's a personal choice.
I don't think they'll start banning sports, but they will push to cut down on the things that are the worst.

that explains why Owen Farrel has become so shite at rugby .

Under 18 you need parental consent to join the army and you can't go to a warzone until you are 18. But thats irrelevant, no one is saying boxing isn't a personal choice. The point is new studies shows brain function is damaged from rugby over one season, thats quite a short amount of time. I'm not saying they will start banning sports but they will likely introduce measures to make it safer, as they do now for children under 12 heading a football. As boxing is primarily about punching someone in the head then I can't see how they can ignore it but make other sports safer.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 10:01What's the age limit to join the army?Controversial wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 09:43Hardly the same though is it. Well they could ban head shots in sparring. Shorten rounds. Add age limits. Only allow so many fights a year. Look at rehydration and weight making. Introduce more brain scans and cognition tests, Lots of things they could do.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 10:37I understand mate..Controversial wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 10:19Under 18 you need parental consent to join the army and you can't go to a warzone until you are 18. No one person is in control of boxing, like MMA has UFC and Bellator etc. Football has FIFA, UEFA.Controversial wrote: ↑31 Aug 2021, 10:52Well they could ban head shots in sparring. Shorten rounds. It would need to be the commissions for boxing, but then there are so many, they'd need to all kinda come together and look at this.
