Shannon Briggs vs Andrew Golota

Post by DrDuke »

12 rounds, prime vs prime.

Golota would stop Briggs in about 10 rounds. Golota was a much better boxer than Briggs and he was more durable physically, although he could have mental breakdowns. At his best Golota was winning against Bowe, who at that moment was considered to be #1 HW, and that's a big deal. Briggs at his best controversially decisioned a nearly 50 year old Foreman and drawn vs Botha, where many had him losing too. Briggs was a kill-or-be-killed slugger, who could hit hard, but was majorly bringing it early and failing, if wasn't able to KO an opponent. Briggs' best clear win is probably Liakhovich, when Briggs was losing, but managed to catch chinny Liakhovich late. Of course, Golota wasn't elusive, iron-chinned and even iron-willed, but he still was pretty tough, he could box and hit hard, so it would be more likely, that Andrew would control the action behind his jabs and follow-ups, neutralizing Briggs' power with the rational offence, breaking Briggs down gradually and stopping him later on.

Whom would you pick to win, how and why?

As long as Andrew Golota didn't have some sort of nervous breakdown like he did in the Riddick Bowe fights it ought to be a comfortable win for the Polish heavyweight.

If Golota mentally check out, then Briggs would pound him and stop him in the late rounds.

Golota either knocks out Briggs by the 8th round or so, or has a mental breakdown and bites him and low blows his way out or something. The panic would set in earlier if Briggs started rattling him.

Interesting matchup, I rate Golota has a fighter - but something tells me that Shannon The Cannon may lands his big shots... And that would help him to a points victory.
