Press Release

Unbeaten rising star Jesus “Mono” Ramos Jr. will duel super welterweight contender Brian Mendoza in a 10-round showdown that headlines FOX PBC Fight Night and on FOX Deportes Sunday, September 5 from The Armory in Minneapolis.

FOX PBC Fight Night begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features rising lightweight contender Starling “El Poli” Castillo battling former title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos in the 10-round co-main event, plus middleweight prospect Armando “El Toro” Reséndiz kicks off the broadcast against all-action Marcos “Madman” Hernández in a 10-round fight.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Warriors Boxing, are on sale now and can be purchased at The Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster.

“Jesús Ramos is primed to breakthrough into the next level of boxing’s rising stars and will look to make big steps towards his goal in a tough test against Brian Mendoza,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “The fantastic fight fans at The Armory in Minneapolis will be in for a night loaded with young rising stars from start to finish, as lightweight Starling Castillo and middleweight Armando Reséndiz step in for difficult matchups against Juan Carlos Burgos and Marcos Hernández respectively. Sunday, September 5 is going to be a can’t miss lineup of action live in primetime on FOX.”

Ramos (16-0, 14 KOs), the nephew of welterweight contender Abel Ramos, has paved his way to stardom with highlight-reel KOs. Most recently, he dominated Javier Molina on his way to a 10-round unanimous decision victory in May. Prior to that fight, he had scored five-straight knockout victories following his only other pro fight that had gone the distance, which came in a June 2019 unanimous decision over Kevin Shacks. He has steadily increased the toughness of competition in 2020 and he has continued that trend in 2021 with Molina and now Mendoza.

"I’ve had a great training camp so far for this fight," said Ramos. "I feel a lot stronger, a lot more mature and I feel like I learned a lot from my last fight that I’m implementing into this camp. I expect a tough fight from Mendoza. I’m sure he’s coming to win and to take everything I’ve earned, but I’m going to make sure he doesn’t. You have to tune in on September 5 because it's going to be a good one!"

Mendoza (19-1, 13 KOs) earned a career best-victory in his last outing, beating veteran contender Thomas LaManna by unanimous decision in August 2020. The 27-year-old has fought professionally since 2014, with his only defeat coming by a narrow split-decision in November 2019 against Larry Gomez. Mendoza was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he won two New Mexico Golden Gloves Championships as an amateur, and currently fights out of Las Vegas.

“I’ve been grinding in the gym nonstop preparing for an opportunity like this,” said Mendoza. “I’ve been learning a lot and I believe that it’s time for the world to see the fighter I’ve become. I can’t wait to put my skills on display. Don’t miss this fight on September 5, it’s going to be explosive.”

The 25-year-old Castillo (15-0, 12 KOs) scored an emphatic knockout in his U.S. debut in July, blasting out then unbeaten Miguel Contreras in the second round. A native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Castillo turned pro in 2017 and has delivered knockout wins in his last four fights heading into September 5, with three of those stoppages coming in 2021.

“I am very honored to be fighting on a great platform like FOX,” said Castillo. “It’s humbling to perform under the bright lights and I can’t wait. My team and I have been working very hard and we are laser focused on Burgos. We’re going to be prepared for anything he tries to throw at me on fight night.”

The Tijuana, Mexico native Burgos (34-5-2, 21 KOs) has faced an impressive resume of top fighters throughout his extensive career, dropping world title bouts to Mikey Garcia and Hozumi Hasegawa, in addition to a draw in a 130-pound title tilt against Roman Martinez. The 33-year-old ended up on the short end of decisions in challenges of unbeaten champion Devin Haney in 2018 and undefeated Hector Tanajara in January 2020. Most recently, he dropped a decision to unbeaten contender Xavier Martinez in May.

“This fight is mine for the taking,” said Burgos. “Training is going great and everything is on track for fight night. My sole focus is to win and make Mexico proud, while proving that I am still the real deal.”

The 22-year-old Reséndiz (12-0, 8 KOs) made a successful U.S. debut in April, earning a decision victory over Quilisto Madera. Fighting out of Nayarit, Mexico, Reséndiz entered the Madera fight having won eight consecutive fights by knockout, including five in 2019 before he stopped Joaquin Murrieta in his lone 2020 outing.

“Since my last fight, all I keep thinking about is how I’m going to be a more polished fighter when I step back in the ring,” said Reséndiz. “Now it’s time to show everyone that I’m the next big boxing star to come out of Mexico. Hernández is a durable fighter who has been in the ring with some top level fighters, but he’s never been in the ring with a puncher like myself. I have plans to stop him and send a message to all the fighters in my division. I want to thank my promoters Warriors Boxing and Boxing Major League for this opportunity. I’m going to make sure the world knows my name after this fight.”

Fighting out of Fresno, California, Hernández (14-4-2, 3 KOs) has faced excellent competition in his career, battling a litany of tough fellow rising contenders. The 28-year-old has twice faced former unified super welterweight champion Jeison Rosario, fighting to a draw in their first meeting before losing the rematch. He has taken down then-unbeaten fighters in Kevin Newman and Thomas Hill, and most recently fought to a draw against Brandon Lynch in January.

“I know that I’m facing a tough fighter, but I believe that I’ve faced better competition than what Reséndiz brings,” said Hernández. “I’m training hard for this opportunity and I’m glad to be back in the ring. Fans can expect action in this fight. Our styles are definitely going to mesh and make for a memorable fight.”

Marcos Hernandez Shocks Jose Armando Resendiz in Upset Win

Marcos Hernandez chipped away until securing the upset win.

Jose Armando Resendiz saw his unbeaten record fall in dropping a ten-round, unanimous decision to the rugged Hernandez in their Fox-televised opener. Scores were 96-93. 96-93 and 97-92 in favor of Hernandez, who scored a second-round knockdown en route to preserving the well-earned victory Sunday evening at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Resendiz—a 22-year-old super middleweight from Nayarit, Mexico—carried the glossier record heading into the fight, though Hernandez the far more battle tested of the two and it showed throughout their Fox-televised opener. Two-way action was featured right from the opening bell and throughout their entertaining ten-round affair.

Fresno’s Hernandez gained a significant edge late in round two. Resendiz was having his moments prior to the two trading right hands, Hernandez—trained by the renowned Henry Ramirez—getting the better of the sequence as Resendiz staggered before stumbling into the ropes. Referee Mark Nelson ruled a knockdown, even as it was argued that the delayed reaction was aided by a slight push though to no avail.

Resendiz didn’t back down from the high-contact affair sought by Hernandez, with both boxers trading in every round. Hernandez was landing the most telling blows, even if by the slimmest of margins as Resendiz was often beaten to the punch.

Hernandez showed a world class chin in the fight when not taking the lead. Resendiz was able to connect with flush right hands and occasional left hooks, none so much as driving back Hernandez whose punches clearly carried the heavier impact. Hernandez cracked Resendiz with a left hook in round six and peppered the unbeaten Mexican with right hands in the second half.

Resendiz looked to turn things around down the stretch, landing with authority though unable to truly swing momentum in his favor. Hernandez continued to force the action when the two were at close quarters, waking through Resendiz’s stiff jab and right hand to respond with left hooks and uppercuts.

Hernandez improves to 15-4-1 (3 KOs) with the win, his first since July 2019 and after having gone 0-2-1 in his last three starts. He got the job done as the more accurate puncher, landing 132-of-394 total punches (33.5%).

Resendiz—who landed 128-of-507 total punches (25%)—falls to 12-1 (8KOs) with the first defeat of his young career.

Headlining the show, Jesus Ramos (16-0, 14 KOs) faces Brian Mendoza (19-1, 13 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round junior middleweight contest.

Starling Castillo Fends Off Former Title Challenger Juan Carlos Burgos In Decision Win

Starling Castillo was pushed to the limit in earning his latest victory.

Going ten rounds for the first time in his career, Dominican Republic’s Castillo fended off a tough challenge offered by former title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos in claiming a ten-round, unanimous decision victory.

Judges Josef Mason (98-92), Robert Hecko (97-93) and Mike Fitzgerald (96-94) all scored in favor of Castillo in an excellent lightweight battle Sunday evening live on Fox from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Castillo—a training stablemate of unbeaten junior middleweight contender Sebastian Fundora—was riding high following a second-round knockout of Miguel ‘Caveman’ Contreras in their battle of unbeaten prospects just two months ago. The 25-year-old Dominican southpaw proved to be ready for the next level, with that increase in competition coming in a stiff challenge from the well-experienced Burgos. Castillo was crisp with his power shots in the opening round, needing every bit of leverage on his right uppercut and chopping left hands as Burgos—who has never been in 42 fights following Sunday’s affair—refused to back down.

A fun two-way exchange in round two saw Burgos get the better of the action. The 33-year-old Tijuana native ate a right hook and responded with a looping left hook over the top to snap back the head of Castillo.

The battle swayed back in favor of Castillo in round three, still enduring his rough moments but otherwise dictating the pace through a long jab and combination punching. Burgos was successful in cutting off the ring, though unable to beat the younger Castillo to the punch once at close quarters.

Castillo put his superior boxing skills to use in rounds four and five. Less movement was offered by the unbeaten lightweight who dug in with his right uppercut both on the inside and from long range.

Burgos punched his way back into the fight in round six. The Mexican veteran connected with left hooks to the lean body of Castillo, who took the shots well but was being outmuscled during such exchanges.

Round seven saw Burgos charge forward, maintaining a tight guard as Castillo let his hands go and responded with jabs and right hands. Castillo remained poised, taking a step back to avoid Burgos’ shots and responding with jabs and chopping left hands.

Castillo returned to boxing and moving, forcing Burgos to follow him around the ring while working primarily behind his jab. Burgos let his hands go whenever managing to get Castillo within punching range but was often outworked during such exchanges.

Burgos took his shot in the final thirty seconds, riding out several flurries from Castillo to empty his own gas tank. Castillo—who has never previously been past eight rounds—could have easily boxed his way to victory but opted to show his fighting side. Rapid fire combinations landed along the ropes, though nearly punching himself out as Burgos responded with heavy blows at fight’s close.

The win provided valuable lessons for Castillo, who improves to 16-0 (12 KOs) with the points win after having scored four straight second-round knockouts.

Burgos falls to 34-6-2 (21 KOs), though proving to be a tough out for the next generation. The former three-time title challenger offered a stiff challenge in an otherwise widely-scored decision in favor of Xavier Martinez just four months ago in Carson, California.

Headlining the show, Jesus Ramos (16-0, 14 KOs) faces Brian Mendoza (19-1, 13 KOs) in a scheduled ten-round junior middleweight contest.

Jesus Ramos Outclasses Brian Mendoza In Junior Middleweight Debut

Jesus Ramos was forced to go the distance for his second straight fight, though far more satisfied with his performance this time around.

A well-rounded effort came of Ramos’ junior middleweight debut, turning away fellow prospect Brian Mendoza en route to a ten-round, unanimous decision victory. Judges Mike Fitzgerald (98-92), Robert Hecko (98-92) and Patrick Morley (98-92) agreed in awarding the bout to Ramos in the PBC on Fox main event Sunday evening live from The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Ramos looked far more filled out in a junior middleweight uniform, changing his weight and training regimen after being dissatisfied with an otherwise clear-cut win over Javier Molina this past May in Carson, California. The 20-year-old southpaw from Casa Grande, Arizona was poised in the ring against a well-prepared Mendoza.

Mendoza had his moments against one the sport’s brightest young talents, offering a different look for Ramos. Constant movement from the Albuquerque native—who trains out of Ismael Salas’ facility in Las Vegas—proved successful in the early going, though with Ramos showing his usual patience and poise far beyond his youth. Ramos worked primarily behind the jab while trying to pin down the elusive Mendoza, who was effective with his right hand in round two.

Ramos began to work the body in round three, a pivotal moment in an otherwise close fight to that point. Mendoza continued to move way from Ramos’ jab but was also getting caught with straight lefts as reddening and swelling began to develop around his right eye.

Rounds four and five saw Ramos effectively cut off the ring. Mendoza continued to use the exterior of the ring but quickly ran out of real estate as Ramos put more leverage behind his punches, particularly his right hook to the body.

Mendoza was unable to turn the tide as the fight entered the second half. Ramos didn’t allow him any room to move, prompting excessive clinching from Mendoza to the point of being issued a hard warning from referee Mark Nelson.

Ramos carried the action throughout the second half, including a brutally one-sided eighth round. Mendoza was running on fumes as Ramos repeatedly connected with straight left hands. Mendoza continued to clinch, to the point of risking a point deduction as he was getting tattooed with right hooks and body shots.

Mendoza was able to offer enough defense to make Ramos miss with several potential home run shots in round nine. Ramos saw a knockout in his sights but was a bit overzealous in his attack, with Mendoza ducking several looping left hands though not able to offer anything in return.

Salas implored Mendoza to let it all hang out in the tenth and final round, urging his charge to throw his right hand with confidence. Ramos never provided the opportunity for Mendoza, who returned to constant movement in avoiding the first stoppage defeat of his career.

It was instead a lopsided points win for Ramos, who goes the ten-round distance for the second straight time. The rising prospect landed of total punches as he improved to 17-0 (14 KOs).

Mendoza—who was of in total punches, according to Compubox—falls to 19-2 (13 KOs). The bout was his first in more than a year, having missed out on a June 26 clash versus former unified junior middleweight titlist Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams who withdrew due to injury.

Ramos will likely remain at junior middleweight moving forward, as their seems little room left for his 5’10” frame to squeeze back down to the welterweight limit.

I think its very smart to have shows like this televised. Gives us fans to follow guys like Ramos and Joey Spencer from their first fights. It allows the fighter to build a tv fan base very early in The Career.
