Re: Randall Tex Cobb documentary
Weirdly, I watched this last night. Cobb was a legit tough guy and as big a character as the sport ever produced. There are so many great quotes from him, some of which could not be repeated in this era. Not the most dynamic athlete or dedicated professional. A friend of mine went on some fishing trips with him in the 90's and said he was a blast, bigger than life. He seems to have disappeared from the public over the last decade. I hope he is doing well.

Cobb will forever be one of the great characters in the sport of boxing. In my personal opinion he was robbed in his fight against Ken Norton.
He was an arm puncher, therefore he did not get that many stoppages, but the man had unbelievable conditioning along with toughness.
He made a damn good transition from the sport of kickboxing into boxing, and after the Larry Holmes fight he had two bouts with heavyweight kickboxing champion John Jackson, splitting wins.
The biggest fight of his career was derailed, as he was scheduled to fight Muhammad Ali. Cobb saved the life of a newspaper reporter who wrote an unfavorable article about a local baseball team, defending the man from players armed with ball bats. As a consequence Cobb suffered a broken arm and was unable to do the fight with Ali.
I'm not one of those guys who knocks him, he certainly was a top 10 heavyweight. No he wasn't as good as Michael Dokes, who Cobb lost to twice, but I do believe he was just as good if not better than Scott LeDoux and others floating around at the time as the early 1980s was certainly one of the weaker eras in boxing history.

Cobb was a tough fighter without much boxing skills, but with natural strength and durability. He was around the top 20 and had some memorable affairs. In particular, his fights against Norton and Shavers were damn good.

Additional facts, Cobb years prior to this defeated the man helping to do commentary for the match Anthony Elmore. And a couple of years later he would rematch John Jackson and win.

tex looked dumb as a door nail but was a very sharp witty guy

A white heavyweight, who could talk, was dropped to the 80s scene. If he boxed better, he could become a massive star of the sport.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 18:52 tex looked dumb as a door nail but was a very sharp witty guy

Re: Randall Tex Cobb documentary
I think the controversial points loss to Ken Norton really must have Psychologically affected him of sorts afterwards.
(Cobb had bet his entire purse for it on himself )

Re: Randall Tex Cobb documentary
Cobb could have been a Champion ,he just didn't come across the right Champion .He was as tough as any and had incredible heart.
Not the most skilled, but he made up for it with durability and stamina and gameness.
Certain fighters are front runners. As long as they're ahead, its all good. But after they've thrown their best and the man in front of them is still there, and worse ,coming forward, their heart gives.
I think there are a few Champions that Cobb could have beaten.

Re: Randall Tex Cobb documentary
I don't think he was ever quite the same after the loss to Ken Norton.
sort of lost an edge IMOP after that.
Prior to his famous fight with Larry Holmes, Cobb was scheduled to fight Mike Weaver for his title
but got caught up in a bar room brawl in Philadlphia and had his arm broken with a tire iron.

Re: Randall Tex Cobb documentary
Cobb could KO Weaver, btw. Probably his best title opportunity.
