Press Release

Super middleweight contender Kyrone Davis will square off against Martez McGregor in an 8/10-round showdown that tops FS1 PBC Fight Night and on FOX Deportes this Sunday, September 5 from the Armory in Minneapolis.

The FS1 telecast begins at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT and will feature unbeaten prospect Justin Cardona (5-0, 3 KOs) in a six-round super lightweight affair, plus undefeated prospect Travon Marshall (2-0, 1 KO) in a four-round super welterweight bout, and super bantamweight prospect Michael Angeletti (3-0, 2 KOs) looking to remain unbeaten in a four-round duel against undefeated Mexican Alexis Salido (2-0, 1 KO).

The FS1 telecast will precede FOX PBC Fight Night which begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and is headlined by unbeaten rising star Jesús “Mono” Ramos Jr. taking on super welterweight contender Brian Mendoza in a 10-round showdown. In the FOX undercard, rising lightweight contender Starling “El Poli” Castillo battles former title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos in the 10-round co-main event, plus middleweight prospect Armando “El Toro” Reséndiz kicks off the broadcast against all-action Marcos “Madman” Hernández.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions and Warriors Boxing, are on sale now and can be purchased at The Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster.

A native of Monmouth, N.J., Davis (15-2-1, 6 KO) impressed against the toughest test of his career last time out, as he fought two-time super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell to a split-draw in February. It was the 26-year-old’s debut at super middleweight, after beginning his career at middleweight. Davis had won five of his six previous outings heading into the Dirrell clash on FOX. He will be opposed by the 31-year-old Maywood, Illinois-native McGregor (8-4, 6 KOs), who looks to snap a three-fight losing streak.

In non-televised action, veteran heavyweight Iago Kiladze (26-5-1, 18 KOs) faces Matthew McKinney (8-3-2, 5 KOs) for eight-rounds of action.

Kyrone Davis Survives Rough Fight With Martez McGregor In Eight-Round Decision Win

Kyrone Davis secured the win he thought he deserved in his previous outing, though in a fight where an upset was very much on the table.

Three points deducted from the scorecard of Martez McGregor proved costly and also spared Davis the humility of suffering a defeat in their high-contact affair Sunday evening at The Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Judges Robert Hecko (75-74), Kyle Shiely (75-74) and Josef Mason (77-72) were in agreement, awarding the bout to Davis who would have otherwise landed on the wrong end of a split decision in their PBC on FS1 headliner.

Davis was fighting for the first time since seeing his stock soar in a twelve-round draw with former two-time WBC super middleweight titlist Anthony Dirrell in February. That bout was the first for Davis at the weight, having previously campaigned at middleweight. He was slightly over the contracted 170-pound limit for Sunday’s affair, though still appeared to the smaller and leaner fighter compared to the compact McGregor, who has previously campaigned as high as light heavyweight.

Davis quickly found himself in a fight, as McGregor made things as rough as possible for the Wilmington, Delaware product. McGregor was working with a new corner, having joined trainer Willie Little two weeks ago and seemingly working on everything but in-ring focus. The Maywood, Illinois-based boxer played to the crowd throughout the bout—including during the live action.

Action swayed back and forth, with Davis—trained by noted cornerman Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards, who also hosts a weekly mailbag on BS.com—boxing well early and catching the attention of McGregor with combination punching on a number of occasions. McGregor displayed a clear edge in power, hurting Davis in round five with a right uppercut and a left hook. The 31-year-old—who came in riding a three-fight losing streak—lacked the focus to make Davis pay, instead shouting into the crowd and allowing distractions to cloud his judgement and performance.

Davis was the more accurate of the two, though with McGregor closing the gap in the later rounds. Three point deductions in a span of less than three minutes proved too costly, however. Both boxers were warned for hitting on the break in round five, prompted by Davis connecting with a right hand as referee Kevin McCarl ordered the two fighters to separate.

McGregor was deducted two points in round six for a blatant elbow while Davis was pinned along the ropes. Despite the infraction, the upset was still there for McGregor who won the round on the scorecards. That dynamic was no longer in play by the first minute of round seven, though due to a questionable deduction for hitting on the break. McGregor rightly punched himself free after Davis held down his left arm, though was docked for the effort in effectively taking a decision off the table.

The loss is the fourth straight for McGregor, who falls to 8-5 (6 KOs) though figures to get more work based on his competitive effort.

Davis advances to 16-2-1 (6 KOs), though seemingly gaining less traction for Sunday’s win than he did in his draw with Dirrell earlier this year.

The bout topped the four-fight preliminary card on FS1 preceding a televised tripleheader on Fox’s flagship network. Headlining the Fox portion, Jesus Ramos (16-0, 14 KOs) faces Brian Mendoza (19-1, 13KOs) in a scheduled ten-round junior middleweight contest.

Ramos-Mendoza: FOX’s PBC Tripleheader Averaged 735,000 Viewers, Peaked At 915,000

Viewership for FOX’s boxing broadcast increased Sunday night from its previous telecast, despite the fact that the network aired those three bouts on a holiday weekend.

Nielsen Media Research reported Wednesday that “FOX PBC Fight Night” drew an average of 735,000 viewers Sunday night for a tripleheader that featured unbeaten junior middleweight contender Jesus Ramos in the main event. Viewership peaked at 915,000 during Ramos’ convincing victory over Brian Mendoza, who lost a 10-round unanimous decision at The Armory in Minneapolis.

Earlier Sunday night, an average of 158,000 viewers watched FS1’s telecast of Ramos-Mendoza undercard bouts. That portion of the Ramos-Mendoza show featured super middleweight veteran Kyron Davis (16-2-1, 6 KOs), who edged underdog Martez McGregor (8-5, 6 KOs) in an eight-round light heavyweight match.
