Evander Holyfield Replaces Oscar De La Hoya, To Fight Vitor Belfort 9/11 In Florida On Triller PPV

The show must go on.

Oscar De La Hoya had to scrap his comeback fight after he was hospitalized due to contracting Covid on Friday. The 48-year-old De La Hoya was due to face former UFC champion Vitor Belfort on Sept. 11 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The fight was set to headline a Triller pay-per-view.

The upstart boxing producer, however, has apparently salvaged the show, calling on yet another Hall of Fame fighter in Evander Holyfield to step in to face Belfort on Sept. 11 in a professional boxing match at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla, Triller owner Ryan Kavanaugh told BS.com on Saturday.

Holyfield vs. Belfort is contracted to take place for a maximum of eight rounds at two minutes each. The entire undercard, including boxing matches between UFC legends Tito Ortiz and Anderson Silva, an exhibition between David Haye and Joe Fournier, and a bout between Andy Vences and Jono Carroll, will all move to Florida as well. The show’s PPV pricing of $49.99 will remain the same as well.

The California State Athletic Commission refused to sanction the 58-year-old Holyfield to fight, CSAC head Andy Foster told Boxing Scene, and therefore, Triller had to come up with an alternative strategy.

The four-time heavyweight champion Holyfield has not fought since 2011, but he’d been intending to make his return to the ring this year under the Triller banner.

After negotiations around a fight with Mike Tyson fell apart, Holyfield moved on determined to face former Tyson-conqueror Kevin McBride in an eight-round exhibition that was announced back in April for June 5 to provide chief support for the Teofimo Lopez Jr. vs. George Kambosos Jr. fight.

That lightweight bout, however, has been rescheduled several times, much to the dismay of Holyfield.

The Hall of Fame fighter filed an arbitration against Triller with the California-based Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services earlier this week seeking more than $5 million that he was owed for the McBride fight.

That case appears to be a moot point for now, as Holyfield is one week away from returning to the ring.

It wasn’t for the exhibition he originally signed up for, however. Holyfield now has a real fight on his hands that will count on his professional record.

Holyfield, a cruiserweight king till the late 80s, finished his career with 44 wins (29 KOs), 10 losses and 2 draws.

This shìt is ridiculous.

Not great news for Vitor Belfort either. Would've expected Oscar to smoke him so having Holyfield step in seems like madness. Depends how serious Evander takes it i guess but this kinda stuff is usually over with a dig to the body in r1.

I really hope they treat it as a soft spar, Holyfield gets his $5m of whatever it is, has enough to live on now and Triller make a big loss from all of the guaranteed purses they’ve agreed.

So Belfort is 44 and Holy 58! Evander surely will get beaten up he's almost a pensioner and has had a hard hard career.

Here he is training. He looks great for a 58 year old but come on, surely he gets beaten by Belfort, who i don't know much about but must be able to beat an old man....

Belfort is younger, but he is also shot. He hasn't been that durable through his entire career in comparison to Holyfield, while he finished it in a more lackluster fashion than Holy. He is less tough for sure. Plus, Holy is bigger and obviously the fight gotta be on the Evander's territory. So, I think Grandpa Holy will whoop Vitor.

I guess he looks good for 58 - not seen many 58 year olds hit the bag or go on the pads with evil intent though - however compared to his peak he is very slow.

Hmmmm I wonder whether it will just be a messy distance fight with. Either committing. Whatever these kind of fights are an awful indictment of modern boxing. I think I’m gonna get into Bas Ruttens new Karate Combat. I prefer it to UFC

Well, generally I don't like such kind of fights too, but in this particular case I'm even a bit excited, cause I'm a huge fan of Holy and I think it's a good matchup even for the 58 year old Holy. Anyway, it's indeed not a good sign, that such kind of fight drag more attention than some modern top fights. Anyway, I still prefer boxing and I had a brief interest in the UFC, which faded away.

Re UFC - me too. I can’t commit to it, but it serves up good matches repeatedly. But there’s nothing better than a great boxing match. But they’re just not happening.

Also as a big Holy fan, surely you should want him to retire. That big shiny third glove of his has taken too many shots! :D :D

...with Donald Trump on commentary duties according to fightnews. I think logically at 58 physically it won’t be the Holyfield people remember. A lot of muscle mass will be gone and he’ll probably look a bit of the frail side. This is probably a soft spar.

Yeah it’s hard to predict. Holy is almost 60 FFS! Also I remember how bad Tyson and Jones looked…. the timing, reflexes, fluidity was awful…. And After loads of fans were stating that Tyson would KO Wilder after seeing him hit he lads for a few seconds…. Wilder would murder Tyson……

I still feel it will be a messy and unsatisfactory sparring type session that will go the distance. I wonder how much Holyfield weighs now? He looked slim in those training videos, though those are from 2020 and he will no doubt be back on the juice….

Tragic how boxing became this sh1t…..

FiteTV reckon Holyfield is looking better than ever :o :o

WTF. He looks terrible. Not for A 58 year old. But for someone about to have a boxing contest against a man 14 years younger than him. Boxing is so depressing now…..
