Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
So Sunny is a world champion and been quite impressive. But despite his Twitter ‘celebrity’ he will never make big money. Also he’s 8 stone and 5ft3. So won’t get the respect a big man gets; he would be beaten to a pulp by the average pub fighter and would have no chance against a big bouncer.
So would you prefer to be a Heavy who will never be world champion and is somewhat of a gatekeeper to the world class fighters?
Say a Chisora. Or maybe a Dave Allen is a better suggestion. Obviously Chis has at least boxed for the world title and has earned millions which Edwards never will, so maybe that’s an unfair comparison.
Dave Allen will surely earn more than Sunny, so would David Price, even Nathan Gorman.
And who wants to be a 5ft3 8 stone man? I would hate it. However Edwards can always say he’s a world champion, but what does that mean when if he walked into a pub and declared ‘I can whip any man in the house!’ He would be going home in an ambulance?
I’d rather be a Dave Allen by miles

Edwards and Mr Allen is a journeyman not a gatekeeper.

So you asked the question just for people to agree with you. Your opinion only makes sense when you give af what strangers think. Sunny will probably be fine and earn good money over his career span. World champ also.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:05Why? Imagine being 5ft3 and 8 stone compared to a 17 stone man who no one would push around? Also Allen will earn more than Edwards

No I’m stating my opinion. And anybody who doesn’t care what others think, how they treat you and talk to you is lying.emallini wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:14So you asked the question just for people to agree with you. Well, it's two questions, really - given your justification.
I'd rather be a little world champion than a big gatekeeper.
One is that top of the game, the other isn't.
I wouldn't feel any sense of achievement in knowing that I could win a fight with some blokes down the pub -- cus I've never had, nor wanted, a fight with a bloke down the pub.

Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
Terry Lawless said heavyweights earn their money because 'their careers are short and they take some proper punishment' there have been tough journeymen heavyweights like 1980's Welsh hardcase Andy Gerrard but not too many.
Who would I rather be? Neither - because professional boxing takes too much toll on your physical body and your cranium and what's inside it. Weight making to get down to eight stone would be very hard but the life of a heavyweight gatekeeper is very hard also, for different reasons.
What I would have liked to have been was an excellent amateur on a salary going to the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games but I wasn't good enough or anywhere near that level and salaried amateurs weren't around back then - so, yeah....

Well that’s a bit of a simplification. And you’re missing the money aspect.Lenny Cravats wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:25 Well, it's two questions, really - given your justification.

Another simplification. If you’re suggesting the average person doesn’t respect physicality or size you’re tripping. Being small is embarrassing. Looking up to everyone. Being ignored. Women laughing at you when asking them out. Come on who do you think gets more women? Allen or Edwards!!!? Or it mention Allen is a good looking fella and Sunny looks like a foetusemallini wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:20Having the edge of being able to push people about over being world champion?JamesPhilips wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:15No I’m stating my opinion. World champ every day of the week, fighters earnings don't interest me one iota
Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
You have created some world in your head based on stereotypes. In the real world, Sunny is fine and so is Allen. Both hardly get any trouble when out and life is the same. Maybe Sunny gets some short/small jokes here and there. But the world you have created does not exist. Only in your dome.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:42Another simplification. Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
Genetics is a bitch and dictate a lot of your life.
From a boxing aspect i would say Edwards. Chisora probably the best gatekeeper in recent times. He never wins a main event but British public love him.
Guess it depends if you love the lime light. I would hate to be famous to the general public. Edwards could probably make 100x more money smart investing outside of boxing.

Not really. It’s about your ‘clout’ in normal life. How many small people wish they were bigger? All of them I would suggest. I don’t know any short man especially 8 stone who doesn’t wish he was biggerSteveh583 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:14that sounds a tad insecureJamesPhilips wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 14:05Why? Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
Slide in Allens DMs if you feel this strong about it. He might be game.
Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
in that case, I'd rather the 'clout' of being able to say i was a genuine world champ for the rest of my life.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:18Not really. Its not like either chisora or allen are particularly body beautiful. So I'd go for Sunny.
Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
What the hell is this? Yes I would want to be a world champion instead of some big guy who was reasonably good at boxing for a while

He is not a journeyman., he headlined the 02…. As the a side and won. Allen is an anomaly. He has played almost a high levle journeyman a few times (vs whyte, Ortiz, yoka.) but that’s it. Every other fight he was booked to win.
Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
people try to redefine what a journeyman is nowadays.gregregegg wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:52He is not a journeyman., he headlined the 02…. As the a side and won. Allen is an anomaly. He is definitely a journeyman. You have fell for the con. Probably a new boxing fan.gregregegg wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:52He is not a journeyman., he headlined the 02…. As the a side and won. Re: Who would you rather be? Sunny Edwards or Gatekeeper heavyweight?
He's right though, Allen is a bit of an anomaly. Good enough chin and defence (when he uses it) to go deep against real world-level fighters and enough power to snatch the occasional win at that level (shot Browne). Yet at the same time his speed and offence is so mediocre he gets absolutely battered by a long-past it Price back at domestic level.Steveh583 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:53people try to redefine what a journeyman is nowadays.gregregegg wrote: ↑07 Sep 2021, 15:52He is not a journeyman., he headlined the 02…. Maybe he's the new Ross Purrity?
