So won’t get the respect a big man gets; he would be beaten to a pulp by the average pub fighter and would have no chance against a big bouncer.

So would you prefer to be a Heavy who will never be world champion and is somewhat of a gatekeeper to the world class fighters?

Say a Chisora. Or maybe a Dave Allen is a better suggestion. Obviously Chis has at least boxed for the world title and has earned millions which Edwards never will, so maybe that’s an unfair comparison.

Dave Allen will surely earn more than Sunny, so would David Price, even Nathan Gorman.

And who wants to be a 5ft3 8 stone man? I would hate it. However Edwards can always say he’s a world champion, but what does that mean when if he walked into a pub and declared ‘I can whip any man in the house!’ He would be going home in an ambulance?

I’d rather be a Dave Allen by miles

Former Boxing News editor Claude Abrams thought this way prior to a sparring session with Naseem Hamed in 1995. Abrams really thought that because Naz was small he was nothing. Naz held him up. You can see it on youtube. Naz regularly beat up heavyweight pro Adam Fogerty in the gym.
Reigning world featherweight champion Jeff Fenech flattened a 17-stone bouncer in Atlantic City in 1989 when he was over to watch Jeff Harding defeat Dennis Andries. Flyweight Charlie Magri hit so hard he could only spar men of lightweight and above. A 14-year-old Tony Ayala beat up world welterweight champion Pipino Cuevas in sparring. Former world bantamweight champion Peter Keenan walloped Sonny Liston with a left hook. I also saw Keenan let Mickey Duff have a right hand. Both Liston and Duff backed down.
Featherweight Danny Lopez knocked out middleweights in the gym.
Yes but that’s in sparring not a fight outside. Also Sunny Edwards is a non puncher. I’m sure Fogerty couldn’t lay a glove on Naz in sparring but outside he would just grab him and smash him into the ground. That’s not to say Hamed couldn’t chin many larger men outside no problem….. but Naz was an exceptional puncher, very different to Sunny. Also Naz is a heavyweight these days lol
As said - Naz and Abrams sparred .. a sharp, fit, big punching 9st person versus an unfit guy who spends most days sat on his arse is not a fair comparison.
Jeff Fenech walked around at around 11st during his superfeatherweight fights.

Back to topic.
A gatekeeper heavyweight like Chisora will be financially secure. I doubt Edwards has earnt enough to say that yet.

Being a non puncher in a boxing sense doesn’t mean he’s a non puncher in real life, with a bare fist against some pub muppet any pro boxer (or amateur) can do some real damage, I’ve seen little fighters bash up bigger blokes in pubs and I’ve also heard about fighters of all sizes receiving a beating in pubs.

There was one fella on here that is now in nick. He had a couple of pro lightweight fights, didn't do anything, was knocking on fifty, smacked a bigger fella outside the pub and killed him.

Yeah there’s a big difference between swinging a fist and throwing an educated punch, the results can be devastating.

Yeah Gomez did it at 9 stone or thereabouts. But boxing and no rules are different. In boxing you can't pick someone up, throw them around, sit on them etc.

Who throws the first punch is also important. Hatton got kod by a bodybuilder in the pub when he was giving it the large

The 'were you there' argument can be applied to almost anything to discount any story. Its not a solid argument. Other people reported it. Go and ask them :TU:

My advice to you 13 odd stone, beer gutted aspiring bridgerweight champs..... Don't pick on pro boxers, even if they are small or didn't do much.... It might well end badly and there will be no referee to stop it.

Most boxers are quite equipped at the ancient, noble art of street fighting and it's normally where you start off before you go down the gym.

Graham Brett was his name and he was a super feather weight, 2 wins against fighters who had one win between them and 2 loses, and he had hit 50 too, prob better than the average pub fighter

I don't think many pro fighters hang around in pubs because of the grief that comes with it - most people are fine but there's always one! :TU:

But most people just aren't fit and capable enough of taking on a professional fighter whatever their size, it isn't like the old days of tough miners and factory workers who walked/ran everywhere and we're just fitter because they didn't have a car - these days, you have people who don't walk more than half a mile in any one week!

Hatton was playing a bandit and got clobbered from behind - for no reason apparently - who knows why Hatton got clobbered but that he thought he could hang around the places before he got fame just sort of shows what a folly hanging around pubs when you are a former pro fighter with a bit of money, is. I don't think you would catch Sunny Edwards anywhere near a pub - making eight stone must be murder as it is. :maybe:

Brett was a few years, and a few stone away from his superfeather weight days. That the other guy didn't want to fight likely made a lot of difference too.

Someone around 11st can hold their own against most. Someone scraping 5'4" and 8-9st is gonna have problems with most motivated people .. aside from the sucker-punch non fights; most pub fights end up as a wrestling mess .. a 8-9 stone guy ain't doing a lot in those circumstances.

 oh dear that’s a bit of an overreaction. :D it’s funny how upset people are about a fun thread asking a question about fighters (as there’s not much boxing going on)…. I bet you and others getting upset are on the short / small side and it’s hit a nerve? That can be the only explanation - I mean imagine getting so upset over an inoffensive internet post!? :D

Go on - tell us how tall / heavy you are? I bet you’re like 5ft5 with a massive chip on your shoulder aren’t you? :OhYes: :OhYes:

I’ve known quite a few guys in my time who’ve claimed to be top ‘pub’ / ‘street’ fighters. I wouldn’t back many of them against a pro boxer, even at the very lightest weights.

Both were about 11 1/2 stone apart from 2-3 days a year.
The most important thing to remember is, as Coco said, the boxers don't stick to Queensbury rules. Most are very, very good at street fighting. Like Rocky.
