Press Release

Undefeated 122-pound world champions will go toe-to-toe as WBC champion Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa and WBO champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton Jr. meet in the SHOWTIME main event Saturday, September 18 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Park Theater at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will include undefeated super bantamweight contender Ra’eese Aleem battling Mexico’s Eduardo Baez in the 10-round co-main event. Opening the telecast, unbeaten rising bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell takes on Mexico’s Alejandro Barrios in a 10-round showdown.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

“This night of high-stakes action is headlined by two undefeated young stars in one of the most anticipated fights of the year.” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “The winner of this fight will not only hold the mantle as the division’s best but will have a case as one of the top pound-for-pound rising stars in the sport. With Ra’eese Aleem and Gary Antonio Russell also on the card, the future of the sport takes centerstage on September 18.”

The three-fight boxing event will open SHOWTIME’s combat sports doubleheader on September 18. Immediately following the main event from Las Vegas, BELLATOR MMA will air live from San Jose, Calif., with a three-fight event headlined by light heavyweight contenders Phil Davis and Yoel Romero.

Figueroa vs. Fulton has loomed as a potential showdown for several years prior to the two unbeaten fighters joining the world championship ranks with career-best performances in 2021. Fulton struck first, dominating then-unbeaten Angelo Leo to capture the WBO title in January, while Figueroa made his own statement in stopping two-division champion Luis Nery to capture the WBC strap in May.

The 24-year-old Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) used his youth and relentless pressure to become the first person to defeat Nery in their championship clash on SHOWTIME. Figueroa’s body attack was the difference, as he was able to stand up against Nery’s offense and eventually overwhelm him to earn the knockout. A native of Weslaco, Texas, Figueroa added to his family’s legacy in capturing the world title, joining his brother Omar Figueroa who previously held the lightweight world championship. Figueroa took down a slew of veteran contenders on his way to championship status, knocking out Moises Flores, Oscar Escandon and Damien Vazquez on his ascent.

“We train hard for every fight and make sure we go 110% come fight night,” said Figueroa. “I expect Fulton to be flashy and slick with his movements, and perhaps he’ll want to mix it up a little as well, so we’re ready for anything. People know I always come to fight and with this being my second back-to-back fight against another undefeated world champion it makes this an exciting fight on paper and it should be even more exciting to see it live on September 18.”

Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Pa., Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) faced impressive competition while rising up the 122-pound rankings to earn the opportunity that eventually saw him become world champion on SHOWTIME by besting Leo. In his last 13 professional fights, the 27-year-old has beaten eight previously undefeated fighters, including Leo, Josh Greer, Arnold Khegai, Adam Lopez and Luis Saul Rosario. Trained in his hometown by coach Wahid Rahim, Fulton has displayed sublime boxing skills that have allowed him to dominate opponents of varying styles and control fights from start to finish.

“We will have a new king of the division on a historic day,” said Fulton. “Training camp has been great, rough and dirty. I know where I need to be for this fight and I’m right there not running away from it. History will be made September 18 on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas. Let’s celebrate with a bang!”

Owning a top-10 ranking at 122-pounds from multiple sanctioning bodies, Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs) put on the most impressive performance of his career in January to capture the interim WBA title on SHOWTIME. Aleem dominated in a battle of unbeatens, dropping Victor Pasillas four times before eventually stopping him in round 11. Raised in Michigan and training out of Las Vegas, Nev., Aleem, 31, has stopped his past seven opponents inside the distance.

“It’s great to be back fighting on SHOWTIME,” said Aleem. “I’ve been waiting patiently, working hard in the gym, and now it’s go time. Eduardo Baez is a good fighter who is trying to make a name for himself, but he’s standing in my way of becoming world champion, and I’m going to take him out. I’m on a mission to prove I’m the king of the super bantamweight division, and the journey continues on September 18.”

The 26-year-old Baez (19-1-2, 6 KOs) will look to earn a career-best victory and build on back-to-back triumphs over previously unbeaten fighters when he takes on Aleem on September 18. Originally from Baja California, Mexico, Baez now fights out of Calexico, California as he nears his second stateside outing. Baez most recently won a decision over Abimael Ortiz in March, after his U.S. debut saw him defeat Narek Abgaryan in his U.S. debut in December 2020.

“I can’t wait for this opportunity against Ra’eese Aleem,” said Baez. “Success is the most precious treasure, the more you are willing to pay, the more valuable the prize will be. I will win this fight and we will all scream ‘viva Mexico!’”

The middle brother between WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and 2016 U.S. Olympian Gary Antuanne, Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs) announced his arrival amongst the bantamweight division contenders with a technical decision over former world champion Juan Carlos Payano in December 2020 on SHOWTIME. The 28-year-old from Capitol Heights, Md. turned pro in 2015 after an impressive amateur career. After four wins in 2019, Russell kicked off 2020 defeating Jesus Martinez in February. Russell returns to action after his August 14 fight against former champion Emmanuel Rodriguez ended in a no-decision in round one due to a clash of heads.

“I’m excited to be back after I trained so hard for my last fight before it ended early,” said Russell. “Now, I’m just taking that same fight energy that I had for Emmanuel Rodriguez and bringing it on September 18 for my new opponent.”

The 25-year-old Barrios (24-2-5, 13 KOs) has not been beaten since 2014, a streak spanning 20 fights. Representing his native Tijuana, Mexico, Barrios has won his last eight contests since a 2018 draw against Jerwin Ancajas in a 115-pound title bout. After defeating Erick Hernandez and Willibaldo Garcia in 2020, Barrios knocked out Juan Gabriel Medina to begin his 2021. In addition to the draw against Ancajas, Barrios has fought then unbeaten Jose Martinez-Mercado to a draw twice while also earning the same result against then undefeated Antonio Nieves.

“I want to thank my whole team and everyone else who made this fight possible,” said Barrios. “It has been a long road for me. I’ve been looking for another title fight or a rematch with Ancajas, ever since our draw. We decided to move up to 118-pounds and I’ve just remained focused and worked hard for the next opportunity. Now I get to share the ring with a great and talented fighter in Gary Antonio Russell. On September 18, I will leave everything in that ring, put on a great fight for all boxing fans and leave victorious.”

Brandon Figueroa Tests Positive For Covid, Forced To Postpone Title Unification With Stephen Fulton

Another intriguing fight has been removed from the schedule.

Brandon Figueroa has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled junior featherweight title unification clash with Stephen Fulton (19-0, 8KOs) after testing positive for Covid-19, both boxers confirmed Monday. Figueroa (22-0-1, 17KOs) was due to put his WBC title on the line in a bid to fight for Fulton’s WBO belt, with their bout to have headlined the September 18 edition of Showtime Championship Boxing from Park MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"My fight will be postponed till further notice as I tested positive for covid and so did my team/family," Figueroa announced Monday through his Instagram account. "I’ve worked so hard for this fight and was so close to finishing camp strong but unfortunately there was nothing more I could’ve done. I tried to let it pass and still manage to fight but I wasn’t feeling too well and especially being the last 2 weeks leading to my fight which are the most crucial.

"I just want to say thank you to all my fans and supporters, this is a fight I don’t want to let slip and I will come back stronger than ever. I’m gonna recover from this and come back and finish what I came to do and bring that belt back home. For the meantime I’m gonna continue and try to maintain myself in fight shape as my next fight date will be announced soon. I got to look after my health but my fighting spirit will never leave. Those of you that know Team Figueroa know that we never back down from a fight."

Figueroa and Fulton were both attempting the first defense of their respective titles they claimed earlier this year.

Philadelphia’s Fulton soundly outpointed unbeaten Angelo Leo to win the WBO belt this past January. The bout came five months after Fulton was originally scheduled to face Leo for the crown, only to have to withdraw due to testing positive for COVID shortly before the first Showtime card since the pandemic. Leo went on to face Tramaine Williams, whom he outpointed to win the vacant WBO belt before losing to Fulton earlier this year.

One other junior featherweight bout was to have taken place next weekend, with unbeaten Ra’eese Aleem (18-0, 12KOs) to face resurgent contender Eduardo Baez (19-1-2, 6KOs). The idea of either boxer stepping in to replace Figueroa in order to salvage the show would only result in delaying a more-desired Fulton-Figueroa unification bout, which could still take place later this year should Figueroa recover in time.

Figueroa earned the WBC belt by stopping unbeaten Luis Nery in the seventh round of their May 15 Showtime headliner at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Figueroa entered the bout with a secondary version of the WBA junior featherweight title, which he will be forced to vacate once he eventually enters the ring to face Fulton. The WBO does not recognize any other sanctioning body’s secondary titles, nor did the WBA approve Figueroa to enter a fight under such circumstances.

A new fight date is expected to be announced in the coming days. Fulton seems to believe it could take place as early as October, revealing such news while empathizing with his rival’s plight.

“Prayers out to Brandon hope he recover,” Fulton tweeted Monday upon learning the news. “I did everything great on my end. Testing sparing partners and coaches even isolating myself from my family and friends for months.

“Of course I am upset but I have been here before, I’ll be even stronger come October. Never make me mad!”

Stephen Fulton aims at October for Brandon Figueroa

Stephen Fulton may remember 9:36 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 7 for a while. The WBO junior featherweight titlist from Philadelphia knows the exact time, because that’s when Wahid Rahim, Fulton’s manager and trainer, woke him up Tuesday morning to tell him Brandon Figueroa tested positive for COVID-19 and their highly anticipated unification fight for September 18 in Las Vegas was off.

Fulton (19-0, 8 knockouts) is ranked No. 3 by The Ring at 122, while Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs) holds the WBC belt and is ranked No. 4 by Ring.

“When Wahid walked into my room that early (Tuesday morning), the reason I looked at my phone was because it had to be something important,” Fulton recalled to The Ring exclusively. “The first thing out of Wahid’s mouth was ‘Brandon has COVID,’ because someone called Wahid to let him know. I looked right at my phone and saw 9:36 and the first thing out of my mouth was ‘You serious!’

“Well, that might have been the second thing out of my mouth (laughs).”

Team Fulton arrived in Las Vegas from Philadelphia on Wednesday, September 1 for the Figueroa fight at the Park MGM in Las Vegas. Fulton returned to his hometown on Wednesday morning for what he says will be either an October 23 or October 30 date to fight Figueroa, 24, at a venue and city to be determined.

The whole PBC on Showtime show has been cancelled.

Fulton, who has two sons including a baby boy, admitted he wasn’t angry at Figueroa, because he himself tested positive for COVID-19 in July 2020, postponing his fight against Angelo Leo for the vacant WBO 122-pound title. Instead, Leo won the WBO belt by stopping Tramaine Williams in 11 on Aug. 1, 2020.

Fulton, 27, then beat Leo in January for the WBO belt. Fulton clarified that he is steamed over waiting again toward his dream of becoming the undisputed junior featherweight champion.

“This is different because when I came down with COVID, the fight still took place and I had to watch someone take the belt that was supposed to be mine,” he said. “Figueroa doesn’t have to watch anyone fight like I did. I still have to wait for him. I’ve been in training camp since June.

“Unfortunately, I have to wait until October for this fight. I’m not angry at Brandon personally because of one condition, he has COVID, and it’s a life-changing situation and a hell that I went through. Brandon could have been hospitalized. That’s Brandon’s life right there, and that comes above everything else. I had that s—t before. I know how it feels to have it. I know how low I felt when I had it. It’s why I’m not mad at Brandon personally.

“But I am more motivated. I have a lot of hostility in me, I have a lot of anger in me, more so because I’ve been sacrificing a lot. I have my sons that I can’t see, including by new son. Boxing is a lonely sport. You put your body through a lot, and it’s hard to maintain these things.

“I’ve been 130 since August 14 until I heard Brandon had COVID. I need to get my body back bigger, so I can get my natural strength back. So, for me to hold 130 for another month, I can’t do that.”

Fulton said he will take a week off and give his body some rest. He plans on staying in the gym and trying to maintain, before he begins training again. He says he’ll carry around 135 pounds before he starts cutting weight.

“I want to see Brandon come back 100 percent, I want to face the best Brandon Figueroa there is,” Fulton said. “I don’t want any excuses when I beat him. That’s a big deal to me. I came back stronger and better after I had COVID. I hope Brandon does the same. We’re looking at a seven-week span so Brandon can come back and get healthy. This fight needs to be in October, because I don’t need this stretched out any more to November. I can’t put my body through this again.

“I want two fights this year. I’ve been in training camp for four months. I feel in the best shape of my life. I feel in better shape than I did when I fought Leo. After I beat Brandon, I want one more fight at 122, MJ (The Ring’s No. 1-rated Murodjon Akhmadaliev, the IBF/WBA titlist), then I’ll go up after Leo Santa Cruz at 126.

“I have to wait a little longer for what I want. Someone is going to pay for that.”

I love how Figueroa beat Nery. Nery tasted his own medicine in that fight - being savagely beaten by bigger and stronger guy. Fulton on other side impressed me in both Khegai and Leo fights. He is definetly multi dimensional. He boxed against Khegai and he outbrawled Leo. Looking forward in this fight, Fulton is my favorite :box: :box: :box:

Brandon Figueroa-Stephen Fulton Fight Rescheduled For November 27 On Showtime

Brandon Figueroa and Stephen Fulton have received a new date for their 122-pound title unification fight.

BS.com has learned that Figueroa and Fulton will headline a rescheduled “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader November 27, the Saturday night after Thanksgiving Day. The site for the card headlined by Figueroa-Fulton, which was supposed to take place this Saturday night at Park MGM’s Park Theater in Las Vegas, will remain the same.

Figueroa contracted COVID-19 earlier this month. The unbeaten WBC super bantamweight champion withdrew from their bout early last week.

The postponement was announced September 7. Figueroa has already returned to the gym, which enabled Al Haymon’s PBC and Showtime to rearrange this three-bout broadcast rather quickly.

Philadelphia’s Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) and Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, will fight for Fulton’s WBO junior featherweight title and Figueroa’s WBC crown.

The rest of this postponed tripleheader will remain intact as well.

In the 10-round, co-featured fight, Ra’eese Aleem (18-0, 12 KOs), of Muskegon, Michigan, will meet Mexico’s Eduardo Baez (19-1-2, 6 KOs). The Aleem-Baez bout initially was planned as a 12-rounder for Aleem’s WBA interim super bantamweight championship, but the WBA eliminated all of its interim titles late last month in response to intense criticism initiated by the outcome of a controversial 12-round WBA interim welterweight championship match in which unbeaten Venezuelan Gabriel Maestre scored a suspicious, split-decision victory over American Mykal Fox on August 7 at The Armory in Minneapolis.

Showtime’s telecast will begin November 27 with another 10-round bout between top bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs, 1 NC), of Capitol Heights, Maryland, and Mexican veteran Alexandro Santiago (24-2-5, 13 KOs).

This tripleheader will mark Showtime’s second COVID-related, rescheduled show in November.

The premium cable network first will air a three-fight telecast November 13 from Footprint Center, which will feature former WBC super middleweight champ David Benavidez at the home venue of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns. Phoenix’s Benavidez (24-0, 21 KOs) is set to oppose Venezuela’s Jose Uzcategui (31-4, 26 KOs) in the 12-round main event, a WBC elimination match.

Benavidez and Uzcategui were scheduled to fight August 28 at the same venue. That card was postponed August 11 because Benavidez tested positive for COVID-19.

Benavidez’s older brother, Jose Benavidez Jr., will compete in Showtime’s co-feature November 13. Jose Benavidez Jr. (27-1, 18 KOs) will square off against Argentina’s Francisco Torres (17-3, 5 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

Jose Benavidez Jr. hasn’t fought since WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) stopped him in the 12th round of their October 2018 bout at CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska, Crawford’s hometown.

Fulton: Delaying Figueroa Fight Was Disappointing, But That's Somebody's Health, Life

Stephen Fulton has been in Brandon Figueroa’s position.

Fulton pulled out of his WBO junior featherweight title fight against Angelo Leo due to COVID-19 just three days before they were supposed to square off for that then-vacant championship in August 2020. The Philadelphia native therefore had a unique understanding of how Figueroa felt when he withdrew from their 122-pound title unification fight 11 days before it was scheduled to take place on September 18th in Las Vegas.

“It was a little disappointing, but that’s somebody’s health, somebody’s life, too,” Fulton told BS.com. “So, I had to understand it from a different point of view. [Having COVID-19] made me understand it more and a lot of people are dying from it. Our health is more important than anything first, so that’s the first thing I understood. That’s why I wasn’t mad. I was just disappointed that I couldn’t fight.”

The 12-round bout between Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, and Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) was rescheduled for November 27, the Saturday night after Thanksgiving Day. Their fight for Figueroa’s WBC super bantamweight championship and Fulton’s WBO belt will take place at Park MGM’s Park Theater, the same venue at which they were supposed to headline a “Showtime Championship Boxing” tripleheader last month.

Fulton had hoped Figueroa’s bout with COVID-19 would be brief, so that their fight could be rearranged for October 2. Fulton, whose fight with Leo was postponed for 5½ months, realized, though, that quickly re-booking their fight was unlikely.

“At first, it was like, ‘Let’s see how fast we can get it [rescheduled],’ ” Fulton said. “But I already understand because of the caliber of the fight, the money on everyone’s end, I knew it wasn’t gonna happen two weeks later. So, I had already prepared myself for the month or two-month [postponement], actually. I just don’t want him to make no excuses when it’s time. But I don’t feel it’ll be postponed again.”

The 27-year-old Fulton took a week off from training once he learned that their fight was postponed. He took steps to avoid overtraining for a fight that remains more than six weeks away.

“I needed that little break from the gym,” Fulton said. “You don’t wanna overtrain, so the more active you are, the more you’re just getting through the workouts and tightening up little things. Then, as we get a little closer, then we can go a little bit harder and then start to bring it back down, getting ready for the fight, getting ready to perform.”
