I correct myself. It was a straight right hand by Finito that caused the knockout. Melchor's asset was that he was brave and had courage, will and determination. That's it.elmersalsa wrote: ↑05 Sep 2021, 15:14 Finito's 9th title defense of his WBC World Strawweight Championship belt was against former IBF king counterpart Manny Melchor of the Philippines.
Melchor must have been one of the worst fighters in boxing history to ever held a world title belt. He came to the ring with a record of 25-19-4 with only 6KO wins. How in the world this Pinoy became a world champion? I don't know. He was completely overmatch against this great champion.
The fight was held on Saturday, September 18, 1993 at the Caesars Tahoe in Stateline, NV. A total mismatch in which one could see the champ's superiority. Hey!, a champion does not have to fight a great fighter every fight. Sometimes you need to fight with easy opponents. That happened to the best of them like the greats Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali and Roberto Duran and others. As champions, they also had easy challengers.
Finito did not lose a round. The fight was all Mexico's! And tge fight ended by knockout of a product of a Finito's left hook. Referee Joe Cortez of Puerto Rico counted to 10 and Finito kept his crown for the 9th time.
Now, Finito at this point, was compared with the elite boxers of his day. A superfight with Jr Flyweight champ Michael Carbajal of Phoenix, AZ was probably in the works.
Finito improves to 36-0, with 26KOs. Melchor kept fighting and retired with a record of 38-35-6 with only 10KOs.?
All of Finito's 9 tiitle defenses so far were against Oriental Far East boxers.
George Dixon doesn't have nothing to prove. He is s true all-time great pound per pound.Onetimeonly wrote: ↑23 Sep 2021, 16:54No doubt, though Dixon being black and Canadian might be the worst rationale yet. Pascal Perez is still to. Come.
