Jaime Munguia, Gabriel Rosado In Talks For Fall Showdown

Jaime Munguia didn’t have to look far in search of his next challenger once he realized a title fight wasn’t next in store.

Talks continue to progress for a potential fall crossroads bout between Tijuana’s Munguia (37-0, 30 KOs) and Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KOs), representatives from both camps confirmed to BS.com. Such a bout would take place at middleweight, where Munguia—a former junior middleweight titlist—remains the number-one contender to both the WBC and WBO titles.

The building blocks for such a fight began in June, when both appeared and scored knockout wins on the same DAZN show this past June 19 in El Paso, Texas. Munguia stopped former title challenger Kamil Szeremeta (21-2, 5 KOs) after six rounds in the evening’s main event. Stealing the show that night, Rosado flattened previously unbeaten Bektemir ‘Bek Bully’ Melikuziev (7-1, 6 KOs) inside of three rounds in their super middleweight affair, having survived a first-round knockdown to produce what remains a leading candidate for 2021 Knockout of the Year.

Rosado has eyed a fight with Munguia ever since coming up just short in an unpopular twelve-round, split decision in favor of former middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs last November 27 in Hollywood, Florida. The fight is one that has piqued the interest of Munguia’s co-promoters, Zanfer Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Both boxers are certainly on board for the affair as well.

“In talks with Golden Boy to make this epic fight happen in the fall,” Rosado confirmed. “The people want it. It’s time to deliver!”

“Let’s make it happen,” Munguia noted Wednesday via social media, the short-and-sweet message accompanied by photos of the two boxers face to face following their respective wins in June.

Munguia has stopped his last four opponents, including three straight since moving up to middleweight last January. Prior to the move, Munguia crammed five title defenses in a fourteen-month span after claiming the WBO junior middleweight title in a May 2018 stoppage win over Sadam Ali.

Good scrap this should be.

Rosado did well to bully the bully.

Hopefully they fight before the year is out. :bag:

Not my first choice for Munguia’s next fight but Rosado always comes to fight so it won’t be bad for as long as it lasts.

Another mismatch. Rosado catching stupid bully prospect won't make him a competetive matchup against Mung.

Rosado is underrated and durable.

But he’s the 160lbs equivalent of Dereck Chisora, which means the judges will always award evenly contested rounds to Gabe’s opponent.

I can’t imagine Munguia stopping Rosado, unless it’s towards the end of the fight due to attrition, because the Mexican isn’t a big puncher.

Based on the proverbial eyeball test, it’s been three years since Munguia’s overwhelmed an opponent using his power during the early rounds of a fight.

I’m definitely not suggesting Munguia’s feather-fisted, it's just that I doubt he’s capable of stopping Rosado.

So I expect Munguia to beat Rosado on the judges’ scorecards by a margin that won’t reflect the true competitive nature of the bout.

Jaime Munguia-Gabriel Rosado Middleweight Fight Eyed For Late October

Jaime Munguia fully expects to soon enter the middleweight title picture.

It won’t happen in the immediate future, though also not too far beyond that point.

Despite being named in an ordered WBC title eliminator with Sergey Derevyanchenko, Tijuana’s Munguia (37-0, 30KOs) awaits a fight date with a long-discussed showdown versus Philadelphia’s 'King' Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15KOs). BS.com has learned that plans remain in place to headline a DAZN show in late October, with October 23 mentioned as a possibility.

Representatives from Zanfer Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions—Munguia’s promoters—did not return messages seeking confirmation.

An order from the WBC on August 19 called for Munguia to enter talks with Derevyanchenko, at which time he was already in advanced talks for a showdown with Rosado. Several outlets have recently indicated that Munguia has withdrawn from the title eliminator—which would determine the mandatory challenger to reigning middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo—though the WBC classified such reports as “erroneous.”

Munguia remains the number-one ranked contender for both the WBC and WBO middleweight titles. Derevyanchenko—a three-time title challenger—is ranked number-two by the WBC.

Talks for Munguia-Rosado initially took shape shortly after both appeared and won in separate fights on the same June 19 DAZN card in El Paso, Texas. Munguia—a former WBO junior middleweight titlist—turned away former IBF middleweight title challenger Kamil Szeremeta after six one-sided rounds in the evening’s main event. In the chief support and easily stealing the show, Rosado landed on the favorable end of a candidate for Knockout and Upset of the Year following a sensational, one-punch third round knockout of previously unbeaten Bektemir ‘Bek Bully’ Melikuziev (7-1, 6KOs).

Rosado jumped at the opportunity to appear on the show, having long sought a showdown with Munguia as far back as the moments immediately following his disputed twelve-round, split decision defeat to former middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs last November in Hollywood, Florida. Both Rosado and Munguia previously confirmed that talks were underway for this potential matchup, which now has the finish line in sight.

“In talks with Golden Boy to make this epic fight happen in the fall,” Rosado confirmed earlier this summer. “The people want it. It’s time to deliver!”

“Let’s make it happen,” Munguia replied via social media, the short-and-sweet message accompanied by photos of the two boxers face to face following their respective wins in June.

Munguia has stopped his last four opponents, including three straight since moving up to middleweight last January. Prior to the move, Munguia crammed five title defenses in a fourteen-month span after claiming the WBO junior middleweight title in a May 2018 stoppage win over Sadam Ali.

With a win in October—or whenever the fight ultimately takes place—Munguia will theoretically pursue any path necessary to become a two-division champ. That much has been communicated to the WBC, who remains of the belief that a title eliminator with Derevyanchenko can still be arranged should Munguia prevail.

Press Release

A new chapter will be added to the classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry on Saturday, November 13, as Jaime Munguia (37-0, 30 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico, will put his undefeated record and WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title on the line when he faces off against the Borinquen warrior “King” Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KOs) of Philadelphia, Penn. Fight fans, clamoring for an all-out war between two of the most exciting warriors in the division, will get to see a 12-round ‘Fight of the Year’ contender, live exclusively on DAZN worldwide, excluding Mexico.

Additional information on the event will be announced.

"This fight will be full of non-stop action. It will be a war that fight fans will enjoy and a new exciting chapter in the classic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing rivalry," said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy. "Both fighters are coming off of spectacular performances and knock-out victories that showed their power, speed, and resilience. Jaime Munguia is a super-star; he has all the elements that make a fighter great. He's already conquered the junior middleweight division and is on his way to conquer the middleweight division. But this is going to be a big test for him because Gabriel Rosado is a dangerous fighter, he has never backed down from a challenge. He has faced and gone the distance with some of the toughest fighters in the middleweight division. This is truly a 'Fight of the Year' contender, a fight that fans will remember for years to come."

“As always, Golden Boy continues to deliver world-class matchmaking in what's set to be a brilliant night of boxing in November between Jaime Munguia and Gabriel Rosado,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights at DAZN. “After a clinical performance against Szeremeta in June, Munguia puts it all on the line again, this time against a fan favorite and one of the toughest men in the sport of boxing, Gabriel Rosado. We cannot wait to bring this fight to fans around the world, live exclusively on DAZN.”

“Rosado is a dangerous fighter with a lot of experience,” said Munguia. “He is a formidable rival that we have to prepare to be stronger and more intelligent in the ring. He has had the opportunity to fight with great fighters, the best in the middleweight division. I am going to give this fight 100% and as always, give a great fight for fans on November 13.”

“I'm excited about this fight. It’s a fight in high demand,” said Rosado. “I respect Munguia as a fighter and I will bring my best and I am confident I will be victorious. My last fight I think will end up being ‘Knock-out of the Year,’ and I plan on making this upcoming bout ‘The Fight of the Year.’ Time to make history. Team KGR!!”

Ranked as one of the top middleweights in the world, Jaime Munguia will have a big challenge in facing “King” Gabriel Rosado. One of the most exciting fighters to come out of Tijuana, Mexico, Munguia is a rising boxing super-star in the middleweight division. He has already conquered the junior middleweight division with a former world title and five defenses against Liam “Beefy” Smith, Brandon “Bad Boy” Cook, Takeshi Inoue, Dennis Hogan, and Patrick Allotey. Now, Munguia hopes to continue his undefeated streak as he trains under the tutelage of Hall of Famer Erik “El Terrible” Morales as he continues to climb the ranks and prove he is the best at 160lbs.

“King” Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KOs) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is coming off of a sensational knock-out victory over the former undefeated fighter Bektemir “Bully” Melikuziev. The Philadelphia fighter of Puerto Rican descent has never backed down from a fight and has delivered some of the most memorable battles in the sport, facing some of the toughest fighters in the division. His experience has prepared him for the upcoming test, as he takes on Munguia on November 13 and hopefully claim the WBO Intercontinental Middleweight title.

At some point, these boxers need to be saved from themselves. Let me tell you how this one’s gonna play out. Gabe is gonna do some shoe shining in the first 3 rounds to get the crowd going wild while Munguia does what he normally does, eat each punch like it’s his breakfast. Sure his head may bounce around like Gabe’s doing well but Gabe Rosado can’t hurt this kid. Heck, no one can hurt this kid. I’ve seen this kid take a shallackin’ and smile.

In the end, it’s going to be another Rosado bloodfest. How much more blood do we need to see from Gabe Rosado at this point? He’s had an admirable career but doesn’t he have anyone in his life that loves him even a little? Damn! I like Gabe and I’d be much happier watching him take control of some youngster’s corner. There should be a limit to the damage inflicted on some of these guys.

Munguia seems to be pampered for Canelo.

Rosado, Liam Williams, Maciej Sulecki, Luke Keeler, Juan Macias Montiel, Korobov and Hugo Centeno Jr are the ol' "cannon fodder" for these "young" MW's.

Atm the mw division is pretty weak.

Canelo would very likely already be campaigning as a 175lb-er by the time Jaime Munguia captures one of the world titles at 160lb.

Jaime Munguia and Canelo will never fight each other.

Different weight classes, Alvarez has much bigger fish to fry and I seriously doubt Canelo would willingly face any GBP fighter, unless he was mandated to.

Jaime Munguia and Gabriel Rosado primed to add another chapter to Mexico vs Puerto Rico boxing rivalry

Jaime Munguia and Gabriel Rosado square off in five weeks.

Jaime Munguia and Gabriel Rosado are set for a 12-round middleweight main event on DAZN, coming Saturday, Nov. 13, from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Munguia (37-0, 30 KO) and Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KO) met up, kind of, at a virtual press conference to discuss and promote the fight. The veteran Rosado, 35, is coming off of a big upset win over Bektemir Melikuziev, while the 24-year-old Munguia beat Kamil Szeremta after six rounds, both bouts coming on the same June 19 card in Texas.

Gabriel Rosado

“I think the last couple fights since I actually linked up with Freddie Roach, I think it shows. This is an improved Gabe Rosado. I have experience; I’m putting in the work. Yes, my record is deceiving. I wasn’t the guy with the machine behind me, with the big promoters, big management behind me, so a lot of times, I went into fights where the other guy was the favorite. And there have been fights that should have gone my way, where I got the shit-end of the stick. And it showed in the Danny Jacobs fight. I just saw that fight, and I was like, ‘wow, clearly I out-boxed him.’ But you know, that’s just the beauty of it, that the fans get to see it, and the fans at the end of the day can’t be fooled. I made a statement in my last fight, which I think will be Knockout of the Year. So we’re excited about this Munguia fight.

“I’m excited, but I am not going to give up the game plan, obviously. I want to do a little bit of everything. I’m going to bang, I’m gonna move, I’m gonna box, and I’m going in to win. I’m not just going to win on the scorecards; I want to get a knockout. I want to keep that momentum going because I think it’s important. These are the kinds of fights where it has to live up to the expectations of the fans. So you have to be a hundred percent, and you gotta be willing to be all in, in the ring. It will go down into the history books. This is one of the fights that they’ll be talking about 20 to 30 years from now.

“Bek was a two-time Olympian, I believe, 290 knockouts in the amateurs and was crushing his opponents in the pros. He was a big, strong, powerful guy, so that [win for me] was a statement. Munguia could have gone the easier route. He could have gone with his mandatory, so you have to respect the guy that says, ‘no, I want Rosado.’ He is willing to give the fans what they want, and that’s what makes this fight special, that t’s a fight that the fans asked for. In boxing nowadays, with the politics, it’s hard to give the fans what they want. This right here is just like an early Christmas gift for the fans. It’s gonna be lit.”

Jaime Munguia

“I think he is a good challenge for me. I have always seen him fight great fighters, and so we were really interested when the fight was offered. I think this will be a great fight for all fight fans and a great fight for me.

“Our strategy right now is to focus on working on my general boxing skills. Making sure I keep my distance, keeping my hands up. We noticed that Rosado had an excellent right punch in his last fight, so we want to prepare to prevent him from giving him that advantage. We have been working a lot on my speed and making sure I can move.

“Yes, I won a world title at 24. But also, all these years I have gained a lot of experience. I feel like my boxing has improved, and we are ready for bigger challenges. After Rosado, there has been a lot of talk about a fight with Derevyanchenko, Jacobs, and Golovkin.

“This is going to be a fun night, a night full of punches. It will be a war. Everyone knows that Mexico vs Puerto Rico are always great fights. I honestly see a very motivated Gabe Rosado. He is strong and willing to give a good fight. I can assure you that we will leave everything in the ring and bring something great on fight night.”
