Why are fights stopped on cuts?

I saw someone arguing that Fury should of been stopped by wallin. While i agree he could of and it wouldent of been a wild decision, i can no argue he should have seeing as his eye hasnt been an ongoing problem and he is a world champ now...

that got me thingking, We all know fights can get stopped on cuts, but what is the actual reason?

A) Fear of longterm injury?

B) To make boxing look less barbaric?

C) Hygiene?

D) Limiting vision making people unable to defend themselves?

E) Combo and/or Other...


It often feels like A or D, but i dont know if they are really applicable in many cases.. Had the fury fight been stopped like many agree it could have (would have in other juristictions) these reasons would have been sited, but as we got to see, Fury easily defended himself and won nearly every round, and it hasnt been an ongoing injury problem.... Just wondering why people think cuts stoppages happen.

A and D. Plenty of fights have had pretty gruesome looking cuts but haven’t needed to be stopped. Mostly depends on the location of the cut and the way the blood is flowing.

It's just D - as long as it is in a place that isn't flowing into the fighters eyes or is in danger of having the fighter pass out from loss of blood (as well as the corner being able to contain it), they will let the fight continue - if you ever listened to the great Reg Gutteridge doing the commentary - he would always say 'a bad cut but it isn't affecting his vision, the referee will let it go on'.

Cuts are fine. It’s usually the ones in the eyelids or thereabouts. Depends on size. He well the corner can clean it up etc.

I remember Corrales getting stopped with a cut inside his mouth, in case he swallowed too much blood.

Fights are stopped when cuts occur if the doctor decides the fighter is unable to continue.
This would normally be due to D but I guess fear of long term injury may play a part too.

I'm sure some stoppages are done to protect the record of the 'main guy', be that letting them fight on when it should be stopped or stopping the other guy with something that they could've continued with.

A lot of fights are stopped because of cuts, which sometimes is contentious because the boxer with the cut seems to be doing perfectly well. Refs will probably side with the home boxer for and against cuts , if the opponent is cut the ref will stop it, if it's the home boxer he won't. Example being Hatton vs Thaxton.
Sometimes a cut is saveable but the boxer shows distress prompting the ref to stop it. Another boxer might of just carried on as normal and the ref let it continue.
A good cutman can also help a boxer, the ref trusting them to be able to work on cut, a panicked corner will alert a good ref to the cut being worse than it is.

What about examples such as Deontay's ear (fury) and Colin Jones's nose (curry) ?


I don't know exactly where Deontays blood was coming from but it probably was the most serious in the A category. But the fight was stopped for a combination of reasons at that point.

In the case of Colin jones nose and also Barry Michaels ear (lockridge) excruciating pain doesn't even seem to have a category?
