Jaron Ennis-Thomas Dulorme Fight Set Again; On Showtime Late In October Or In November
Jaron Ennis and Thomas Dulorme have again agreed to meet in a welterweight fight.
Boxing Scene has learned that Ennis and Dulorme will square off in a 12-round bout Showtime will televise late in October or sometime in November. The date of Ennis-Dulorme depends on several factors, which should be sorted out within the next two weeks, but the fight itself is set.
Ennis, 24, and Dulorme, 31, were supposed to headline a Showtime telecast last December 19 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Las Vegas’ Dulorme withdrew from that fight late in November because he tested positive for COVID-19.
Philadelphia’s Ennis instead faced Chris van Heerden, a South African southpaw who took that difficult fight on about 2½ weeks’ notice. Ennis and van Heerden accidentally clashed heads in the first round, though, which caused a nasty gash on van Heerden’s forehead that prohibited him from continuing.
That fight therefore resulted in a no-contest, but Ennis (27-0, 25 KOs, 1 NC) returned to the ring April 10 and dominated Kazakhstan’s Sergey Lipinets. The fast, intelligent, strong Ennis, who is widely viewed as an elite talent, had won each round on the scorecards of all three judges before he knocked out Lipinets (16-2-1, 12 KOs) in the sixth round of a scheduled 12-rounder Showtime aired from Mohegan Sun Arena.
Dulorme lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Eimantas Stanionis on the Ennis-Lipinets undercard. The Puerto Rican veteran fought aggressively against the unbeaten Lithuanian contender and pushed Stanionis despite that he lost a unanimous decision.
Unbeaten Canadian Custio Clayton also was considered as an opponent for Ennis’ next fight. Ottawa’s Clayton (18-0-1, 12 KOs) battled Lipinets to a controversial majority draw in a 12-round fight for the then-vacant IBF welterweight title last October 24 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Ennis’ handlers opted for Dulorme due to his stronger resume and his most recent performance against Stanionis (13-0, 9 KOs, 1 NC). Dulorme (25-5-1, 16 KOs) has lost by TKO twice during his 13-year, 31-fight pro career, though he hasn’t been stopped since undefeated three-division champion Terence Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) beat him by sixth-round TKO in their WBO junior welterweight title fight in April 2015.
Dulorme will try to end a two-fight losing streak when he encounters Ennis. In the bout before Stanionis beat him, Jamal James (27-1, 12 KOs) out-boxed Dulorme in a 12-round fight for the WBA interim welterweight title a year ago at The Armory in Minneapolis, James’ hometown.
