Gary Russell vs. Mark Magsayo | Showtime - January 22, 2022

Where's Gary Russell Jr. and what could be next?

Remind me if you've heard this before: Gary Russell Jr. doesn't have a fight lined up and hasn't competed this year.

The last year Russell fought more than once? 2014. Starting in 2015, he's fought every year, once a year. But so far, he hasn't competed in 2021. There was talk of him fighting Rey Vargas in the spring, but that never materialized.

Despite the inactivity, there's no doubting Russell's immense talent. His only loss came in 2014 to Vasiliy Lomachenko. Since then, he's been dominant, with wins over Joseph Diaz Jr. and, most recently, Tugstsogt Nyambayar.

On Tuesday, the WBC ordered Russell to defend his 126-pound title against Mark Magsayo. The undefeated 26-year-old Magsayo is coming off the biggest win of his career, a brutal KO of Julio Ceja in August, on the undercard of his promoter Manny Pacquiao's loss to Yordenis Ugas. Magsayo, of the Philippines, was dropped in the fifth round but rallied for the win. And with his aggressive, come-forward style, a fight with Russell is a fascinating matchup.

PBC, which handles both Russell and Magsayo, hopes to finalize the fight before the end of the year. Russell, formerly ESPN's No. 1 featherweight, was dropped from the rankings due to inactivity.

Basically yeh.

One fight a year.. one mandatory a year.

It’s enough for him to keep his belt. He’s doing the bare minimum.

When was it he fought Loma?

2015? Bloody hell..

Did Gary actually react when the ring stripped his title from him? Or did he just sit somewhere shrugging and looking Gormless?

He never had the belt. He was just ranked #1.

He just lost his ranking.

It is a shame we do not get more of Gary, a real phenom. He usually fares well against guys like Magsayo, also dominating them.

Source: Gary Russell Jr. to end long layoff vs. Mark Magsayo on Jan. 22

Gary Russell Jr. is ready to end another layoff.

The featherweight champion and Mark Magsayo have struck a deal for a Jan. 22 title fight that will headline a PBC on Showtime event, a source confirmed to ESPN.

Since Russell (31-1, 18 KOs) captured a 126-pound title in March 2015, he has competed once annually with the exception of 2021. The defense against Magsayo will end a career-long 23-month hiatus from the ring.

When he does compete, Russell, 33, is one of the most talented boxers in the world. His blend of speed, power and ring IQ lifted him to the No. 1 spot in ESPN's featherweight rankings before he was removed due to inactivity.

His nearly seven-year title reign at 126 pounds is highlighted by a 2018 decision victory over Joseph Diaz Jr. Russell's first title shot was thwarted by Vasiliy Lomachenko via decision in 2014.

Magsayo (23-0, 16 KOs) will attempt to become the second man to defeat Russell. The 26-year-old Filipino boxer scored a career-best win in August, a brutal 10th-round knockout of Julio Ceja.

Magsayo was floored in Round 5 of that bout, which was featured on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao's farewell fight (Magsayo is promoted by Pacquiao.)

News of the Russell-Magsayo bout was first reported by Boxing Scene.

Petros Ananyan-Subriel Matias Rematch Finalized For January 22 on Russell-Magsayo Card

Subriel Matias has revenge on his mind ahead of his first major title fight.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that terms have been reached for a junior welterweight clash between Puerto Rico’s Matias and Petros Ananyan, an Armenian contender based out of Brooklyn, New York. The fight will serve as part of a January 22 Showtime card from a location to be determined, headlined by long-reigning WBC featherweight titlist Gary Russell Jr. (31-1. 18KOs) in a title defense versus mandatory challenger Mark Magsayo (23-0, 16KOs).

Representatives for Matias and Ananyan both acknowledged an agreement in place for their bout, which is a rematch to their February 2020 meeting. Ananyan emerged victorious, claiming a ten-round, unanimous decision victory over then-unbeaten Matias on the undercard of the WBC heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The bout remains the lone loss to date for Matias (17-1, 17KOs), who has since rebounded with a pair of Showtime-televised knockout wins over unbeaten junior welterweights.

The 29-year-old knockout artist from Fajardo, Puerto Rico—who is managed by Juan Orengo—dealt the first loss to Malik Hawkins in a one-sided stoppage after six rounds last October at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. Matias enjoyed a more competitive fight with Batyrzhan Jukembayev, whom he ultimately stopped after eight furiously paced rounds this past May 29 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Matias-Jukembayev served as part of a four-man box-off ordered by the IBF to determine the next mandatory challenger for its junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, who also holds the lineal/WBA/WBC/WBO belts. Matias is still awaiting word on a final eliminator with Jeremias Ponce (29-0, 19KOs), who scored a tenth-round stoppage of Lewis Ritson in their semifinal eliminator on June 12 in Newcastle, England.

Both have agreed to accept interim bouts while waiting on firm plans either for a final eliminator or for an eventual vacant title fight. The latter would come into play should Taylor (18-0, 13KOs) opt to move up to welterweight following his February 26 title defense versus WBO mandatory challenger Jack Catterall.

There are far easier ways for Matias to remain active than to head straight towards the only fighter to hand him a loss as a pro.

Ananyan (16-2-2, 7KOs)—who is guided by Hall of Fame promoter Lou DiBella—scored a major upset in his win over Matias, having lost two of his previous three outings heading into the bout. The career-best victory to date for the 33-year-old fringe contender was followed up by an entertaining ten-round unanimous decision win over Daniel Gonzalez this past October 16 at Barclays Center in his Brooklyn stomping grounds.

Press Release

WBC Featherweight World Champion Gary Russell Jr. will defend his world title and display his blistering hand speed against top contender and WBC mandatory challenger Mark Magsayo headlining action live on Showtime Saturday, January 22 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, N.J.

The Showtime tripleheader begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and features a 12-round rematch between super lightweight contenders Subriel Matias and Petros Ananyan in the co-main event, plus hard-hitting featherweights Tugstsogt Nyambayar and Vic Pasillas squaring-off in the 10-round telecast opener.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com.

“Gary Russell Jr. has been a force in the featherweight division for years with his dazzling skills and will again defend his title against a hungry and powerful up-and-coming opponent when he duels Mark Magsayo live on Showtime on Saturday, January 22,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Magsayo earned this fight with an impressive 10th-round knockout of Julio Ceja in August and he will be looking to show that he’s the future of the 126-pound division, by knocking off the long-reigning featherweight king in Russell, who has proven worthy of his top spot with his five successful title defenses. Combined with two all-action undercard showdowns, this shapes up to be an electric night of boxing in Atlantic City.”

The Capitol Heights, Md., native Russell (31-1, 18 KOs) has held his WBC Featherweight Title since 2015 when he stopped multiple division champion Jhonny Gonzalez to emphatically capture the belt. The 33-year-old is part of one of boxing’s premier fighting families as he is trained by his father Gary Sr., and stays sharp alongside his younger brothers, unbeaten super lightweight Gary Antuanne and undefeated bantamweight Gary Antonio. Russell owns victories over current featherweight titleholder Kiko Martinez via TKO in 2019 and a unanimous decision over former world champion Joseph Diaz Jr. in 2018. Most recently, Russell outpointed the previously unbeaten Tugstsogt Nyambayar on his way to his fifth title defense in February 2020.

The Filipino sensation Magsayo (23-0, 16 KOs) fights out of Pasig City, Metro Manila and most recently scored a career-best victory in August knocking out former champion Julio Ceja in the 10th round of a fight he trailed on the scorecards. The 26-year-old fights in the U.S. for the sixth time on January 22 as he steps into his first shot at championship gold. Magsayo is trained by Freddie Roach in Southern California and owns 12-round decision victories over Shoto Hayashi and Ramiro Robles, in addition to a sixth-round stoppage of former title challenger Chris Avalos.

Matías (17-1, 17 KOs) will look to avenge his only career loss, which came by narrow decision to Ananyan in 2020, when he enters the ring on January 22. Fighting out of his native Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Matías has rebounded from the defeat to score back-to-back impressive victories on SHOWTIME. He stopped the previously unbeaten Malik Hawkins in October 2020 in the sixth round and forced the previously unbeaten Batyrzhan Jukembayev to quit after eight rounds in their May clash. Matías stopped his first 15 opponents inside of the distance and has still yet to go to a decision in a victory.

The 33-year-old, Ananyan (16-2-2, 7 KOs) made his U.S. debut in December 2019, losing a narrow majority decision against Kareem Martin after defeating Arkadi Harutyunyan in April 2019. Born in Abovyan, Armenia and training in Southern California, Ananyan was unbeaten in his first 15 fights after turning pro in 2015. Ananyan followed up his career-best triumph over Matías by defeating Daniel Gonzalez in October via decision to set up this rematch on January 22.

Nyambayar (12-2, 9 KOs) won a silver medal representing his native Mongolia in the 2012 Olympics and now lives in Southern California, where he’s trained by John Pullman. The 29-year-old ascended the featherweight rankings after his extensive amateur career with victories over then unbeaten Harmonito Dela Torre and former interim champion Oscar Escandon. He earned his first world title shot when he defeated former champion Claudio Marrero in January 2019, before dropping his championship bout against Russell on SHOWTIME. Nyambayar returns to the featherweight division after challenging top 130-pounder Chris Colbert in a July contest he lost by decision.

Pasillas (16-1, 8 KOs), who hails from East Los Angeles, will return to action looking to bounce back from his first career defeat at the hands of Ra’eese Aleem in January on SHOWTIME. Pasillas will move back to featherweight on January 22, where he most recently scored a dominating sixth-round knockout over then-unbeaten Ranfis Encarnacion in September 2020. Pasillas possesses impressive power and was riding a six-fight knockout streak into the bout with Aleem.

True. I’d watch it if Russell wasn’t on it. Yes he “is immensely talented,” but he just does not draw my attention on his own.

When will his peak end?
Has it ended while he has been out of the ring?
I'm going to have a little flutter on Magsayo.
33 is quite old for a little fella who relies on reflex against a bit of a puncher :box:

Gary Russell Jr: My Father Had His Foot Amputated; I’ve Been Somewhat Training Myself

Gary Russell Jr. isn’t seeking sympathy, but the WBC featherweight champion was brutally honest Tuesday about his abnormal training camp for his upcoming title defense against Mark Magsayo.

His father and lifelong head trainer, Gary Russell Sr., had one of his feet amputated last month due to complications from type 2 diabetes. Russell Sr., 62, has trained Russell Jr. and the rest of his sons throughout their amateur and pro careers, but he has been unable to attend most of Russell Jr.’s training sessions in suburban Washington, D.C., for the Magsayo match.

Russell (31-1, 18 KOs) will end nearly a two-year layoff when he makes another mandated defense of his 126-pound championship against the Philippines’ Magsayo (23-0, 16 KOs) on January 22 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Showtime will televise Russell-Magsayo as the main event of a three-bout broadcast from Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.

“Camp has been hectic, man,” Russell Jr. said during a virtual press conference Tuesday. “It’s been a lot going on. You know, pops, pops, he been dealing with amputation. He got his foot amputated. He’s my coach as well as my dad. I’ve been somewhat training myself. And then my father, his health isn’t the best, so he’s getting in the gym as much as possible. But we grinding, man. We ready. No complaints, no whining. We gonna get to it.”

Russell Sr. tried his best to monitor his son’s training sessions on his phone while he was hospitalized in November and December, and more recently from home. He has been able to get to the gym more recently and Russell Jr. expects his father to at least attend his fight a week from Saturday night.

It is likely, though, that Russell Jr.’s younger brothers – bantamweight contender Gary Antonio Russell and junior welterweight prospect Gary Antuanne Russell – will work his corner, along with Rodrigo Mosquera, who regularly works his corner alongside Russell Sr.

“My brothers will definitely work the corner,” Russell Jr. explained. “Rodrigo Mosquera, he’s always been a good guy. He always help work our corner with me as well. My father, he’s a warrior at heart. He’s a warrior at heart. He’s supposed to be going back to the hospital to get checked out. He’s gotta get some stuff done, but he’s decided that he’s not gonna get it done until after the conclusion of this fight. He felt like he missed enough time in the training camp, and he wants to dedicate the rest of whatever he do have to me and to the rest of this camp. You know, I’m grateful for that. It means a lot to me. And once again, we use it all as fuel.”

The 33-year-old Russell Jr., of Capitol Heights, Maryland, will fight for the first time since he out-classed Mongolia’s Tugstsogt Nyambayar (12-2, 9 KOs) in their 12-rounder in February 2020. The left-handed Russell, who has lost only to three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko (16-2, 11 KOs), defeated Nyambayar by unanimous decision at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Gary Russell Jr.

“I use everything going on with me outside of the ring as fuel. It’s been very difficult dealing with the passing of my brother and my dad’s health issues. I tell people all the time that life is like boxing. You have to keep your chin down and hands up. I’m grateful that I’m mentally strong when it comes to stuff like this. This is what champions do, we overcome adversity.

“I’ve been willing to compete against whoever, whenever and wherever. But I can’t force these guys to get in the ring and fight me. I just have to prepare to the best of my ability. I need a dance partner.

“I see him as a good even-handed puncher, maybe he leans a little more to the right hand. He has good punching power, but none of that matters if you can’t hit your target.

“We’re grinding in training camp. No matter what, we’re not going to make any excuses or complaints.

“If I’m going to move up in weight, I want to fight the champion. I’m not planning to move up in weight just to stand in line. I’m fighting Magsayo because he moved up the rankings and earned this spot. Everyone who I’ve competed against has been the next best guy under the champion.

“I don’t have any concerns with Magsayo’s power. You very seldom see me have to come back on the scorecards. Magsayo had to come back in his last fight because he was losing on the cards. That shows some holes in his armor.

“I never overlook anybody. Of course I want the Gervonta Davis fight. But I’m focused on Magsayo. He’s the one who worked his way into this position to fight me. Davis is in no rush, so I’m going to remain focused on a true warrior who’s getting into the ring with me.

“I stay in the gym. Boxing is not just what I do, it’s a lifestyle for me. Even when I’m over and done with my career, I’m still going to be in the gym. I never really blow up and get big in weight. I love what I do and I’m very militant in my mindset.

“No one can really prepare for me. You can’t prepare like you think you can. I know Magsayo will be at his physical and mental best. I take my hat off to him, because he’s willing to put it on the line to prove he’s the best. I wish other fighters would take that same risk.

“A lot of these other guys aren’t willing to step in there with me because of the skillset that I bring. Finally, we have another fighter with some heart who’s willing to fight. I want him to bring his best, so we’ll see whose best is best.”

Mark Magsayo

“I’m very thankful to my whole team for making this fight happen. I’ve been training for three and a half months now, so I’m going to be well prepared for this fight.

“I don’t think Gary has faced anyone since he became champion that has the skills that I have. I’m going to go in there to show him something he’s never seen before and we’ll see how he reacts.
“I learned a lot from the Ceja fight. That gave me a lesson on how to adjust in the middle of a fight. It’s going to help me against Russell.

“I respect Gary Russell Jr., he’s a great champion, but I’m winning this fight on January 22. I want to prove to the people everywhere that I’m the best featherweight in the world.

“I’m going to show the world that I’m the best at this weight. This is the fight that I’ve wanted for a long time. I’ve been waiting patiently for my chance and I’m ready to do my best.

“I’ve had great sparring partners to prepare me for Russell and give me the same looks that he’ll give me on fight night. This is my first world title fight and I’m going to give it my all.

“I’m not trying to be the next Manny Pacquiao, but I’m trying to put my own mark on the history of this sport and for all Filipinos. I’m hungry to prove it all in the ring.

“I’m going to be the stronger fighter against Russell. We trained every day with Freddie Roach and we’ve worked on a lot of different techniques we’ll use in this fight.

“I know he’s going to bring his talent into the ring, but I’m going to show everybody that I can deliver a great fight and become champion.”
