very good career, very good case for being the world #1 at a time, been in the top #3 in the world for most of the last 5 years, 3 belt unified champ
more depth to his record than any other active hw
but ya, he lost twice so he's a sucky failure am i right

Dont think it can be categorised into one of them.
Can probably outbox everyone except usyk and fury. but he is also a very good brawler. problem is he needs to pick a lane and be lighter for boxing and big for brawling. picked the wrong lane today and tired to box a master boxer.

Cause he brawled ruiz and got caught. AJ showed he can easily outbox ruiz. but untill then he had outbrawled everyone so didnt bother... AJ is still a better brawler than ruiz i think, but not by enough that victory is a given.brilo33 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2021, 21:09so why did he lose to ruizgregregegg wrote: ↑25 Sep 2021, 21:08 Dont think it can be categorised into one of them.

I don't think the HW champ should be kissing old ladies on the way to the ring. He's not Hulk Hogan.
I do feel he's lost a bit of aggression and the violent intent he used to have. Hard to say if that can come back because he also seems to be surrounded by a lot of nug-huggers who keep telling him how brilliant he is so they won't be saying that to him.

so aj cant brawl a little fat fella , so why didnt he box on the back foot tonight as that is the only way he can win, sorry for sounding like a pr...ck bit more of a dig at the fighter than you mategregregegg wrote: ↑25 Sep 2021, 21:17Cause he brawled ruiz and got caught. Re: AJ: Career thus far
Its been fairly exciting.
He has got 3 of the 4 belts off champions not vacant.
Moved up fairly fast, didnt take a lot of tomato cans to get to contention.
Hasn't got into major trouble outside the ring
Hasn't pissed hot
Doesn't seem to want to avoid anyone yet.
Avenged a loss.
Took some late opponent changes, one to his detriment. But still never cancelled a big show over it.
Fought fairly regularly.
Actually he's pretty good compared to a lot of other belt holders

Re: AJ: Career thus far
As I said, I don’t think aj can outbox usyk or fury. As I also said, I think most of the time AJ beats Ruiz in a brawl, but not all the time, so he played it safe and boxed him because that has a higher win percent for him in that fight.brilo33 wrote: ↑25 Sep 2021, 21:24so aj cant brawl a little fat fella , so why didnt he box on the back foot tonight as that is the only way he can win, sorry for sounding like a pr...ck bit more of a dig at the fighter than you mategregregegg wrote: ↑25 Sep 2021, 21:17Cause he brawled ruiz and got caught. Re: AJ: Career thus far
Career of two halves for me. Povetkin should've been Fury towards the end of 2018, with Joshua coming off a solid run against Klitschko, Takam and Parker. He seemed to lose his aggressive edge in the Parker fight (sensibly), coasted a little against Povetkin, and then when it returned against a fat lad he thought he could blast out...
So I think he was really good (with his obvious faults) up until Ruiz wrecked his confidence, and would've given Fury a fight around the time he had to settle for Parker and Povetkin, his motivation clearly not as high for those guys.

Re: AJ: Career thus far
Just not a natural, so overachieved and a product of his era. You didnt hear the true fighters e.g. Floyd talk about "still learning" and game plans when you are an experienced world champion in his 30s.
In terms of boxing he is really more Frank Bruno or Audley Harrison than a true fighter. He sometimes talk about his camp like he is a novice....But then it's really only Fury out of the legitimate heavyweights who is a true boxing fighter.
I really think Usyk, Gassiev and even Breidis would beat any heavyweight except Fury and I would make Usyk the favourite vs Fury.

Re: AJ: Career thus far
the size difference between the average hw and cruiser isnt as great as people think, a lot of career hws could make cruiser or get close if they lost the flab and dehydrated some weight before the fight
obviously guys like aj, fury, etc are natural shws. but how much bigger is a guy like joe parker or whyte really compared to usyk? even at their lower weights these guys have absolutely no definition to be seen

Re: AJ: Career thus far
Personally I think AJ is gun shy. I have never been hit by a 20 stone bloke right on the chin and fallen like a sack of spuds but I'm guessing it's not a pleasant experience. AJ has been rocked by a few opponents and hit the deck a few times as well. I just think it can't be a very nice experience being knocked unconscious and after the effect one is going to be wary of it happening again.
I think AJ has that experience planted in his brain and it's effected him and how he fights.
Prior to Ruiz AJ had a go and did well but in the Ruiz rematch he stood off and tried to box his way to a win, he was caught by Ruiz a few times and I don't think he's the perfect dance boxer like an Ali for example who could hit and move with ease.
If he fought Fury the same would happen he would try to keep it at distance rather than have a brawl.
AJs rep has been found out.
In this era AJ has been ok but not a patch on heavyweights in the 90s. He's just another boxer muscled up to the max.

Out of the available options, it is the first one for me. Not sure history will be too kind to his CV, as if you wanted to be particularly hard-headed about it, you could say that he lost against the first genuinely world level operator he fought that was in his prime. Not sure why he and his team thought he'd outbox a boxer last night either, crazy tactics.

I imagine people would point to Usyk and then use Ruiz to further pick the CV apart.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 02:20that usyk or ruiz?jtourettes wrote: ↑26 Sep 2021, 02:19 Out of the available options, it is the first one for me. One thing I noticed was him being
Way to nice in the build up to
The fight and I don’t remember him
being like that before.

Re: AJ: Career thus far
He has had a great career and has been very very lucky - not because he never had world class talent but he did but because a lot of things went his way (starting with the Olympic gold medal...).
He is rich beyond his wildest dreams, got to the top of his sport (as an amateur and pro) still young, still healthy, has been looked after and had his interests in and out of the ring looked after - and he lost two fights but the vast majority of boxers who carry on in world class company will have that happen to them.
There's no shame in his losing to Uysk.

He's a polite guy, he isn't a trash talker - even when Dillian Whyte was trying it on, he didn't rise to the bait in the way Chisora did.
