As long as Callum Smith does as well. And everyone else who won a fight yesterday while under the Bridgerweight limit.

I’ve always thought this and totally agree with you Maggie. If you consider that there’s lightweights walking around 20 pound heavier than they fight at then it’s not a stretch to think a 220 heavy with visible body fat could lose 20 pounds.

The reasons WHY they stay at heavy are fairly obvious
ya exactly, you have guys like jaime munguia who enter the ring 20 pounds heavier than they weigh in, presumably bigger guys could do bigger cuts too as 20 pounds is smaller percentage of their weight

get a guy who usually fights at say 230 but carries a bit of extra weight, have him work that off like he's got a limit to make and get to about 220-215, then do a cut. it's hardly outlandish and there are big cruisers doing cuts too.

but you have people thinking that a rolly polly 245 career hw is somehow naturally that big, whereas the cruiser moving up is a natural wee 200 pounds

I guess the question is does cutting weight make a HW better? As others have said Fury is flabby, the lightest he's ever weighed was 245lb. If he went all out and got down to say 225lb would he be a better fighter, I don't think so. All these muscular fighters obviously aren't naturally that size and if they stopped training they would lose mass.

What made Marciano such a machine was he trained down to 185lb. He could've no doubt weighed in over 200lbs if he chose to but then his fitness and stamina would've been affected. But Fury is a fighter who uses he size well and Marciano was a fighter who relied on fitness and conditioning.

you almost never see such prolific fat in any other sport that requires endurance. heavyweight divisions in combat sports seems to be the exception, and of course the guys who actually have limits to make are ripped

if you take a look at records you'll also notice a lot of the flabby guys used to be much lighter, only to balloon over time. they werent merely born that way
Everyone has a different baseline.

Fury is flabby naturally . Getting fury looking like AJ would be near impossible and detrimental. His baseline is fat, when he is in shape he is flabby. When he stopped training he became a 400lb coke addict somthing that is nearly impossible for most.

Ruiz is flabby, people say if Ruiz was in shape he would be a middle weight, but Ruiz is in shape at 250 lb, it’s just his in shape isn’t “abs”.

Wilder is skinny naturally.

Parker is medium.

Some are just lazy sure, and these guys spend some time out of shape, but they are top 10 guys getting millions, they are in shape.
Ruiz is a fat undisciplined pig, who clearly has a terrible diet.
that statment is true for 280lb ruiz. but is not for 250-260ish lb ruiz. he looks fat sure, but if you think someone going 12 hard rounds with parker and arguably winning is unfit then your mental.

Do you genuinly thnk ruizs skills and natral atributes are so fornicating amazing that he made it to 3 belt champ, and 7 figure pay days without ever being fit?

So are you saying he's better at 260 compared to 220? Somehow 40 lbs of fat is good for him?

It's my opinion that all these fat guys would be better if they lost weight. And naturally flabby isn't a thing, they're fat because they eat too much and if they changed their diet they'd lose weight.

That's not the point, though, the question is how many heavyweights could get down to cruiserweight if they wanted to; nobody is claiming it would make them better fighters to lose the weight.
I do, fat boxer would be better fighters if they lost the fat.

Gotta figure most HW"s could lose 5 - 10 % (some way higher) of their weight if they properly diet and train.

I’m saying 250 lb Ruiz is way better than 220 lb ruiz. People have this “athletes have to be ripped” myth in there mind from unknowingly seeing crazy steroid abuse, and watching WWE when they were a kid.

Some people should be ripped to be peak heavyweight condition, others should not.

It's not a matter of properly dieting and training for fighting, of course, it is if they properly diet and train for weight cutting as well as fighting. Even the fittest heavyweight doesn't bother doing this - why would they?

https://immaf.org/2020/10/29/how-severe ... ng-in-mma/

The table in this gives the average weight cut in boxing as 5.3kg, (about 11 pounds), with 15 pounds being not uncommon and 25 being possible. For MMA this is a norm of 20 and 35 (!) at the outside.

We can assume from this that pretty much any fighter who weighs in around 225, even if they are not in any way overweight to their detriment , could make 200 if they really wanted to.

Which is of course one reason there aren't many heavyweights weighing in under this - it's not so much that they can't compete but that a lot of the guys who naturally fall into that range are cutting and fighting cruiserweight, while the ones who can't get down to cruiser don't bother to cut, leaving an inevitable sparely populated gap between 200 and 225 or so.

Sorry, but that's bollocks, it flies in the face of basic physiology, that 30 lbs of blubber aids athletic performance.

In Ruiz' case it's not about being ripped, it's about not carrying 30-40 lbs of excess fat around the ring. Ruiz isn't naturally 250 lbs, he's hog fat. How do you figure 30 lbs of fat is a benefit for him in the ring?

It just mean you dont understand the physiology of being a fornicating unit.

The way you see it Ruiz, who isnt a particularly good boxer, is actualy a light heavyweight carring an 50lb packpack of fat while he fights and who has arguably won the heavyweight title twice (bit of hometown decision in NZ some say). against guys far bigger, far longer and more skilled.... thats more a stretch dont you think?

Kow and arreola are a couple of fat boiz, they have the record for most punches thrown in a heavyweight fight.... you think two grossly out of shape people can stand and bang for for 36 mins dishing out over 1100 punches?

for some people to lose the fat means they just dont have the calories to get through training and so cant e fit. everyones diffent surely you have realised this by now.

Ruiz could dedicate every waking moment to training he isnt looking like AJ. AJ could hang on the couch eating KFC he wouldent look like ruiz.

Not saying you're wrong about Ruiz, but anecdotally I've got a bit fat during the past year, and my arm and leg muscles have actually grown, and that's with working out less often. Purely from the increased effort of hoisting additional bodyweight around, carried all over in a way that's hard to target as comprehensively with weights. If I did neck bridges I might see a bit of improvement there, for example.

That said, my running speed's gone down the toilet, so there's no way I'd train for a fight like this! Fingers crossed Covid doesn't ramp up too much over winter and we're all back to normal in spring.

It absolutely does not mean that they "don't have the calories to get through training", fat people have a huge calorie surplus. It is entirely possible to lose weight and still gain strength while training hard, especially if you're fat to begin with. Even cyclists, who are scraped as hell, go through dietary regimes to lose weight while still maintaining stamina and cardio conditioning.

He might never look like AJ, but he wouldn't look like a big fat wobbly fcuk like he does now,

Ruiz has very good hands, and no mean amount of boxing ability, but he is overweight, and would benefit from eating a better diet. He must be fit, but he must eat enormous amounts of calories, and I'd bet a pound to a penny, he eats real shite too, to get that fat whilst training.
