Thoughts about Sergey Kovalev?

Post by Enlightened-One »

I was wondering about Sergey Kovalev and whether we’d ever see him compete again (at world-level).

He was once a fighter I respected (for his pugilistic ability), but he constantly seems to keep making huge mistakes outside the ring:

• Was heavily criticised for his racist remarks and social media posts.

• He pleaded guilty to punching a woman and kicking her dog.

• Caused a disturbance on a plane and had to be removed before the flight took off.

• Arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

• Illegally streamed the Canelo-Smith bout via Instagram.

• Tested positive for PED’s.

Do you still like the guy and believe he’s capable of making a successful comeback or do you feel he’s a lost cause?

Thoughts?

I think, that Kovalev has established himself as P4P #2 in hurting EO's butt. Only Golovkin is ahead, can you imagine this? That's quite impressive.

The guy is a huge piece of sh*t with low self-control. Perhaps one could cut him some slack for surely Kov battles inner demons daily over Roman Simakov's death?

He is one of my favorite fighters of all time, a man against the odds. He is not as good as Roberto Duran of course, but he reminded me of a Slavic Roberto Duran, Great fighter great courage and balls ...

Yet he is at least 37 or 38 now, so what ever form of him we see from now on he will be well past his prime, what ever it is he gave the fans a hell of ride, and I still think he beat Ward in the first fight..

He also, with some justification, probably feels he should have been P4P number 1 after a win over Andre Ward where he fought absolutely the best he could ever fight and after not getting the decision just kind of... Gave up. There must have always been that feeling in the back of his head that there was nothing he could really do any better.

He's probably got CTE too. That would help explain his increasingly stupid antisocial behaviour.

At his peak he was one of the most exciting fighters out there and one of my favourites. I think it's sad how he's ended up.

The fight could have gone either way, hardly a robbery. Having said that I too gave him a couple of swing rounds and had it 115-112 for Kovalev.

Yeah. The self-destructive behavior is likely only going to get worse. Look up alcohol-related deaths in Russia, about 1 in 3 deaths are attributable to Vodka.

Canelito should rip his head off and than eat it.

Kovalev is a trash person.

Who would kick a dog?

Only some dumb mofo.

Actually, it is second Ward fight i have problem with, not the first. But what ive liked about Kovalev is how he bounced back from Eleider Alvarez loss. Kovalev is hated by fans and everybody wanted him to lose rematch. He schooled Alvarez and took Anthony Yarde fight , young, strong powerful, undefeated HW looking fighter and just beat him. Sergey was real deal and haters hate it

Classic example of an awesome fighter with jaw dropping power who stayed in the game too long.
I worry about his health now, and would be happy if he called it a day.
His out of the ring episodes concerns me.
Hopefully he retires and stays happy and healthy. I've watch some terrific fights he's been in, massive knockouts, he was a truly formidable opponent.

Got robbed in the first Ward fight. Or at least he allowed Ward back into a contest he should have won easily. Never the same after.

Eddie should put Buatsi in with him. By this point i think Kov is too faded, fun little oppertunity to say your better than Yarde (not that its in doubt right now).

Can't help but feel this thread was created to bash Kovalev, but we've had some good positive comments.

It was created exactly for that. The most funny thing is the fact, that Kovalev continues inflame EO even when he has become irrelevant.

At one point Kovalev was among the hottest fighters in the sport, but whatever happened to him in between Ward 1 and Ward 2 was his downfall at the top, he just wasn't the same man.
Good run while it lasted and I'm really glad I got to see him live when he was hot in the Ward 1 fight.
As for the list of misdemeanors namely "was heavily criticised for his racist remarks and social media posts", I take it with a pinch of salt as there have been plenty of boxers that have done exactly the same if not worse but get a pass.
In fact people that bring this up could be seen as racist themselves, they're singling out Kovalev when Tyson, Hopkins and Joshua among many others have said pretty much the same thing.
Are Tyson, Hopkins and Joshua classed as racist ?
No they're not are they, however by the standards society sets for everybody else they should be.

AJ arguably received more criticism via social media for his racist remarks (in that poem he read) than Krusher did for his similarly unacceptable remarks.

And I feel that Bernard Hopkins was aggressively ridiculed for his “white boy” remarks.

I honestly can’t recall Mike Tyson’s racist remarks, but he was pretty much condemned for admitting to beating up Robin Givens, and for also being a convicted rapist. He was once one of the most despised famous people on the planet.

That said, it’s unfortunate that for those classed as millennials or generation z, the definition of racism has changed, due to their far-left political ideology, where they seriously believe that black people can’t be racist.

Here’s how I define the term racism (the old-school meaning of the word):

“Racism is when someone is discriminated against (singled out) because of their race, the colour of their skin, their nationality, their accent or first language, or their ethnic or national origin. Racism is a hate crime and is illegal.”

And this is the so-called “modern” far-left definition of the same word:

“Racism presupposes the ability to control a significant segment of the population economically, politically and socially by imposing law, covenant and restrictions on their lives. Black people had (or have) no capacity to do that. They can be bigoted or prejudiced, but not racist.”

Therefore, according to the modern interpretation, certain demographics can get away with saying offensive things that others can’t! It's unfair, but the media supports this stance, which means eventually, everyone will start using the new definition.

Anyway, this doesn’t mean that Sergey Kovalev should be given a free pass for his racist conduct, because that’s simply moronic!

Put it this way, I repeatedly quoted Krusher’s racist behaviour, because I thought it was a noteworthy recent development, and the moderators immediately removed my posts. And I was then accused of being racist by others, just for quoting Sergey’s words verbatim.

Good fighter, I liked him a lot, shame the Adonis fight never happened but I had no complaints about both Ward fights, in terms of his behaviour outside the ring, if I only watched well behaved fighters then it’d be pointless following the sport!
