Somebody forgot to tell that to Joe Frazier.
Was tysons power overrated?
tyson was the first and only man to ever knock out thomas . thomas had a granite chin.Terence wrote:If you stood in front of Mike clearly cowed then off-course he'd take your head off. You must be mistaken. Pinklon Thomas was stopped five times. Maybe you were speaking of Larry Holmes?shyguy wrote:tyson was the first and only man to ever knock out thomas . thomas had a granite chin.Terence wrote:If you stood in front of Mike clearly cowed then off-course he'd take your head off. Tyson's power is overrated, without a doubt. He was KOing subpar opposition on his way to the title and then used his mythical aura of invincibility to scare his opponents sh*tless before the bell even rang. When Tyson's aura disappeared, so did some of the effectiveness of his punching.
Yes, Tyson had great power, but he was far from the best puncher in the heavyweight division's history as some like to make him out to be.

Yes, but the others were AFTER he was KOd by Tyson. Clearly, Tyson RUINED Pinky.evndrbsn wrote:You must be mistaken. OK, I don’t believe that either, but I couldn’t control myself. Someone else was going to say it anyway and I just wanted to say it first. 8)
thomas was stopped on his feet by other opponents but tyson is the only guy to put thomas on the deck .evndrbsn wrote:You must be mistaken. Pinklon Thomas was stopped five times. Some people say that tyson has the world-record in punching-power. I do not know if it is true. But i know that tyson is one of the best punchers that ever lived!
Just watch his fights. Before he became Champion he destroyed his opponents in a way i have never seen:
some examples:
Johnson: He said:"Shit , I cant bealeave this power. Its like getting hit by train.Thats the closest I have come to dying!!!" Tyson broke the Jaw of Johnson and lost some teeth!
Hosea: Hosea lied on the floor and cried laudly. 15 minutes later he said ( still shocked) :"I was punched by a sledgehammer! This motherfucker punches like a sledgehammer!"
Richardson: Did you ever get hit so hard? "Yes , one year ago , when I was hit by a lorry!
Frazier: Tyson destroyed him in 30 seconds. The referee said after this fights that he has never seen a fighter with such a punchingpower!
Scaff: Tyson broke his nose and blood came from it.
Young: This is THE MST UNBEALEVEBLE knockout I have ever seen. Tyson hit him so hard that he flew through the ring and Young flew against the ropes and from there to the floor.
And when Tyson was Champion there were no difference. Just watch how hard Tyson hit Berbick ( TV-Commentator: Berbick has never been hit THAT hard against any other fighter) . Tyson was the only man , who knocked Homes out. Holmes once said that Tyson had nuclear-energie in his hands. Look at the brutal punch against Tubbs. Tubbs was asked which punch of tyson was the hardest. He said: That with the baseball-basher. Michael Spinks was never down in his carrear , although he fought very good punchers like Holmes and Cooney. Tyson destroyed him perfectly!! Spinks said that he was never hit that hard before. Bruno also siad that Tyson has nuclear-energie in both hands. And just watch the KOs against Botha, Etienne or Tilmann for example. Tyson is the best puncher ever!

What Ribalta told me was that Tyson was not as hard a puncher as a constant, precision puncher.
Ribalta sparred with Cooney and said Jerry had more power than Tyson. Of all the fighters he faced, Ribalta said the hardest hitter was Bone Crusher.
Before someone goes nuts, the statement does not imply that Tyson is not a hard banger -he is- but rather than his power being smashing, solid strength, it is derived from good aim and consistent followup.
ANY heavyweight has power.

I agree that Tyson was a revelation. He KO'd these guys with relative ease. The accuracy of his punching was unnerving.BrocktonBlockbuster49 wrote:was tony tubbs or pinklon thomas ever knocked out before fighting tyson? seeing the way tyson knocked them both out with ease shows u how much power and snap he had in his punches.
those 1980s heavyweights, a lot of them lost but few were ever dominated or knocked out before. then tyson came along and flattened them all with ease. he was knocking out guys who were never close to be stopped before. he was doing it with ease too.

Tyson was not a one shot knockout artist in the traditional sense, so I would say he was not as heavy handed as the likes of George Foreman & Earnie Shavers, but he was a lot more dangerous because of his speed & accuracy.
Larry Holmes summed it up perfectly, when he said, "Being hit by Tyson was like being hit by a Corvette. Being hit by Shavers was like being hit by a truck!"

interesting that ribalta reckons that smith hit harder than cooney because holmes reckons that cooney hit way harder than smith . What a fighter reckons who hit them hardest means jack shit . Its just their opinion.enrique wrote:What Ribalta told me was that Tyson was not as hard a puncher as a constant, precision puncher.

Didn't Tyson knock Botha out with one punch and the Buster Douglas knock down (or KO whatever you want to call it) also happned on one punch.Tyson was not a one shot knockout artist in the traditional sense, so I would say he was not as heavy handed as the likes of George Foreman & Earnie Shavers, but he was a lot more dangerous because of his speed & accuracy.
Tyson had extreme punching power maybe not like Foreman or Shavers but he could knock guys out with one punch you can't argue with that cuz if he hit them clean they would fall.

It was only a very short Joe Louis type punch too.

If a fighters opinion doesn't matter if he was the one who got hit than who's opinion does, Bert Sugar's?shyguy wrote:interesting that ribalta reckons that smith hit harder than cooney because holmes reckons that cooney hit way harder than smith . Oh yeah, DK tried to make it sound like the ref cheated Tyson out of a KO. That was pretty funny.Thunder and Lightning wrote:Yes he did but some of the diehard Tyson fans think that it was a long count thus the "whatever you like to call it" partThe Great John L wrote:KO? Tyson was a brutal puncher...no doubt one of the hardest in history as evidence clearly shows. His power was a combination of strength, leverage and tremendous speed that he generated. When he landed solidly it shocked his opponent and he was so fast that if the first shot didn't put his man down, then the second, or third would. He had one punch knockout ability in either hand!
As to the Douglas "long count" that's the claim of King and others, but there was not really a lot to it...Douglas kicked Tyson's ass that night and did it well.

I've never heard of a world record by Tyson, or anyone else. There was a show on TLC, or the Discovery channell recently about "Fighters Skills, or Fighters Power." I meant to watch it, but forgot when it was on, but they were supposed to show various measurements of punching, which I don't know if they had any famous boxers taking part in the event.
