Hyland had stopped Billy Hardy in the amateurs but Hardy destroyed him in the pros.

I was looking at Dudley McKenzie's amateur record yesterday. Dudley, a southpaw and the brother of Duke and Clinton, won four national schoolboy titles, two junior ABA titles and two NABC titles. He was one NABC title away from the full set as a schoolboy and junior and stands shoulder to shoulder with George Collins, who also failed to win a third NABC title when he was bombed out by Gary Stretch. Errol Christie did get the full set, of course, including an ABA senior title at the first attempt in 1981. (McKenzie and Collins didn't win an ABA senior title.)
Dudley turned pro with Gary Davidson and racked up five or six straight wins but was then outscored by James Cook and never boxed again.

maybe it was easier to make money being the losing side. maybe his personal life was a mess or something, but something defo is funky there. obviously the ams aint the pros, but you have to have some notable ability to achieve what he did - i notice he also won euro bronze and had other decent results internationally

that takes much more ability than you'd expect from a guy losing to 4-15, 0-1, type of pro opponents. the other guys usually mentioned in these threads underperformed, but generally had winning records or showed some quality in losses. not this guy

Yeah, I was also confused by his record. It's not like he started out on the A side and decided to become a journeyman, he started out bad and mostly stayed that way.

I notice he got stopped a lot - maybe the amateur game suited a weak chin?

I get that but the fact he's beating quality like Russo and winning the Abas shows he has ability and can fight. He would have been fighting top amateurs.

I remember people talking about Szucs in the amateurs saying how he was absolutely brutal and ruthless to the body. It is such a polar opposite in terms of levels of opposition and performances that I’d say it’s more likely that Boxrec have mixed up two different Istvans Szucs as the same person.

Also there is a gap between being amateur and turning pro.

Danny Price was very good but I think he struggled getting fights and with injuries. 2 aba titles and a win over Bellew.

Clay Hodges... the man defeated George Foreman in the amateurs three times, but basically went nowhere as a professional. Many years later he would play Jess Willard in the movie Dempsey. Ironically as a professional he did win a decision over Jimmy Young even though it was basically Young's third fight as a pro.

Ever want to stump people with a boxing trivia question ask them if they can name a heavyweight who beat both George Foreman and Jimmy Young who was also an actor.
