BBBofC orders Ted Cheeseman vs Troy Williamson and Anthony Fowler vs Sam Eggington

The British Boxing Board of Control has released the latest update on its suite of champions, which includes an intriguing development at super welterweight. They have ordered champion Ted Cheeseman to face Troy Williamson, who won an eliminator earlier this year, and contenders Anthony Fowler and Sam Eggington to face off in a new final eliminator.

All sides have until July 14th to hash things out and avoid a purse bid.

Cheeseman (17-2-1, 10 KO) knocked out Asinia Byfield for the belt in 2018, defended it with a split draw against Kieron Conway, then lost it to Scott Fitzgerald. After getting back on track by beating the aforementioned Eggington (30-7, 18 KO), he out-slugged James Metcalf in March to reclaim the now-vacant title.

Williamson (16-0-1, 12 KO) punched his ticket to a British title fight by stopping Kieran Smith in April. Seven of his last eight wins have come inside the distance, with only Harry Scarff managing to see the judges.

Though he hasn’t managed to secure a rematch with Fitzgerald, Fowler (14-1, 11 KO) has won five straight since that 2019 split decision defeat, while Eggington is 6-1 since a noteworthy loss of his own to Liam Smith. Both have already scored wins this year, Fowler over Jorge Fortea in March and Eggington over Carlos Molina in May.

Both of these figure to be a lot of fun, so let’s hoping they come together.

Strange the way some boxers have demands put on them to defend the British title, such as an active boxer like Cheeseman who's compiling a "who's who" of the British light middles on his record, and others get a free rein to do as they please

Press Release

Ted Cheeseman hopes to push on from domestic level should he successfully defend his British Super-Welterweight Title against Darlington’s Troy Williamson on the stacked Liam Smith vs. Anthony Fowler card at the M&S Bank Arena Liverpool a week on Saturday, live worldwide on DAZN.

Cheeseman (17-2-1, 10 KOs) recaptured the 154lbs Lord Lonsdale Challenge Belt with a brilliant eleventh round knockout of the previously unbeaten Liverpudlian James Metcalf on the blockbuster Alexander Povetkin vs. Dillian Whyte II show in Gibraltar earlier this year.

‘The Big Cheese’ suffered his first career loss when he stepped up to European level to challenge Spain’s Sergio Garcia at The O2 back in February 2019, but with his personal issues now behind him the 26-year-old Bermondsey favourite is confident that he can mount a fresh assault at European honours and beyond.

“Before I had my demons I hit a point where as a young pro you think you’re unbeatable,” said Cheeseman. “You have that glow and that feel around yourself. I feel like for a while I had a lot of pressure on me. I was putting more pressure on myself because I wanted to prove everyone wrong. Now I feel like I’ve got that relaxed happiness and confidence back. I know that as long as I perform I should deal with Troy Williamson.

“You always get a test. You either shine or you fail. I hope he fails, but you never know. I believe that I’m ready for whatever he brings. There isn’t any bad blood between us. We’re both good fighters and we both know what we want to do and where we want to go. It’s about giving ourselves the best opportunity of doing that. I’m in unbelievable shape both mentally and physically.

“I can’t look past this fight, but I feel like this is the last hurdle for me at this level. As long as I’m successful on October 9 then I’ll push on, roll the dice and see where I can get to. I believe that I have the ability to get him out of there in the twelve rounds. Whether it’s points or a stoppage it doesn’t matter, as long as I get the win.

“This is my last hurdle at British level. I’m very motivated for this fight. Troy is a good fighter. Obviously he hasn’t had any tests like me. I don’t think he’s had a proper gut check yet, but he’s unbeaten and he doesn’t want to lose his unbeaten record. He’s a tough fighter and he can bang a bit. It’s a good test but I believe my experience will count in the end.”

Cheeseman vs. Williamson is part of a stacked night of action in Liverpool, former WBO Super-Welterweight Word Champion Liam Smith (29-3-1, 16 KOs) meets 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and Rio 2016 Olympian Anthony Fowler (15-1, 12 KOs) in a massive all-Liverpool clash for local bragging rights, WBA Bantamweight World Champion Shannon Courtenay (7-1, 3 KOs) defends her crown for the first time against the USA’s Jamie Mitchell (6-0-2, 4 KOs), Northampton’s Kieron Conway (16-2-1, 3 KOs) looks to bounce back from his loss to Souleymane Cissokho on the Canelo vs. Saunders undercard when he meets James Metcalf (21-1, 13 KOs), decorated amateur star Peter McGrail makes his highly anticipated professional debut, Tony Bellew-managed Lightweight Luke Willis (10-0, 1 KO) clashes with Norwich’s Rylan Charlton (6-1-1, 3 KOs), two-time World Title challenger Natasha Jonas (9-2-1, 7 KOs) returns after her thrilling fight with Katie Taylor in May, Birmingham Heavyweight hope Solomon Dacres (2-0, 1 KO) steps up against the experienced Kamil Sokolowski (10-22-2, 4 KOs) in just his third fight, Wigan Lightweight Rhiannon Dixon (3-0) takes on Anaelle Angerville (1-1-1) over four rounds and Blane Hyland (4-1) meets Santiago San Eusebio (3-1-2, 2 KOs) in a four round Super-Flyweight contest.

Cracker of a fight this, both fighters coming off big KOs ,Cheeseman icing Metcalf and Williamson battering Smith, it's a proper step up to British level, Cheeseman the hardest bastard around domestically, been there and done it against good opposition, he's been where Williamson hasn't, i think he can stop Williamson in the late rounds

Cracking fcuken fight this one is - I worry about Ted taking all this stick back to back, but it’s down to his Team I guess. Troy hits like a truck - I fancy him to win by late KO, whilst behind on the cards.

That's how I see it too.
But Ted is one tough bugger. Maybe T/KO.
I thought Scott Fitzgerald was going to stop him, he gave it a bloody good go, and man, Ted's face was hard to look at after that.
Ted Cheeseman is what he is, and that definitely isn't boring. :box:

I am looking forward to a bit less of that actually . Let's be fair, both have improved and I expect them to have improved further. Ted has been showing better head movement, unfortunately a lot of that has been while he was out of range. But you can tell it is being worked on.
I'm optimistic that Cheeseman has been upping his game, laid rest to his demons, and will show us gradual improvement whilst being one of Englands most entertaining fighters :box:

Yeah great fight. :box:
Hard to call - I think Troy has a higher ceiling, but not sure he’s ready and Ted is just so manly and proven.
He may have improved a fair bit too.

Troy isn’t a guy you look at and think he’s obviously going way further than Ted, so I’m picking The Big Cheese on experience.

I think I agree with you. It’s a tough one to call! I didn’t particularly rate Smith who Troy walked through in his last fight but his ceiling may be higher. Also with Ted’s style, the volume of punches he’s taken may catch up with him at some point. Who knows. Great fight and I’m looking forward to 3 well matched light middleweight fights whilst all of them have entertaining styles.

going the cheese points. williamson has power makes him very live and get him out of trouble and is improving so he is very capable , somthers his work a lot gets hit a lot inside which i assume this fight will be fought also he is usaly the one that brings it on the front foot lunging at his opponent but cheese is a very come forward fighter and i can see him pushing williamson back , ted has had a load of wars so you dont know whats on his clock i reckon he has enough still

Bold choice. The way these guys fight I would not expect it to go all the way, especially over 12. Williamson carrys power, and Cheeseman gives it everything. I just can't see anything other than a full on battle of attrition :bag:

Cracking fight ! Congratulations to Williamson, he really rose to the occasion.

Cheeseman had his moments, but his leaky defence really cost him this time.

Teddy went out on his shield and I wouldn't expect anything less from someone with a heart the size of his :salut:

p.s. that slippy ring canvas was an 'effing joke :witzend:

I think Eddie should match Cheese or Fowler for the Euro v Kerman.

First he should start spreading rumours that they are gone and are looking for a retirement payday.

Kerman is gone and chinny and they are matching him very carefully, both Brits could win that.

As much as I support Cheeseman, I think Fowler should be pushed forward for the EBU crack.

Anthony suffered less in defeat and could bounce back better for the experience. There's no shame losing to Liam Smith and Fowler looked as good as I'd seem him at times.

Ted could really do with regrouping with some less demanding opposition for a few fights and then see if he could make a move again.
