I always wanted to see Herbie Hide vs Jeremy Williams. They were of a simular size, both could punch and both could be KO'd. It could have produced some early fireworks.

Years ago when Roy Jones Jr first started talking about moving up to Heavyweight and taking on the likes of Holyfield, Tyson and Douglas I recall Hide throwing his name into the hat as he felt his combination of speed and power would have been too much for Jones Jr.
Hide would have starched Jones Jr.

RJj would have been quick enough to run away from Hide, but he wouldn't have had the power to trouble him at heavyweight.

lol. Personally I couldn't see Herbie stoically taking repeated power shots for 12 rounds and fighting back...

You have to ask yourself, would Herbie have beaten Ruiz? Could he have coped with the pressure, the roughhousing, the fact that ruiz wouldn't just fold when hit? Herbie never demonstrated that he was capable of beating a top 10 heavyweight.

Herbie never really demonstrated he was capable of beating a top ten domestic heavyweight in all honesty. Yes, I'm sure he would have - but the fighters who he's got a W next to would have struggled to beat the #10 ranked British Heavy at the time.

A past it Tucker, a fasting Michael Bentt, Michael Murray - thats about his 3 best wins.

Thats the thing. You didn't need to have much power to beat Hide. Bowe half hit him at times and Hide was on the floor. Jones would have ran rings round Hide all night. Herbie was a big banger with no defence, jab, stamina or chin. He would probably be champ then if he was still around today. :D

Agreed, I couldn't see Hide beating Ruiz, the style is all wrong for him.

He was a hell of alot better than Herbie.

I'd take Morrison's wins over Carl Williams, Foreman and Ruddock over Herbie's career best wins over Tony Tucker and Michael Bennt any day.

The Chingangu loss was because of a piece of crap refereeing if I recall correctly. Chingangu hit him spark out after the shout of 'stop fighting'. Hide got to his feet wobbling around, the referee panicked for a few seconds not knowing what to do asked Hide if he could continue. Hide, who was obviously in cloud cuckoo land said yes and promptly got knocked out again within seconds.

Thats bullshit the slow mo replay clearly shows BOTH men throwing a punch on the break only Chingangus shot landed, Hides didnt. Tough shit. Hide made a whole career out of hitting guys on the deck, hitting after the bell, throwing cheap shots at press conference so boo fuckin hoo the big Zambian journeyman gave him a bit of his own medicine.

Reminds me of Tyson & his prolific use of head, elbows and shoulders v Bruno & Ruddock crying about Holyfield cheating with his head. LOL!!

Tyson was one dirty bastard, he fouled the shit out of Bruno especially in the first fight, thumbs in the eye, elbows, arm bending the lot.

Bruno deserved it, though... That b*tch looked like he had 15 arms, much like Botha.

Riddick Bowe was quoted as saying that Herbie was the hardest puncher he had ever faced.

Despite what is said about him, that is quite an accolade I think.

It's also utter bollocks, seeing as Holyfield and Golota decked the shit out of him. Mind you, I think Bowe was already a bit shot by the time of the III fight with Holyfield, his punch resistance looked a bit shaky and it took him an age to recover from the knockdown.

That doesn't mean to say they hit harder with a single shot than Herbie does James

Hmm, I reckon Golota hit a lot harder than Herbie personally, I've always thought Herbie's power rather overrated, I mean, who did he actually beat that indicates his terrifying punch power?

Hide is the most overrated Heavyweight in British boxing history. Who the hell did he beat? Big deal he 'hurt' Bowe, he was going down from the most innocuous shots.

WORST CHIN EVER!

KO'd by Chingangu.

I've never seen anything like that fight with Bowe, he was up and down more often than a U Boat commander. The 1st shot hit him high on the head, not with any great force it appeared. After that, even the merest brush of the glove had Herbie over, though he never actually looked badly hurt, but it was obvious his nervous system was completely scrambled.

Hide was one of those typical fighters that people think are really skilfull because they throw bit winging flashy shots and jink and jive around the ring, but Hyde had no defence, poor technique and could barely remain on his feet when they touched gloves.

And that punch Klitschko finished him with brushed his ear, he looked like a deer in headlights when the ref was counting. I'm ashamed to say I had a fair bit of money on Hide to win in the first 2 rounds thinking Klitschko was all hype.

Makes you wonder whether heribie had loads of money on the other guy to win in both fights, because they really were nothing shots.

I can't beleive that in one of these posts someone is complaining about Hide losing to Chingangu.

Hide was a very dirty fighter. The night he beat some Russian guy at the Alexanda Palace was disgraceful. Hide should have been thrown out long before he actually won the fight. He clearly hit the guy when on the floor several times. As Phillipe Fondu said at the time " if you're not safe when you're on the canvas, when are you safe?".

Hide is nothing more than a bully. His 'world title' reign has to go down as one of the worst in the history of the sport.

Tony Tucker said the same too. :o

Herbie was only a small HW, but he did have a ferocious single punch.

I don't know how he managed to generate so much power. :-?

Well he generally threw his whole weight behind the punch, but that also left him vulnerable too.

I find it extremely hard to believe that Herbie hit Harder than Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson. Lewis is the biggest one shot puncher seen in the heavyweight division for a very long time. His right cross was an absolute wrecking ball of a shot.
