They all play rugby!
Also combat sports are not only about being tough, it's about technique, they need to be in a gym as kids.
Also I think weight would be an issue

Can be rough lads the islanders , , wealth of untapped talent there , them Tongan and Samoan boys , especielly , used to work on the doors with a few of them , never seen anyone they could'nt handle , even some of the more notorious bikie groups , would behave where they were .
Why aren’t there more guys from those islands in the combat sports coneye?
Always wondered why there’s not been too many elite boxers from that part of the world.
For me, the south sea islands is an obvious place for locating potential talent, especially heavyweight. People talk about being bred to fight etc, generally speaking these lads are built for it more than anyone else

Just not in their culture I guess. I suspect they’d make a mark if suddenly they became boxing mad out there.

Tough buggers the islanders, no doubt about that. Discipline is a problem for some of them and lazyness.

There are some giants out there though and they seem impervious to pain :D

Used to hate it when you turned up at some backwater rugby ground and see a few Tongans in their line up. You knew you were in for some stick. Loved a late tackle and a tear up those lads.

Don't really know Tommy , I think probably because most love there rugby first and beer second lol .. and figure they can always have a fight on the rugby feild , ,, Also i think the lack of good quality gyms and trainers over there , but one thing for sure natural talent is in abudance , and most have a natural dig .

.
That doco "Paul Sykes - At Large" has interviews with Sykes's parent.

His dad came across as a loony to me. Reminded me a bit of Peter Sutcliffe's old man who was another nutcase.

Syke's poor old mum looked worn down from her life living with a crazy husband and an unstable and violent son.

As other poster's have mentioned, whilst many of Sykes' comments and antics are funny for the outside observer, constant interaction with the fellow would have had a massively negative effect on everyone close to him, most particularly his kids. And we know how they turned out.

Yep. Probably a combination of a bullying dad growing up and mental health issues. Maybe domestic violence was the norm for him too. Parents can ruin their kids, hardly surprising some turn out the way they do.

Completely agree. I'd have zero interest in watching a film about that nonce.
Where is all the nonce stuff coming from?
No evidence only rumour from within the prison walls.
I think on another thread someone claimed it was "common knowledge" that Sykes was a sexual predator towards vulnerable inmates in jail and this somehow made him a nonce.

I always understood the term "nonce" to refer to an adult who sexually abused underage kids ie under 16 years of age.

As reprehensible as Sykes preying on young adults is, I don't think he could be termed a nonce. Unless he was banged up with 14 and 15 year olds which would not happen.

I don't think anyone has ever come forward and admitted being sexually abused or raped by Sykes.

nonce
Used by prison staff, to explain the segregation of inmates who were convicted of sex crimes towards children and the other inmates

Not
On
Normal
Communal
Excercise

NONCE

Think thats why its sometimes used towards people who dont go for kids, although now you do associate the word with child molesters

I don't understand the psychology of it, but it has something to do with embracing the convict heritage.
That's why there is love for guys like Ned Kelly and Mark Chopper Reid who were both sadistic low life criminals.

Agree to a certain extent ,, Chopper Read ,, don't know if its the actual Chopper they embrace , I think its more so the Eric Bana version , , he done a terrific acting job there ,I think the general consencus is he was a crim who got what he deserved ,
, Course the docos they done in the under belly series , was popular , but i think that was more just good tv than anything else ,, , Being English , i can testify to the big amount of fookwits who hold anyone nasty in high regard , having witnessed it personaly , Go to any council estate , and you will see two bob petty crims and bullies , held in awe .

Full on wankers like Dave Courtney , becoming famous , telling lies , mates with the Twins ect , fook he was a baby when they were around ,, Football hooligans who's claim to fame for having a rumble is they were mob handed when they kicked the shit out of some poor fellow cornered on his own

Course when you talk Ned Kelly thats different , he is embraced here has an hero , but your right its that convict heritage there proud off and the fact that he was an Irishman telling the poms too go do one ,

I don't understand it really, I just didn't think it was fair branding the poms with the criminal love when it is almost publicly acceptable in Australia to look upon Ned Kelly especially as some sort of folklore heroes.

They bought back memories- what a show that was. That theme tune still haunts me. Hard not to well up after an emotional episode hearing that.

Queen Bea!

Great addition to this thread on prison hard cases.

Bea knew how to run a wing; she had that place ticking like a clock. Fekkin nonces got a good seeing to in the laundry, for sure.

Loads of other great characters too.

Jock Stewart was well-played. Cruel screw who killed Sharon but the girls got revenge and poor old Jock ended up paralysed.

Vinegar tits and The Freak scared me. No wanking material in that show. Maybe occasionally with a good lezza storyline..... (sorry! I was 14 watching in bed on black and white).

My favourite character was Noelene Burke - she was a nasty piece of work who always came off second best to Bea Smith but she had the best/funniest lines. :bag:
