Emanuel Navarrete vs. Joet Gonzalez Showdown in The Works

Plans are in the works for WBO featherweight world titlist Emanuel Navarrete to make his second defense against mandatory challenger Joet Gonzalez, both camps told Boxing Scene on Monday.

Navarrete, the former WBO junior featherweight titleholder, moved up to featherweight in October and outpointed Ruben Villa for the vacant 126-pound belt and then made his first defense by dropping Christopher “Pitufo” Diaz four times in an action-packed 12th-round knockout victory on Saturday night in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.

“(WBO president) Paco (Valcarcel) said he would prefer for us to do Navarrete against the mandatory (next). The kid is a good fighter Golden Boy has, Joet Gonzalez,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, Navarrete’s co-promoter with Zanfer Promotions, said to Boxing Scene.

Earlier on Saturday, Arum spoke to Gonzalez manager Frank Espinoza about the prospect of Gonzalez facing the Navarrete-Diaz winner next.

“I had a conversation with Bob on Saturday night before the fight and told him whoever won we wanted the winner. Bob was on board doing that fight and said he would reach out to (Golden Boy Promotions president) Eric Gomez to make it happen. That’s a fight I am looking forward to.

“Joet has all the tools to beat Navarrete even though he is a great champion and has an awkward style and throws punches from everywhere. I believe that Joet has the tools to beat this guy.”

Gomez said he and Arum had also spoken about the fight and are aiming to make it for the late August/September timeframe.

The 26-year-old Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs), of Mexico, who made five junior featherweight title defenses in nine months before moving up in weight, said after defeating Diaz that he needed to have a rest because the fight had taken a lot of out of him, so perhaps the bout with Gonzalez would move deeper into the fall.

Regardless, if the fight is finalized – and both sides expressed confidence that it would be – Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs), 27, of Los Angeles, will get his second shot at a world title. In October 2019, Gonzalez met bitter rival Shakur Stevenson for the then-vacant WBO featherweight title in Reno, Nevada, and lost a near-shutout decision – 119-109 on all three scorecards.

Gonzalez bounced back to score a one-sided 10-round decision over three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga on Sept. 12 inside the bubble of the conference center at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on a Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card.

Gomez said a fight with Navarrete, a brawler, would be a much better style of opponent for Gonzalez than the fight with the defensive-minded and ultra quick Stevenson was. Gomez said he expects the fight to produce action.

“Much better style for Joet,” Gomez said. “He won’t need track shoes this time. I discussed with Arum putting the fight in a phone booth. Both of their backs will never touch the glass walls.”

Before Navarrete faced Diaz, Arum said he had been contacted by an Australian promoter about a deal for the winner to go to Australia later in the summer, assuming the 14-day quarantine for foreigners was lifted, for a lucrative defense against 23-year-old WBO-rated challenger Brock Jarvis (18-0, 16 KOs).

But with the WBO seeking Navarrete-Gonzalez first, Arum said the plan would be have Navarrete fight Gonzalez first and then revisit the Jarvis fight next if Navarrete wins.

“I’m not going to take a chance doing an event in Australia until the winter because there’s this 14-day quarantine that knocks out any possible fight (for now),” Arum said.

“We’re going to do that fight but we’re going to do it when we know that the pandemic is over and first do Navarrete-Gonzalez.”

nava is old school , 8 title fights and 1 non-title in the last 2.5 years, and that's with the pandemic

the article says he is a brawler but that's a bit simplistic, he has that awkward skill to him and doesnt just go in there mindlessly slugging

Esquiva Falcao vs Patrick Wojcicki joins October 16th Navarrete-Gonzalez card in Reno

Top Rank initially lost the purse bid in May

While it’s yet to be officially announced, WBO featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete’s October 16th mandatory defense against Joet Gonzalez has the beginnings of an undercard. The Athletic’s Lance Pugmire reports that the IBF final eliminator between Esquiva Falcao and Patrick Wojcicki will serve as the co-feature.

Top Rank is looking to put Jose Zepeda on the card as well, plus a prospect clash between unbeaten Puerto Rican Orlando Gonzalez and two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez.

We last heard word of Falcao (28-0, 20 KO) vs. Wojcicki (14-0-1, 5 KO) in May, when Wasserman Boxing outbid Top Rank for the right to stage it. According to Germany’s SportsBuzzer and our old friend Google Translate, an August 28th date in Deutschland fell through; while I haven’t been able to find confirmation, this new arrangement suggests that Wasserman’s failure to put the fight together.

Whatever the case, this will be Wojcicki’s first appearance since 2019, as previous planned eliminators against Patrice Volny likewise collapsed. Falcao, a former Olympic silver medalist been disappointingly unambitious in his pro career, was last seen beating Artur Akavov in February.

The winner will be next in line for the winner of Gennadiy Golovkin’s and Ryota Murata’s still-brewing year-end unification match.

Sources: Emanuel Navarrete to defend title against Joet Gonzalez on Oct. 16

Emanuel Navarrete, one of boxing's most reliable action fighters, and Joet Gonzalez have agreed to terms for an Oct. 16 featherweight title fight, multiple sources told ESPN.

Navarrete's 126-pound title defense will headline Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+. A venue has not yet been finalized.

A 26-year-old Mexican, Navarrete rose to prominence with an upset victory over Isaac Dogboe in 2018 to win a 122-pound title. He defeated Dogboe again in the rematch and, after a few routine title defenses, relinquished his belt to compete at 126 pounds.

Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs), a Los Angeles-based fighter, won the vacant featherweight title in October 2020 with a decision victory over Ruben Villa. He was successful in his first defense, a 12th-round TKO of Christopher Diaz in April.

Matched with a fellow pressure fighter in Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs), Navarrete figures to be part of another slugfest. The bout will also pit Top Rank against Golden Boy (Gonzalez's promoter).

Gonzalez's lone pro defeat came in October 2019, a unanimous-decision loss to Shakur Stevenson in a 126-pound title fight. He rebounded with a victory over Miguel Marriaga in September 2020.

Navarrete is rated No. 2 by ESPN at 126 pounds. Gonzalez, 27, is unranked.

Top Rank Moves Emanuel Navarrete-Joet Gonzalez Card To October 15 In San Diego

Emanuel Navarrete and Joet Gonzalez have a new date and an official site for their featherweight title fight.

Boxing Scene has learned that Navarrete will defend his WBO 126-pound championship against Gonzalez on October 15 in San Diego. ESPN+ will stream Navarrete-Gonzalez as a main event on a Friday night from Pechanga Arena, the venue formerly known as San Diego Sports Arena.

Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs) and Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs) were supposed to square off the following night, October 16. Pechanga Arena was not available to promoter Top Rank for that Saturday night, however, and the company had the flexibility to switch dates because the card will not air on ESPN’s linear network.

Top Rank executives surveyed several sites before they picked Pechanga Arena, which can accommodate more than 16,000 fans for boxing. The building will be scaled for less than half of that capacity for the Navarrete-Gonzalez card.

The 26-year-old Navarrete, of San Juan Zitlaltepec Mexico, will make a mandated defense of his WBO belt against Gonzalez. The 27-year-old Gonzalez, of Glendora, California, is the WBO’s number one-rated contender for Navarrete’s title.

Navarrete, a former WBO junior featherweight champion, will make the second defense of the WBO featherweight title he won by out-pointing previously unbeaten southpaw Ruben Villa (18-1, 5 KOs) last October 9 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.

e extended his winning streak to 29 when he stopped Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (26-3, 16 KOs) in the 12th round of their April 24 bout at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.

Gonzalez has lost only to former WBO featherweight champ Shakur Stevenson. The unbeaten Stevenson (16-0, 8 KOs), a 2016 Olympic silver medalist from Newark, New Jersey, thoroughly out-boxed Gonzalez and beat him by wide distances on all three scorecards in their 12-round fight for the then-vacant WBO 126-pound crown in October 2019 at Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada.

Gonzalez bounced back from that lopsided loss when he conquered Colombia’s Miguel Marriaga by unanimous decision in a 10-rounder nearly a year ago. He has not fought since his victory over Marriaga (30-4, 26 KOs) last September 12 at MGM Grand Conference Center.

Press Release | Undercard Information

Mexico’s fighting cowboy is ready to roll into San Diego. Two-division kingpin Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete will defend his WBO featherweight world title against mandatory challenger Joet Gonzalez on Friday, Oct. 15 at Pechanga Arena San Diego.

In the 10-round welterweight co-feature, San Diego native Giovani Santillan makes his first hometown appearance in more than seven years against Angel “Relampago” Ruiz, the southpaw windmill from Culiacán, Mexico.

Navarrete-Gonzalez and Santillan-Ruiz will stream live and exclusively on ESPN+ starting at approximately 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT. The undercard — also streaming live and exclusively on ESPN+ — will feature middleweight prospect Javier “Milwaukee Made” Martinez (4-0, 2 KOs) in a six-rounder, undefeated 2016 Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (13-0, 12 KOs) in an eight-rounder at junior welterweight, and an eight-round junior lightweight battle between rising Puerto Rican prospect Henry “Moncho” Lebron (13-0, 9 KOs) and noted spoiler Manuel Rey Rojas (21-5, 6 KOs).

Promoted by Top Rank, tickets starting at $55 go on sale Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 10 a.m. PT and can be purchased by visiting AXS.com.

“Emanuel Navarrete never disappoints, as he’s a true Mexican warrior who fights in a crowd-pleasing style,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Joet Gonzalez earned his position as the mandatory challenger, and he has everything it takes to give Navarrete a formidable challenge. I am also thrilled that Giovani Santillan will get an opportunity to fight in front of the hometown fans in an excellent fight against Angel Ruiz.”

Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs) is 8-0 with six knockouts in world title fights, a busy championship run that began in December 2018 with his dominant decision over Isaac Dogboe to win the WBO junior featherweight world title. Following five title defenses in nine months, Navarrete moved up to featherweight and bested Ruben Villa by unanimous decision last October to win the WBO world title. He defended that title in April and knocked out Christopher Diaz in the 12th round. Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs) fell short in his first world title opportunity in October 2019, losing a decision to pound-for-pound star Shakur Stevenson. He returned last September and handed a one-sided beating to three-time world title challenger Miguel Marriaga to earn his WBO No. 1 ranking.

"I am focused on winning this fight and defending my world title for the second time. I know that Joet Gonzalez is a good fighter. I respect him and he is also my mandatory challenger, but I am the champion, and I will show him why. This belt isn't going anywhere,” Navarrete said. "I hope that my Mexican fans will support me in San Diego, and my fans from Tijuana can also come to the fight. I will give them a great fight, and it will be a great victory for all my Mexican people.”

Gonzalez said, “I am excited and thankful to receive a second world title opportunity, this time against a great Mexican warrior like Navarrete. I know I have what it takes to become a world champion, and I will show the world that on Oct. 15. No disrespect to Navarrete, but this is my time.”

Santillan (27-0, 15 KOs), born and raised in San Diego, first picked up a pair of gloves at 8 years old and fought nearly 80 amateur bouts before turning pro in 2012 in Temecula, California. Santillan rose the ranks fighting mostly in Southern California, but he’s made only one pro appearance in his hometown, a 2014 TKO over Osenohan Vazquez. In June 2020, he survived a razor-thin majority decision against former lightweight world champion Antonio DeMarco. After a year-long layoff, he returned June 26 with a one-sided decision over Cecil McCalla. Ruiz (17-1, 12 KOs), a six-year pro, won the first 16 fights of his career before suffering a shocking second-round knockout loss to Javier Flores in October 2019. He came back in April 2021 and bullied the previously unbeaten Bobirzhan Mominov en route to an eight-round decision on a nationally televised card.

“As soon as I got the call, I was excited because this is something my dad and I talked about for a long time, being part of a big show in San Diego,” Santillan said. “Ruiz is a good fighter, a hungry guy, but I’m hungry as well. We actually sparred a few years back and did some rounds. It was good work. I can’t wait for Oct. 15. I’m going to perform for my family, my friends, and my city. This is an incredible opportunity.”

Lebron (13-0, 9 KOs), a southpaw who won Puerto Rican amateur national titles in 2015 and 2016 before turning pro, is coming off last August’s near-shutout decision over veteran Luis Porozo. One of his island nation’s most promising prospects, the 23-year-old has six knockouts in two rounds or less. Rojas (21-5, 6 KOs) has only been knocked out once as a pro and most recently won a one-sided decision over Tyler McCreary in June on a Top Rank card.

Press Release | A few words with welterweight Giovani Santillan

Welterweight Giovani Santillan (27-0, 15 KOs), will return to the ring this Friday (October 15th) against Angel Ruiz (17-1, 12 KOs), of Los Angeles. The ten-round bout, shown live on ESPN+, will take place at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, in Santillan’s hometown. The bout will support Emanuel Navarrete’s (34-1, 29 KOs) WBO featherweight title defense against Joet Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs). This will be Santillan's first fight in San Diego since 2014, and his second fight with head coach Robert Garcia, who has his father Memo Santillan in the corner as an assistant. Santillan has a co-promotional agreement with Top Rank Inc., who is promoting this event. Here is what Santillan had to say about training camp, his matchup with Ruiz, and more.

On his recent training camp: "I have started working with Robert Garcia as well as with my father after the Antonio DeMarco fight, and this camp has been very productive. I was in the gym with great fighters like Jose Ramirez, Mikey Garcia, Vergil Ortiz, you name it, I was sparring the best. I am driving two-hours round trip multiple times a-week to get the best work possible, and I know that everything I put into this camp from time, money and sacrifice, will show up on this huge stage. I’ll be fighting in my hometown of San Diego, with a lot of family and friends in attendance, so I’ll be ready for war.”

On his match-up vs. Angel Ruiz: "I sparred him a few years back, I am not taking much from the sparring since it is just sparring, but I know what he brings to the table. He is a good fighter, and I am well-prepared to face a warrior like him. This is the biggest fight of my life, and I am looking to put on a show - and make my name known in the welterweight division. I will put it this way, I won't be surprised by what he does in the ring on Friday night."

On fighting on ESPN+: "It is a great moment in my career. Thompson Boxing and Top Rank have done wonders for me, allowing me to fight on such great cards, and this feels like a big moment in my career, fighting at home, on television, with the world watching. I didn't come this far just to come this far. I want this to be a memorable moment and having a great network like ESPN+ stream this fight, makes it even more special."

On what a win will do for his career: "A win puts me in the mix with a lot of good fighters. I don't want to say anyone's name just yet, but I have nearly 30 wins with no losses and am in one of the most stacked divisions in all of boxing, the welterweight division. I need to look like I belong on television and look like I am a main event fighter. If I look the part and perform how I should, I know my promoters will do their job and get me in with one of the best fighters in the world, but right now I must do my job on Friday.”

Emanuel Navarrete-Joet Gonzalez, Undercard Weigh-In Report From San Diego

A scale malfunction made Emanuel Navarrete and Joet Gonzalez wait a few extra minutes to make weight Thursday afternoon in San Diego.

Once that temporary problem was rectified, both boxers met their contractual obligations to partake in their 12-round fight Friday night for Navarrete’s WBO featherweight title, the main event of a seven-bout card at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. ESPN+ is scheduled to start streaming the entire show at 8:30 p.m. EDT and 5:30 p.m. PDT.

Navarrete, 26, and Gonzalez, 28, both came in slightly under the featherweight maximum of 126 pounds.

Navarrete (34-1, 29 KOs), of San Juan Zitlaltepec Mexico, stepped on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at 125.8 pounds. Gonzalez, of Glendora, California, came in at 125.4 pounds.

The taller Navarette will make the second defense of a WBO belt he won by out-pointing previously unbeaten southpaw Ruben Villa (18-1, 5 KOs) last October 9 at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. The former WBO junior featherweight champ will take a 29-fight winning streak into his fight against Gonzalez, thanks to a 12th-round stoppage of Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (26-3, 16 KOs) on April 24 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.

Gonzalez (24-1, 14 KOs) will fight for the WBO featherweight title for the second time in a little less than two years. Former champion Shakur Stevenson thoroughly out-boxed Gonzalez in their 12-round fight for the then-vacant WBO featherweight title in October 2019 at Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada.

turned out to be a good fight

nava has a clumsy skill to him, and had more firepower than joe. massacred his right eye .

but joe fought hard and gave nava some problems, nava didnt like the rough housing and was getting hit

nava needs to stop layying on his side so much, he's not slick with it
