Aaron Pryor? Granted I haven't seen that much of him, but in his fights with Arguello he was perpetual motion with non-stop pressure, foregoing any jab.

He had a midround stretch in the first arguello fight where he was on his toes using his jab, but it's memorable because it was an anomaly. The Gratest wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 08:16 Aaron Pryor? Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
He jabbed so much against Chris Byrd that he wore his left shoulder out.
Re: Elite Fighters who don't rely on a jab
Honestly I just love your humorous posts, even if they are mocking me. Maybe game-changer is the wrong descriptor but I believe his style will influence future competitors. Time will tell I guess, but I think I'm right, because I'm always right. I've never been wrong in my life.adislav123 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 06:29lazboy wrote: ↑02 Mar 2021, 22:28Thought he landed heaps against corrie sanders too.Jeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑02 Mar 2021, 22:25

really thought for a moment i would never be able to stop laughing.
canelo definitely developed into an excellent fighter (who LOST TO GOLOVKIN. BACK 2 BACK) but you guys are really taking it to far...'gamechanger' cause 'he doesn't jab'...
get a grip!

Quoting and bolding for future reference.adislav123 wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 06:43 will be exciting to see how the mexican messiah who changed the boxing game by 'not jabbing' comes up with a plan to even legit win a single round versus saunders.

How about Joe Frazier?
He was always bobbing and weaving and looking to come up with hooks, especially his vaunted Left hook; not really reliant on a jab.

Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
There ain't really too many Elite fighters who don't jab. Some jab more than others, but all of 'em jab some. It's such a basic weapon that it's kinda hard to get far in Boxing without it.
A Boxer without a Jab is kinda like a Gun without Bullets.

Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
emmanuel navarette, mostly leads with sweeping hooks and uppercuts. not an elite p4p type, but world class in 2 divisions now and constantly beating guys who look neater on the eye and just seem to do things more technically correct than he does, in addition to usually being faster than him too
oscar valdez too, mostly a lead hooker. same with stablemates andy ruiz and ryan garcia does lots of lead hooking instead of jabbing too. the reynoso gym is big on that
julio cesar martinez, arguably the top at his weight, mostly a power punching little wrecking ball
actually , a lot of good mexican fighters dont really jab all that much. they seem very favourable to leading with power. jam munguia too, luis nery a lot as well.

Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
Depends on weight style and opponents among other things.lazboy wrote: ↑02 Mar 2021, 19:08 In my opinion, Canelo rarely uses his jab. I appreciate he has one, and a good one - I believe it was on display against Chavez Jr and earlier in his career but it is by no means his weapon of choice. I believe this is rare amongst the elite. Who are the other elite fighters, throughout history, that rarely used a jab?
Roy Jones Jr comes to mind.
Mike Tyson perhaps...I remember him jabbing away occasionally though, more so than Canelo I believe.
Canelo has a good jab up close, he can crack with it.
Just recently Wilder used his to try and pry open Fury during the early rounds with shots to the body, Fury went with the conventional straight lead jab.
It's different at different times depends on the circumstances.
Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
I appreciate that it all depends and I recognised the Canelo jab in the JCCjnr fight ahd earlier in his career but overwhelmingly, Canelo doesn’t jab. Even when he fought a master jabber in Golovkin, he didn’t jab…often.Evander wrote: ↑18 Oct 2021, 01:16Depends on weight style and opponents among other things.lazboy wrote: ↑02 Mar 2021, 19:08 In my opinion, Canelo rarely uses his jab. Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
Wilder and Fury are clearly both jabbers, as with AJ and Usyk.

He doesn't need too so he doesn't is my guess.lazboy wrote: ↑18 Oct 2021, 01:51I appreciate that it all depends and I recognised the Canelo jab in the JCCjnr fight ahd earlier in his career but overwhelmingly, Canelo doesn’t jab. Why not save it for those moments when it's crucial.
Look at the BJS fight.
He walked through him, jab played a role but once he'd broken through there were any number of weapons available for him to get the job done.
Re: Elite Fighters who don't jab
I definitely understand what you are saying, I would just add “he doesn’t need to because he trains not to use a jab”. Canelo clearly loves his power shots and has the ability to rely on them. That’s what makes him different in my opinion.

Oh ok, that surprises me.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑18 Oct 2021, 03:47Jabs account for roughly 50% of the punches Canelo throws.
He might use the jab less frequently than most other fighters, but I wouldn’t use the word “rare” to describe the discrepancy.

Yeah Vitali threw lots of straight lefts, which are effectively a powerful jab.Counter-puncher wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 07:57he only had two punches, both of em straight, law of averages alone would say 50% of his shots were jabsdanconnollyeire wrote: ↑03 Mar 2021, 07:49Vitali jabbed constantly. Re: Elite Fighters who don't rely on a jab
Qawi, on form, always established his jab to the body early and it really made it a long night for his opponent (from the punch itself and also the way it set up level changes for the overhand right). That jab to the body was heavy
