Tough matchup. Schmeling arguably had the better wins. He was certainly the more intelligent fighter between the two. But he could be too cautious and too technical at times.

Ellis was certainly faster than he was. Schmeling could be out-boxed as he was against Steve Hamas and Jack Sharkey. Ellis was originally a middleweight, and it must be pointed out that Schmeling didn't have the best of chins as he was knocked out in one round by Gypsy Daniels a light heavyweight.

Much as I like the old-time fighters I think Ellis wins a decision over Schmeling.

Both were good tactical boxers. Schmeling had the edge in power, which would become crucial. Ellis would feel it and get uncomfortable. Schmeling would outbox Jimmy, possibly drop him once or twice.

They would exchange good jabs, but Schmeling would out-land Ellis behind his powerful right hands to take a decision.

Interesting fight. Would have to lean towards Schmeling. If they fought three times, Schmeling would probably take 2 of 3, maybe stopping him once. Very unlikely that Ellis would stop Schmeling. Ellis was a little quicker. Both were very smart fighters.
