Awesome matchmaking..... When

Post by rhino222 »

Was just thinking about one of the best pieces of matchmaking I've seen. A match where someone who is limited (with the utmost respect) and can use a name (probably past its sell by date) to further enhance an over achieving career.

My vote goes to Tommy Coyle v Michael Katsides.

Katsides was a still slightly dangerous ex proper world champion.. A great scalp for the gritty Hull puncher.

Is Taylor really limited with an over-achieving career?

Dave Allen against Lucas Browne. Made Allen look a lot better than he is/was.

lol, after allen vs browne, people were actually calling for the bbbc to not let allen-price happen, and were fearing for big pricey's life

allen had quite the little period there of being wildly overrated, fast times at matchroom high

Yeah - crazy to think he headlined an O2 show after he was outboxed by Lenroy Thomas and badly beaten by Ortiz/Whyte.

Good promotion (by himself, Matchroom and Sky) goes a long way.

Eggington v Malignaggi....An ancient decent profile name to put on the ledger. The New Yorker was poifect.

Eggington v Gavin..The right time to settle the 'battle of Brum'. Gavin's bubble well burst at this point and a
'bostin' name, to raise Egg's profile.

Steve Foster v Chris Pyatt.....A shot Pyatt was a crackin' opponent for The Viking. A world title shot
followed.

Leonard-Hagler in April 1987. Leonard said it would never happen but Hagler was slowing after wars with Tommy Hearns and John Mugabi and Leonard decided to go for it. The fight was partly won in the build-up when Leonard's brilliant adviser, Mike Trainer, squeezed a whole number of concessions out of the Hagler camp, most crucially the distance of 12 rounds and not 15.

Can add Lucas Browne vs Dillion Whyte also - the fight was the first (and only I think) "gloves are off" type promotion to a non PPV fight and after that fight all Whyte's fights were on PPV.

I've nothing but respect for Taylor, but everyone must concur Its a pretty weak division compared to the halcyon days of a prime Tszyu, Mayweather, Judah, Hatton and Cotto era of old at 140.

It’s not a super stacked division but the guys he’s fought for the belts have been good/really strong fighters.

Baranchyk may have taken a few losses since but was a decent aggressive fighter when Taylor fought him. Prograis was an excellent win, as was Ramirez.

It’s not a great era for the division but it’s not a bad one either. Maussa, Urango, M’Baye, Rees, Lovemore Ndou, Holt were all world champs and around a similar time or just after when Hatton was on top and I don’t think any of those guys would have won a world title in the last 2-3 years.
