Savannah Marshall, who this weekend won the WBO middleweight champion vacated by Claressa Shields (pictured), is the last person to beat Shields, accomplishing that feat in the amateurs in 2012. In her post-fight interview, Marshall called out the unbeaten Shields, who currently holds two world titles at junior middleweight: "The only reason Claressa has got the belts is because she got there before me, not because she's better than me, because I will tell you now, she certainly isn't. And I know she doesn't want none of me."

Shields on Twitter: "Be careful what you say, it comes a time you gotta back all that sh*t up."

Marshall's promoter Eddie Hearn: "Great performance from Savannah Marshall. Heaviest hands I’ve seen in women’s boxing up close... Claressa Shields, let’s go!"

Shields' manager Mark Taffet: "Eddie Hearn knows how business gets done...if he really wanted to do biz, he’d be talking at me, not you Claressa. Congrats to Savannah Marshall on a strong performance...looking forward to 2021."

Shields: "Yeah Eddie Hearn, you know the drill. Don’t tweet me, call him."
--------------------

It's bound to happen soon..

Has Marshall got Shields' number in the ring? Has Shields improved?

I just hope this isn't ppv..

Whatever anyone thinks of Eddie, he's business savvy enough to realise that he isn't going to make any money on a women's PPV. Even I wouldn't buy that!

I think they will get it on and I hope Savannah slaps Shields silly.

any movement on this fight? Shields would be wise to duck this fight, but it probably annoys her too that Marshall beat her in amateurs. I really love watching Marshall fight. she just slowly weighs them up and then goes in for the kill. I'd pay to see this fight...although hopefully it'll be on DAZN Deutschland

I think Shields is cracking looking but I'm not into this gangsta, ghetto talk and look from any woman. Marshall seems a tough northern lass so it should be a good fight.

This was no surprise.
They set her up with a 35-year-old, retired fighter with a 3-6 record the first time and she barely won that.
This time they give her a 21-year-old, cutie, coming up from 145 and the youngster didn't show up to make Claressa look good.

Focus on either boxing or mma Claressa.
If you're a part-timer in both, you will start collecting losses on a regular basis.

I wonder if this defeat will make Shields a little more humble. It's a defeat in a different sport but surely this lowers her expectations of being labelled the GWOAT?

I don’t know much about womens boxing but I saw shields outpoint Christina Hammer, wouldn’t this just be a repeat of that? shields seems to be the Andre Ward of women’s boxing, win on points via superior skills in deathly boring encounters

Claressa Shields vs. Savannah Marshall on Track For May or June

The middleweight unification between Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall is still on track for 2022, with the event date to land in the summer, according to the unbeaten British champion.

Initially, both boxers were scheduled to co-headline a December card - but Marshall suffered a hand injury and was forced to withdraw from her fight. And eventually the entire event was pushed back.

Marshall is being positioned to defend her title on a date in February.

Shields will now make her UK debut on January 29, as she faces mandatory challenger Ema Kozin with the IBF, WBA and WBC middleweight titles at stake.

Shields' UK debut will be the co-feature to the British grudge match between Chris Eubank Jr. and Liam Williams.

Provided everything goes as planned, then Shields will face Marshall, who holds the WBO title, in a full division unification in the summer.

"It's on track for the summer," Marshall said to Sky Sports. "It's in my sights. She doesn't get under my skin. We go way back - like old pals!"

BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom, who has both boxers under contract, expects Shields to really show off her skills in her next few outings.

"Claressa was struggling for opportunities because she was too good. She now actually has someone to rival her. We'll see the best Claressa over her next couple of fights. It will end with those two together in the best female fight of all time," Shalom said.

"We want Claressa back in the ring defending her title and for Savannah to gain another. They will meet in May or June next year. Savannah will be back in February in Newcastle after a hand injury. She will be looking at stepping up to win another title."

Promoter Shalom has hinted that a deal for the two to fight has already been agreed upon, he said: "Not to put pressure on Savannah I expect her to deal with Claressa so this fight should be no problem. The negotiations are just getting to the end now, it's just a matter of days before we finish that. I am already thinking about Savannah Claressa, it's the first fight we wanted to make when we came to Sky.

"It's a fight they both want, you need great rivals, women's boxing has probably always struggled with that as it grows as a sport in its own right. It's the first fight in women's boxing where there's genuine rivalry and dislike. I think this is going to go off the scale in terms of women's boxing."

 That's one way of selling a fight.

Although I'm having flashbacks to that movie THE GREAT WHITE HYPE where they announced Terry Conklin as the challenger to James Roper and justified it saying he defeated him in the amateurs knocking him out cold to which Damon Wayans says, "Man I was 17 I could kill Howdy Doody now!"

Claressa Shields vs Savannah Marshall now signed for undisputed middleweight title fight which will take place in September in UK

The highly anticipated showdown will take place on September 3 or September 10 in the UK with an official announcement imminent.

America’s Shields is undoubtedly the more accomplished fighter having won two Olympic gold medals as an amateur and become a three-weight champion as a professional.

In her entire career to date, Shields has only lost one fight when she was an amateur.

That defeat came at the hands of Britain’s Marshall and now, a decade later, the pair will finally meet again.

“Shields vs Marshall – both fighters have signed, we’re ready go,” Shalom told iFL TV.

“It’s gonna be September 3 or September 10, it’s gonna be in the UK.

“I can’t wait.

“We made those signings back in October, they were [some] of our first signings.

“We’ve seen Savannah go from strength to strength.

“Almost middle of the cards, overlooked in my opinion, and that’s why we were so desperate to get her.

“I genuinely believe she’s a pound-for-pound star, she’s a national treasure.

“I genuinely think she is one of the most talented fighters, the biggest puncher potentially we’ve ever seen in women’s boxing.

“And now she gets her opportunity against widely considered the ‘Greatest Woman of All Time’.

“Who can argue with two gold medals, with multi-weight world champion.

“She’s done so much for 27 years old Claressa Shields.

“It’s a massive fight, the rivalry is there.

“I don’t wanna compare the two with Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano – that was a massive fight and something that we really were inspired by to be honest, to see how big women’s sport can be.

“And we think Shields vs Marshall in the UK is gonna be the same.”

VADA has been provided enrollment paperwork on both Ms. Shields and Mr. Marshall,” Dr. Margaret Goodman, founder, president and chairperson of VADA, confirmed to Boxing Scene.. “Fighters are not enrolled until we are given the go ahead to begin testing eligibility.”

Testing traditionally begins upon the official announcement of the fight, which will be the case in this fight.

“Ms. Marshall’s advisor indicated that they are waiting for the fight date to be scheduled,” Goodman confirmed, in response to a previous claim that both fighters—specifically Marshall—were already enrolled in the program.

Source: Claressa Shields-Savannah Marshall showdown being finalized for Sept. 10 at O2 Arena in London

The Claressa Shields-Savannah Marshall fight for the undisputed middleweight championship will take place on Sept. 10 at the O2 Arena in London, a source told ESPN on Tuesday.

The details are still being finalized, the source said, and an official announcement is expected in early July. But the finalization process is not expected to change the main particulars of the fight.

Shields (12-0, 2 KO), who holds the WBC, WBA and IBF titles, will fight for the second straight time in the United Kingdom after defeating Ema Kozin by unanimous decision in February. She is also expected to fight in a special attraction in mixed martial arts in the PFL later this year.

Marshall (12-0, 10 KO), the WBO champion, last fought in April, knocking out Femke Hermans in the third round.

Shields and Marshall have talked publicly about fighting for years -- Marshall defeated Shields as an amateur, giving Shields her only loss as a boxer in the preliminaries of the AIBA World Championships on May 14, 2012.

Multiple dates for the fight had been discussed throughout the past six months, ever since Marshall and Shields both signed a multifight agreement with Boxxer in November 2021. An injury to Marshall pushed back the fight from a potential date in July to September. Shields initially had said she wasn't going to fight Marshall in September because it would potentially interfere with her MMA preparation, but then decided to take the fight.
