Running versus cycling

Post by goose 5 »

Does anyone here know the formula for converting miles cycled on a stationery bike to miles running ? I seem to recall reading that ten miles on the bike is equal to running 2.25 miles but I am not certain.

Apparently a 1:3 ratio is used. 1km of running = 3km of cycling.

I think I will be using it for some sprint conversions. The shins, knees etc don't hold up so well when running anymore. I've put on about 20kgs over the past couple of years while not exercising so on top of wear and tear from years of competitive sport the extra strain from the weight has made running real painful.

They are both Too different to truly have a Conversion ratio. If I walk 3 miles, or bike 8 miles, or jog for a mile and a half, supposedly it's a similar cardio workout. But the muscle exertion comparison aspect is so different with all 3.

I think that depends on how hard you push though. For me it's a bit easier to cruise and not wear myself out riding a bike compared to running. There is obviously some type of exhaustion involved with the impact of running on your muscles though.

ya i have never been able to feel as exhausted through cycling as i have through running, for me running on ground is still hands down the most stressing cardio by far

You need to cycle for a much longer period of time than running to get the same benefit.

And remember a boxing fight is relatively short.

Cycling uphill I always found hard going when I was reasonably fit. Running uphill a little easier. Possibly depends on the bike though

I can't help but feel that this particular thread should basically be converted into a Workout/Exercise/Journal based thread.

Anyway, at 51, I'm Really Extra enthusiastic about Bicycling these days, even with the harsh northeast Of the USA winter weather conditions approaching.

Today,I took advantage of the slight warm-front that's been gifted onto the 🇺🇸 USA New Yorkers.
I have 2 bicycles, soon to be 3. Awaiting the Mongoose Fat-Tire bike soon to be delivered to my home.

I rode my ole Schwinn Hybrid today.
The ride was Some Workout !
The two initial hills that I chugged up extra fast left me gasping for several minutes. It's Such a Blessing that I can ride a bike though. My poor younger brother never learned how to ride a bicycle. I'm thinking about buying him a stationary bike.

When I ride my ole Schwinn Hybrid bicycle up a hill, typically I pedal as quickly as possible, while remaining on the seat, whereas on a Mountain Bike, I find myself instinctively standing up while pedaling up a hill. I think riding up a hill either way has it's own unique type of exercise and muscular exertion based benefits.

Personally I think that Bicycling Can have more sport specific based carryover towards enhancing dynamic based movements, such as carrying over better than running, when it comes to performance enhancement in martial arts kicking Manuevers. Especially the basic core movements such as front heel kicks and side kicks.

Try multiple bike sprints up a hill. It doesn't even have to be That long or That steep. It'll put a nice hurtin on ya ! :geek:

To start with , you have to make a difference between running and jogging ,,, Jogging is easy anyone can do it because its at your own pace , Running can be hard if you actually run not jog ,,, Now the diff between running and cycling most of us are mere mortals who would be doing it for fitness , not profesional cyclists in the tour de france ,

So whats the best , suppose its how hard you push yourself , cycling fast and hard up hill is hard , running up hill is hard ,, but for me , i will say I'm getting older , and especielly in the last couple of years i've felt my fitness go down , mind you i put on 20 plus kilo in a short time , which i've lost 13 of it in the last 8-10 months , , but regards what i can do now ,

I can't run anymore , my hips hurt i just find it impossible ,, even walking a long way hurts the hips , so i do cycle ,, where i used to run 10 klm i now cycle ,, thing with cycling i learnt is to have them straps on the feet otherwise your knees play up becuase you tend to cycle with your knees on an angle straps keep them straight .

For me running beats cycling for fitness ,,

I recommend to go for best suitable sidi shoes for the cycling. Since most of the cyclist have flat feet issue, so you can always check best review shoe of 2021 from https://bestrunningaccessories.com/inju ... bad-knees/

I only stand up on a push bike on long tough hills but on abit shorter ones I sit down I find it tougher but better for exercise as i cycle to work at the moment being a few miles from it and my house Backs on to the forest it’s good for running too but suffer with plantar fasciitis at the moment so running’s off limits

running burns more calories than cycling because it uses more muscles
