I guess he's learnt from his old man's mistake on his way up when Nigel got very bold and tackled fellow British title contender Michael Watson :box:

I respect Benn senior much more for his willingness to take a gamble even though it backfired. Ultimately he improved hugely for the experience and the fans got treated to a good fight with a tremendous atmosphere.

Benn jnr has consistently avoided giving the fans a big domestic dust up :brick:

Definitely. Although it's been overdue.
Especially for a guy who gets so much TV coverage.

If you ignore the hype and talk from Matchroom and Benn himself, this is OK. Aligeri is older now but I think he causes issues for Benn.

One of those ones that could be good matchmaking, as Algieri is older, hasn't been that active, relies on his legs which are the first things to slow down, doesn't have much pop , and is a name. Or a banana skin as he's a good mover with plenty of experience at a much higher level than Benn and is really hard to pin down

All depends which Algieri shows up I suppose , haven't seen his last fight but he won by shutout

Edit: didn't realise Algieri was 37, and he looks strangely gaunt in that picture, pro ably good matchmaking then

after this , give conny someone at 147 with some fire in their offense. not saying match him vs some huge banger, but so many of these guys are defensive dudes without pop

Older already got another job has'nt he ,, So older , smaller lighter punching simi profesional , getting probably his last decent pay packet , WHY bother watching we all know the result , Benn steamrolls him ,, h uses his experience to move , run , throw light punches without getting hurt ,, then he gets steamrolled when he thinks he's earned his money .

Benn then tells the world , I,m ready , I'm still learning but i'm already knocking out greats and HOFamers , and I'm only a couple of fights from Canelo , But first i'm gonna go back with my great team and learn some more , cos i'm , not quite ready for a British or European title ,, besides I don't need one ,,, cos i doin't need the money , my dad looked after me , now Eddie and my team are looking after me , I don't need no stinking hard fights i want Canelo , i don't care how big he is , , I'm still learning , but even though i'm learning i'm knocking out greats like Algeria , and the mexican , err quite can't remember his name but he's a former great .
I'm Conor son of Nigel , i'll take anyone anywhere anytime ,, , ecept for a couple who want me , , but they don't matter cos they got nothing i want , i don't need no stinking Eoro title , i'm Conor Benn

People just hate connor because he has got oppertunity because of his name. But if you look at his carrer, you have to respect his progression. pre-Pandemic benn was considered bad and well bellow british levle and was beating guys iv never heard of. Now in the last 12 months he has:

-beat Formela, who no-matter what you say with him after the fact opened at even money with the bookies. Benn won every round.
- Then he beat Vargas in half a round, who in his most recent outing had gone 7 with Ortiz, one of the deadlyest propspects at 147 in a long time.
- Then he won basicaly every round Adrian Granados (1 or 2 that granados might of nicked but could go either way).

Now everyone shitting on Algieri as an opponent even though 14 months ago i predict most of them would of picked him to beat connor.. I understand the hate, anoying being told he is a killer only to see him not fight Ava ect. But you have to look at where he was pre formela, at that point no sane person would of sugested he fight at world levle within a year, and his team are sane, moving him at a fast pace, but talking him up at a faster pace. just ignore the talking.

lol actually puffing up the vargas win, dear lawd!

i rate conor, i said 2years ago he'll be a world champ (and got called crazy) and still believe it. his progress has been great, but clearly they are nervous about him still, hence the continual matching with light hitting defensive fighters, in this case a guy with hardly any pop even at light welter a decade ago. wouldve loved to see him fight lopez, someone who has some fire of their own and comes to fight rather than fiddle around and survive.

its been like 5-6 fights in a row with the same type, i must have a bit more confidence in him than his team does

And its not hard too spot ,, Problem with Conor there is no humble abut him , he really believes the bollocks he sprouts , theres prabably quite a few in the UK who could of advanced a lot further than Conor given the chance , such has being well paid , not having to work , daddy pushing , and hand picked opponents , all over the hill looking for last paydays , money spent getting the guys who suit his style , and know what there there for , but regardless , like you said just naturally defensive light hitters , , just in case they don't read the script

Puffing up the Vargas result not the win. He was always going to win, but stopping a Vargas fast is impressive. Bit like AJ stopping kingpin, it’s not a good win but it’s a good result.

Iv also been a bit on the connor train, but I think he is going the right speed. Take all the right fights with the goal of fighting for a world championship 2023ish.

This, then lopez, then 2 or 3 of ava, brook, khan, Lithuanian, then picking a path to the easiest belt.

I will say I wanted him to just clean out British fighting 5 times a year (except McKinnon, I’d openly duck that). But I don’t hate where its gone

ya, he must punch harder than spence, garcia, ortiz, and all those dudes! guys gonna be talking about the night benn beat sam 'bam' vargas for years to come!

they should mix in something new, a new style guy or someone who brings an attribute he hasnt faced much of. that doesnt mean he has to jump to world class or anything, but it's basically guys in the non-punching defensive/survivor mode continually. and when they get a guy who reached better heights than the rest, of course it's compensated for by the guy coming up from a career mostly at 140

his team obviously aren't particularly confident in him at the moment and are worried of him taking hard shots. i have more faith than they do. put him in with a welter who has some offense of their own and comes to fight. let him see what he needs to do in a 2 way-er, not merely hunting down light hitters

Look, kinda of agree. But im glad they are giving him the right fights to learn rather than fights that can look pretty on paper, its refreshing to see. Just happy he isnt in with a bunch of "freestar Zsolt Osadans" with some fuckhead presenters saying "someones Oh has got to Go."

Agree he has to move on from these guys soon. This then lopez are the last of these types he can fight (lopez is this type, just a very high levle of the type...). Then he has to move away from Big fight losers.

for his next fight.....

guys like lopez, ivan golub, serg lipinets........will make him fight a different type of fight. theres ava too but that seems to just be talk and fantasy for the moment. domestically, i think even someone like essuman will come and fight hard, with some strength.

while they are going on past names in their late 30s.............at least robert guerrero always throws down and is coming off the win over ortiz

one of these guys next is what i'd like to see. not yet another feather hands defensive guy, like van heerden, who was already in the mix for this fight. at least fight another type of opponent before facing another dude like that

I don’t think so. He was in a fairly close fight until the stoppage against Jenkins and there’s nothing I’ve seen that would suggest he’d beat Benn.

i think algieri is a punch bag for benn similar to the german fighter he beat, benn is coming a long well why rush him be good experience fighting a fighter who has been in with real world champs i think benn will stop him mid late

Neil Marsh obsession with Benn is Paulie Malignaggi/Conor McGregor level, Avanesyan is a level above Benn I don't see why their chasing him, especially after they knocked back a title eliminator, make your own way ffs it's cringe

If he wasn't the main event and so much hype he wouldn't get criticised tbf. It's not really that competitive so it's understandable.

They’re doing it because Benn is a winnable fight for them where they could earn a lot of money. He’d make a lot less fighting the top 5/6 in the division and would likely get beat. Agree though that Marsh needs to move past it.

It’s like Frank W’s stuff. Parker fighting poor opposition but they constantly talk about Canelo. He’ll do the same with Avanesyan- have him beating overmatched opponents and then call out the unrealistic money fights.

Press Release | Katie Taylor vs. Firuza Sharipova is Set For Benn-Algieri Card

Katie Taylor will defend her WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine Lightweight crowns against WBA Mandatory Challenger Firuza Sharipova on the same night that Welterweight star Conor Benn steps up against former World Champion Chris Algieri at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on Saturday December 11, live worldwide on DAZN.

Irish sensation Taylor (19-0, 6 KOs) is within touching distance of a huge showdown with Amanda Serrano in 2022 but must overcome a final hurdle in the shape of Kazakhstan’s Sharipova after cruising to another successful defence of her titles against the USA’s Jennifer Han at Emerald Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

Sharipova (14-1, 8 KOs) has picked up titles at Super-Featherweight, Lightweight and Super-Lightweight since joining the professional ranks in May 2016, and the 27-year-old from Taraz is ranked at No.1 in the world at Lightweight by the WBA having remained undefeated since a shock four-round points loss on her debut.

Chatteris Featherweight talent Jordan Gill (26-1, 7 KOs) returns to the ring to challenge EBU European Featherweight Champion Karim Guerfi (30-5, 9 KOs) after scoring behind closed doors wins over Reece Bellotti in August 2020 and Cesar Juarez in February 2021 to land the WBA International Title.

France’s Guerfi became a two-weight European Champion by outpointing Andoni Gago in Marbella, Spain earlier this year to land the 126lbs strap. The 34-year-old from Manosque previously held the EBU Bantamweight Title before losing it to undefeated Scottish talent Lee McGregor at the Bolton Whites Hotel in March.

‘The Welsh Wizard’ Joe Cordina (13-0, 8 KOs) continues his push for Super-Featherweight World Title action in 2020 after scoring a sensational first round knockout win over the USA’s Joshuah Hernandez at Fight Camp in August, former European, British and Commonwealth Super-Lightweight Champion Robbie Davies Jr (21-3, 14 KOs) fights for the second time under new trainer Shane McGuigan, undefeated Belfast Middleweight talent Caoimhin Agyarko (9-0, 6 KOs) makes his Matchroom debut, former Team GB star Calum French makes his professional debut at Super-Lightweight, Tokyo Olympian Peter McGrail (1-0) steps though the ropes for the seconds time as a pro and is joined on the bill by his debutant brother Joe McGrail, while former professional footballer Paddy Lacey (1-0) looks to build on his pro debut win over Stanko Jermelic last month.

"I'm looking forward to ending the year on a high with another defence of my titles,” said Taylor. “I know there are some huge fights out there for me in 2022 but for now my sole focus is on December 11 and this mandatory defence against Sharipova."
