Four Belts? What does that really mean

Post by Grant »

Canelo is a Champion for sure. But in the past they used to call what he is doing as fighting contenders. Once all Champions were 'Unified'. The number of belts really doesn't have to mean anything historically. A top ten fighter (not necessarily talking about Plant here) wins a belt and then is given championship status. I dunno how others think but I don't give a toss how many belts he has because when he either retires or is beaten they will find a way to divide the division again

True, but very few go to the trouble of unifying. Canelo deserves legit credit for what he has done at 168, while setting up every one of his victims - that you call contenders - for life.

When I was a kid the only belts that mattered was the WBA/WBC/IBF, while the WBO was seen more as a "welcome to the top fifteen or ten" achievement. Nowadays the WBO is looked upon as having the same status as the other three while the IBO/IBC belts are the "welcome to the top fifteen or ten" achievement.

I remember a time when winning the NABF/NABO titles was basically the same equivalency as winning the WBO title basically. If you were the best in North America you were basically seeing as a fringe contender or contender.

The IBF title was created, I think, the year I was born. So once upon a time only the WBA/WBC titles mattered, but for a long time the WBA title was seen as a secondary title--- for example, Ernie Terrell being made the WBA champion when Ali was the Lineal/WBC champion.

It will never happen, but, I'm of the opinion if somebody wins all four belts that basically they merge into one title and that the organizations should come together and create a new mandatory list where the top 3 in each organization should be put into a comprehensive top ten list for the undisputed champion to fight--- and allow the undisputed champion 3 voluntary defenses of his/her choosing.

The belts situation is a long-running bad joke. But, credit to any boxer who unifies them all. Canelo is the man in his division and that is all that, really, counts.

Only Canelo and Taylor have all four. The other two have another belt to collect. ;-)

Roy Jones held the WBC, WBA, IBF, IBO, NABF, WBF, and IBA lhw belts at the same time. None of these belts really mean that much.

He might as well have. Devin Haney got the WBC. Be nice to see them fight.
