Jaime Munguia, Gabriel Rosado In Talks For Fall Showdown

Jaime Munguia didn’t have to look far in search of his next challenger once he realized a title fight wasn’t next in store.

Talks continue to progress for a potential fall crossroads bout between Tijuana’s Munguia (37-0, 30 KOs) and Philadelphia’s Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KOs), representatives from both camps confirmed to BS.com. Such a bout would take place at middleweight, where Munguia—a former junior middleweight titlist—remains the number-one contender to both the WBC and WBO titles.

The building blocks for such a fight began in June, when both appeared and scored knockout wins on the same DAZN show this past June 19 in El Paso, Texas. Munguia stopped former title challenger Kamil Szeremeta (21-2, 5 KOs) after six rounds in the evening’s main event. Stealing the show that night, Rosado flattened previously unbeaten Bektemir ‘Bek Bully’ Melikuziev (7-1, 6 KOs) inside of three rounds in their super middleweight affair, having survived a first-round knockdown to produce what remains a leading candidate for 2021 Knockout of the Year.

Rosado has eyed a fight with Munguia ever since coming up just short in an unpopular twelve-round, split decision in favor of former middleweight titlist Daniel Jacobs last November 27 in Hollywood, Florida. The fight is one that has piqued the interest of Munguia’s co-promoters, Zanfer Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

Both boxers are certainly on board for the affair as well.

“In talks with Golden Boy to make this epic fight happen in the fall,” Rosado confirmed. “The people want it. It’s time to deliver!”

“Let’s make it happen,” Munguia noted Wednesday via social media, the short-and-sweet message accompanied by photos of the two boxers face to face following their respective wins in June.

Munguia has stopped his last four opponents, including three straight since moving up to middleweight last January. Prior to the move, Munguia crammed five title defenses in a fourteen-month span after claiming the WBO junior middleweight title in a May 2018 stoppage win over Sadam Ali.

Jaime Munguia and Gabriel Rosado are set for a 12-round middleweight main event on DAZN, coming Saturday, Nov. 13, from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Munguia (37-0, 30 KO) and Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KO) met up, kind of, at a virtual press conference to discuss and promote the fight. The veteran Rosado, 35, is coming off of a big upset win over Bektemir Melikuziev, while the 24-year-old Munguia beat Kamil Szeremta after six rounds, both bouts coming on the same June 19 card in Texas.

“I think the last couple fights since I actually linked up with Freddie Roach, I think it shows. This is an improved Gabe Rosado. I have experience; I’m putting in the work. Yes, my record is deceiving. I wasn’t the guy with the machine behind me, with the big promoters, big management behind me, so a lot of times, I went into fights where the other guy was the favorite. And there have been fights that should have gone my way, where I got the shit-end of the stick. And it showed in the Danny Jacobs fight. I just saw that fight, and I was like, ‘wow, clearly I out-boxed him.’ But you know, that’s just the beauty of it, that the fans get to see it, and the fans at the end of the day can’t be fooled. I made a statement in my last fight, which I think will be Knockout of the Year. So we’re excited about this Munguia fight.

He could have gone with his mandatory, so you have to respect the guy that says, ‘no, I want Rosado.’ He is willing to give the fans what they want, and that’s what makes this fight special, that t’s a fight that the fans asked for. In boxing nowadays, with the politics, it’s hard to give the fans what they want. This right here is just like an early Christmas gift for the fans. It’s gonna be lit.”

“I think he is a good challenge for me. I have always seen him fight great fighters, and so we were really interested when the fight was offered. I think this will be a great fight for all fight fans and a great fight for me.

“Our strategy right now is to focus on working on my general boxing skills. Making sure I keep my distance, keeping my hands up. We noticed that Rosado had an excellent right punch in his last fight, so we want to prepare to prevent him from giving him that advantage. We have been working a lot on my speed and making sure I can move.

“Yes, I won a world title at 24. But also, all these years I have gained a lot of experience. I feel like my boxing has improved, and we are ready for bigger challenges. After Rosado, there has been a lot of talk about a fight with Derevyanchenko, Jacobs, and Golovkin.

“This is going to be a fun night, a night full of punches. It will be a war. Everyone knows that Mexico vs Puerto Rico are always great fights. I honestly see a very motivated Gabe Rosado. Orange County will be represented on November 13th as Santa Ana’s Alexis “Lex” Rocha (17-1, 11KOs) faces off against Jeovanis Barraza (22-1, 15KOs) of Barranquilla, Colombia, in a 10-round welterweight co-main event for Munguia vs. Rosado at Anaheim's Honda Center.

The welterweight fight will be preceded by a 10-round middleweight bout between top contender D’Mitrus Ballard (20-0-1, 11KOs) of Temple Hill, Maryland, and Mexico’s Paul Valenzuela, Jr. (26-9, 17KOs).

The DAZN show opener will feature Mexico’s undefeated, heavy-handed, lightweight rising star, William Zepeda (23-0, 21KOs), facing off against Miami’s John Moralde (24-4, 13KOs) in a 10-round fight for the WBA Continental America’s Lightweight title. Headlining the Golden Boy Fight Night portion of the night, live on Facebook Watch, Arley Muncino (29-3-2, 10 KOs) of Monterey, Mexico will meet Jackie Calvo (14-6-2, 1KO) of Mexico City in a 10-round female flyweight battle.

The Pride of Mexicali, Diego De La Hoya (22-1, 10KOs) will make his return to the ring facing off against Guadalajara’s Jose Gonzalez (23-9-1, 13KOs) in a 10-round featherweight event.

Alejandro Reyes (4-0, 3KOs) of Los Angeles will participate in a 4-round super lightweight fight against Osmel Mayorga (2-2, 1KO) of Miami, Fl.

Finally, San Diego’s rising prospect, Jorge Chavez, will make his pro debut in a 4-round super featherweight bout against Mexico City’s Gilberto Aguilar (0-3).

119-109 Munguia for me but still an entertaining fight, Rosado never won much but still in every round and he's nails, takes some shot, I thought he jabbed well throughout and was more dangerous as the fight wore on but Munguia has the quality and workrate along with the variety, really teed off on Rosado to head and body, Rosado's problem was the success he had came at end of rounds when he'd been getting combo'd for the majority before, still good watch and Munguia was impressive again
