it seems basically any fighter cut on/around the eye gains the power to become the ref and decide if the fight will continue or not, no matter what their condition is. just have to say they cant see etc

when this happens on a foul before the scores become official , it essentially allows them to wipe out what would be almost sure losses , like arroyo did pretty blatantly vs martinez

should doctors/refs be more critical, or basically is there no way to change this situation

100% they should be able to assess the eye independently and without doing the how many fingers am I holding up.

Arroyo had cuts which weren’t too bad. It’s not like he had swelling that closed the eye or anything.

The doctor should be able to say ‘there’s nothing I can see that should prevent him from being able to see’ and if the fighter still protests and doesn’t want to continue then he loses.

these days pretty much all i see is the fighter being asked, and if he says there's trouble seeing it's waved

I think you punnish your future paydays if its widely seen as a quit.

That cut was bleeding bad, Even if he could see in the corner when the Dr had his fingers up, he wasnt going to be able to see 20 seconds later when the vassaline gets punched out of it and it starts pissing blood into his eye again. Which makes it a hard one. Obviosly we want people to grit it out, but is that fair? why should he be disadvantaged because he got headbutted.

Not like (excluding the cut) the fight had gone worse for him than expected. It was actualy going better than expected i think. Arroyo had at least hurt Martinez which wasnt what most though would happen and was in the fight.

he dropped him in the first, then got battered from there out and looked about to get stopped . his body language was awful even at the end of the first

his face was totally wiped and the cut was above his field of vision yet he still claimed he couldnt see what the doctor was holding up.

Arroyo shat the bed I'm afraid to say, he was starting to unravel but he literally just dropped Martinez the previous round and although Martinez wasn't badly hurt it wasn't a flash knockdown like Eddie said, I can't understand why Arroyo would lose heart so quickly, he's always been durable, shades of Khan against Crawford,
