Keith Thurman: “I’m Willing To Fight Crawford Eight Months From Now”

'Keith Thurman: “I’m Willing To Fight Crawford Eight Months From Now”'

In the not so distant past, Keith Thurman occupied the consensus number one in the welterweight division. In a four-fight span from 2015-2017, Thurman handed defeats to Robert Guerrero, Luis Collazo, Shawn Porter, and Danny Garcia – all of whom at some point, were world champions.

However, following his split decision victory over Garcia, Thurman’s career has spiraled into the land of inactivity. While he’s fought only twice since unifying the welterweight division, Thurman is hard at work as he prepares to make his return.

In the meantime, the former 147-pound belt holder admits to watching plenty of boxing in his spare time. Amongst the names he finds himself observing is current WBO champion Terence “Bud” Crawford. With the pound-for-pound star coming off arguably the biggest victory of his career this past weekend, a tenth-round stoppage over former two-time champion Shawn Porter, Thurman has now thrown his hat in the mix as a possible opponent.

“I’m going to get back in the ring shortly,” said Thurman during an interview with The Athletic. “I’d be more than happy, more than willing, to step in the ring with “Bud” Crawford next summer. I’m willing to fight Crawford eight months from now.”

Thurman’s willingness to face Crawford is likely to come with a bit of skepticism. Although the 33-year-old was once considered the top dog of the division, constant injuries have taken away all of his momentum.

In his most recent ring appearance, Thurman gave future Hall of Famer Manny Pacquiao, all he could handle. Regardless of the Florida native suffering the first loss of his career, Pacquiao has openly confessed that Thurman was one of the more challenging fights of his career.

Since then, Thurman has been forced to sit on the sidelines as he nurses more injuries. As for Crawford, he’s long expressed a desire to face Thurman in the ring. Well before the Omaha, Nebraska, native signed on the dotted line to take on Porter, he viewed a clash with Thurman as a much bigger event, going as far as to say Thurman was “the number one guy in the division whether anyone likes it or not.”

Although Thurman is absent of any world titles at the moment, considering his stature and the ambitions of Crawford, Thurman is convinced that he’s the exact fighter Crawford should be taking on.

“He seems like somebody who, of course, wants accolades on his record,” continued Thurman. “He wants these titles in his possession. He also wants the legacy that has names that are part of history.”

Keith Thurman’s next bout hasn’t been announced yet, but assuming it takes place around March, then the American would be celebrating his five-year anniversary of the most recent victory he’s scored against a top-ten world-rated welterweight.

Since then, he was forced to endure a lot of punishment during his majority decision victory over Josesito Lopez. And was subsequently decked en route to being upset by the 40½ year old past-his-prime iteration of Manny Pacquiao.

The 33-year-old Keith Thurman has been removed from The RING, ESPN, TBRB & BoxRec rankings due to inactivity, because he hasn’t fought for 2½ years.

Thurman needs to be sacraficed to young blood, not crawford. Boots, Ortiz or Connor Benn.

Thurman won't fight a top 5 guy, you can bank on that. He's talking December or January. We'll see, if he fights or just keeps talking.

By next Summer, Thurman will be on a 3-year winless streak. The last time he won a fight by more than a 7-5 margin was in 2015.

I don't think Crawford necessarily has a lot of better options commercially, but this option sucks too. Thurman isn't even healthy enough to make a comeback trail before fighting Crawford. Dude's gonna be like Glazkov, getting into the ring with an existing injury and buckling in round 1.

Boxing fans know he is a few years off his prime, injury prone, and a little delicate. Anyone with his weaknesses is no match for Bud. I can't see it generating the sort of interest needed to get the money Crawford would demand, let alone anything left for Thurman. He was already slightly irrelevant by the time Pac beat him, and hasn't done anything in the ring to change that.
It sounds a little like a call out to cash out, and Crawford is the biggest money name he can think of.

Thurman would get stopped by Crawford or Spence with the body shots they throw.

He's desperately trying to keep himself relevant, but to be honest it's only his gift of gab that keeps him in the conversation.

He was once a great boxer, but I think Virgil Ortiz or Ennis stop him too. He wants to cash out.

Thurman should move up to 154 and rematch Danny. That would be a decent cash-out for whoever lost and a boost to something more lucrative for the winner. Maybe Spence or TCraw moving up. :maybe:

That's an idea. Danny brings a large audience.
But ever since Thurman lost his belt, it's been a 'who needs him'
It's not really his fault either, the injury layoffs made one of the divisions most skilled fighters (at the time) drift out of the spotlight. Then to come back and get wasted by old man Manny took all the remaining gloss off him.
Then nothing for over two years, and he's calling out Crawford?
No. That isn't even safe.
If Thurman wants a fight, throw him in with Broner.

I am traditionally a Thurman fan, but I just don't care about him anymore.

Crawford would punish him severely.

Keith needs to be at his best to hang with Bud, but he's a long way from that.
