Undercard Press Release

Super bantamweight contender Aaron Alameda will square off against Mexico’s Angel Contreras in an eight-round battle, plus Mayweather Promotions stablemates duel as unbeaten Rock Myrthil faces Kevin Johnson in a 10-round super lightweight tilt, on the non-televised undercard this Saturday, November 27 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

The event is headlined by undefeated super bantamweight world champions squaring off as WBC champion Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa and WBO champion Stephen “Cool Boy Steph” Fulton Jr. meet in a title unification live on SHOWTIME® in the main event of the telecast beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com.

The non-televised lineup will also see Reno, Nevada’s Kenny Davis Jr. (7-2-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round lightweight duel against McAllen, Texas-native Nelson Hampton (7-4, 4 KOs), the pro debut of 19-year-old Albert Gonzalez as he takes on Washington, D.C.’s Chamar Flowers (1-1) in a four-round featherweight bout and Macon, Georgia’s Mikhail Montgomery (3-0, 2 KOs) in a four-round featherweight fight.

The 28-year-old Alameda (25-2, 13 KOs) will look to return to form on November 27 after back-to-back defeats. Alameda was able to end Luis Nery’s knockout streak in September 2020, losing by decision in a vacant world title fight, and most recently dropped a narrow decision to former champion Angelo Leo in June. Prior to the Nery fight, the Sonora, Mexico native had back-to-back knockouts over Jordan Escobar and Breilor Teran. A pro since 2014, his previous action in the U.S. prior to his two most recent fights saw him earn a sixth-round knockout over Andre Wilson in 2016. He will be opposed by the 27-year-old Contreras (11-4-2, 6 KOs), who most recently scored an upset victory in August over previously unbeaten John Dato. The Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico native has fought three times in 2021, battling the undefeated Jalan Walker to a split-draw in April and losing a decision to Ramon Cardenas in February.

Fighting out of Los Angeles, California, the 29-year-old Myrthil (17-0, 13 KOs) discovered boxing at age 18, after his family relocated from Haiti to the United States. Following a stellar amateur career, Myrthil made his pro debut in January 2017 with a second-round TKO over Allan Varela in Tijuana, Mexico. In September 2019, he won an eight-round unanimous decision over Jonathan Steele in Las Vegas. The performance caught the eye of Floyd Mayweather, who sat ringside for that bout and ultimately signed Myrthil to his Mayweather Promotions outfit. Most recently, Myrthil outpointed Johnny Rodriguez over eight rounds in February 2020. He will be facing the Detroit-native Johnson (9-2, 5 KOs), who now lives and trains in Las Vegas. The 29-year-old returns to action after defeating the previously unbeaten Luis Salazar by knockout in May. Johnson has fought professionally since 2016 and his two career defeats have come to then-unbeaten fighters Richardson Hitchins and Fazliddin Gaibnazarov.

Fight Picks: Stephen Fulton vs. Brandon Figueroa

Here’s how the experts see it:

THE RING MAGAZINE/RINGTV.COM

TOM GRAY: FULTON UD
“Figueroa is an excellent offensive force and his strength, aggression and heart cannot be underestimated. However, Fulton has all the attributes to make this a boxing match and if it’s a boxing match then he wins. I foresee a comfortable decision in the 117-111 range.”

ANSON WAINWRIGHT: FULTON UD
“I’ve watched Fulton from a far having been at his pro debut and written a New Faces feature on him and I think he’s a well-rounded fighter coming into his own. Conversely, I’d never been hugely impressed by Figueroa until his most recently fight when he was terrific in beating Nery which, to me, is the best win on either man’s ledgers. He’ll bring the fire, but I think Fulton’s movement will take the sting out of the battle and slowly but surely he’ll pick away and win a competitive but unanimous decision.”

LEE GROVES: FULTON PTS
“Figueroa showed himself to be a formidable force in stopping Luis Nery last time out, and in beating Angelo Leo, Fulton not only showed versatility but almost inhuman durability in absorbing Leo’s wicked body shots. Based on the Leo fight, I think that Fulton has the skills and toughness to take what the man I call “The Weslaco Whirlwind” can dish out while also finding enough holes in the Texan’s defense to win a hard-fought decision.”

MICHAEL WOODS: FULTON UD
“Fulton is a guy who would be that much more ahead of the pack if it weren’t for the brutally rude interruption of normalcy brought on by the global pandemic. Fulton’s skill set suggests he will keep ascending and that he wins a unanimous decision. His ability to keep his head and be effective in the trench means “The Heartbreaker” will take his first L.”

MARTY MULCAHEY: FULTON UD
“A fantastic matchup of two champions in their physical primes… what a concept! Because of this it is a very tough fight to pick, and a wise bettor may find the draw odds to his liking? When I find myself having to choose between boxing equals, I will always lean toward the boxer with the faster hands (rather than power or size and reach advantages, all of which Figueroa holds). That is Fulton in my opinion. I also see this fight going the distance giving Fulton the time to squeak out a unanimous decision by the slightest of margins by winning the championship rounds.”

MICHAEL MONTERO: FULTON UD
“Although Figueroa is a little taller and longer and the harder puncher, Fulton is more skilled and has the tighter guard. Furthermore, the Texas native is recovering from COVID and it remains to be seen how that may affect his performance. After some close early rounds, the kid from Philly will pick off Figueroa’s punches and land sharp counters. Give me “Cool Boy Steph” by unanimous decision, 117-111.”

NORM FRAUENHEIM: FIGUEROA TKO 10
“Figueroa is on a roll – don’t expect it to end against Stephen Fulton. Figueroa has scored nine stoppages in his last 10 bouts. He stumbled two years ago in a split draw with Julio Ceja, but he immediately regained his momentum, scoring successive stoppages: first Damien Vazquez and then Luis Nery in a punishing exhibition of aggressiveness in May. Figueroa calls himself “The Heartbreaker.” He does more than break hearts. He breaks down opponents with relentless body blows, which figure to exhaust and then beat Fulton into a late-round stoppage.”

BOXING INSIDERS

DUKE MCKENZIE (FORMER THREE-DIVISION TITLEHOLDER/TV ANALYST): FULTON UD
“I like the look of this one because both like to fight on the inside. Fulton is a little shorter in height and reach so will have to work harder to get inside and that’s exactly where he needs to be. Figueroa also likes it up close but his longer arms may not be as quick at putting combinations together. Both are fair punchers. I would expect the slightly more physically mature Fulton to edge it on the inside. I think there’s a lot more to come from both boxers, neither has peaked yet and they will surely bring out the best in one another. I pick Fulton, he’s the best all-rounder, via unanimous decision.”

TONY TOLJ (MANAGER): FIGUEROA UD
“I think it’s going to be the fight of the weekend for sure. Fulton is a very talented and classy fighter but my gut – and it’s a big gut at that (laughs) – tells me Figueroa. Figueroa is tough as nails and I believe he will grind his way to victory in an 8-4, 7-5 kind of fight. Figueroa by 12-round unanimous decision.”

JASON MOLONEY (BANTAMWEIGHT CONTENDER): FIGUEROA UD
“I find this one a tough fight to pick. Two very different and contrasting styles. Both guys are very solid fighters, but I was really impressed by Figueroa and the way he was able to take out Nery in his last fight. I think that his toughness along with his awkward style and high output will cause Fulton problems and for that reason I’m tipping Figueroa in a good, close fight by 12-round unanimous decision.”

ANDREW MOLONEY (JUNIOR BANTAMWEIGHT CONTENDER): FULTON UD
“This should be a really good fight. I’m expecting Figueroa to bring a lot of pressure and make an exciting fight, but I believe that Fulton will be too sharp and too skillful. I see Fulton winning a unanimous decision or possibly scoring a late stoppage.”

RAUL MARQUEZ (FORMER WORLD CHAMPION/COMMENTATOR): FULTON PTS
“Fulton has the better skills and has shown that he can box and go toe-to-toe. Figueroa is non-stop action; the real-life energizer bunny. As long as Fulton doesn’t run out of gas. He should be able to win by decision.”

JOLENE MIZZONE (MATCHMAKER, MAIN EVENTS): FULTON UD
“I went back and forth with who to pick but I’m going to have to go with Fulton who I think is the better boxer. I always lean towards the boxer in matches like this. If Fulton’s head is right and camp was good, he should pull it off but it could become a draw in Las Vegas.”

ROBERT DIAZ (MATCHMAKER, GOLDEN BOY): FULTON UD
“Figueroa is straight forward and will come at you and is not worried if he gets hit as long as he can land his. His condition is a major plus – as you know he can go the 12 hard rounds. Fulton is more versatile and will look to box and counter. It will be entertaining and a must-watch to see who can impose their style over the other. In the end, as the saying goes, styles make fights. I have to go with Fulton by unanimous decision in this one.”

WAYNE MCCULLOUGH (TRAINER): FIGUEROA TKO
“The fight between Stephen Fulton and Brandon Figueroa will probably end with both guys trading big shots. Fulton is a littler slicker but carries his hands low leaving himself open for head shots. Figueroa is non-stop and switches his stance around a lot. He may arguably hit a little harder than Fulton and could end up dropping him to win a late stoppage, but if it goes the distance then Fulton may shade a close encounter. It’s a tricky one, I’ll go with Figueroa.”

RUDY HERNANDEZ (TRAINER): FULTON PTS
“I think Fulton has a very, very slight edge in his skills to pull out a close decision against the power of Figueroa. I wouldn’t be surprised if the fight ends in a draw either.”

FERNANDO BELTRAN (PROMOTER, ZANFER PROMOTIONS): FIGUEROA KO
“I believe Figueroa has a big and strong hook to the body. That’s why I think he will KO Fulton in the later rounds.

OSWALDO KULCHE (PROMOTER, PROMOCIONES DEL PUEBLO): FULTON PTS
“Fulton’s speed will make him my favorite. He is more complete. I think Figueroa lacks defense and doesn’t have the power to take Fulton out.”

ALEX STEEDMAN (COMMENTATOR): FULTON PTS
“If Fulton fights like he did against Leo and Figueroa, does his usual thing, then this will be a terrific fight. Technically Fulton is better and faster, but Figueroa is relentless and I was surprised to see him such an underdog. I’ve always thought Figueroa loses as soon as he meets a quality fighter or one with a real dig, but I’m not sure Fulton fits the mold. If I was betting, I’d play Figueroa at the prices or by late-KO, but my pick is Fulton by decision.”

JOHN SCULLY (TRAINER): FIGUEROA PTS
“One of the best fights to be made today. I like Figueroa to come through with a hard-fought but solid decision win.”

Final Tally: Fulton 14-6

Brandon Figueroa: This Fight Might Be My Last At 122, I Might Move Up To 126

A win by Brandon Figueroa on Saturday will place every major junior featherweight title in the same gym.

It’s not the conflict of sharing a training facility with unified WBA/IBF titlist Murodjon ‘MJ’ Akhmadaliev (10-0, 7KOs) that would prevent an undisputed championship showdown, however; rather the question of Figueroa continuing to make the 122-pound limit.

Figueroa (22-0-1, 17KOs) is still pressed with the daunting task of having to get past Stephen Fulton (19-0, 8KOs) before arriving at that point. The two collide this Saturday, with Figueroa’s WBC junior featherweight title and Fulton’s WBO strap on the line in their Showtime main event which will air live from Park MGM in Las Vegas.

“I don’t know about how that will work out down the line,” Figueroa noted to BS.com ahead of this weekend’s unification bout. “This fight might be my last fight at 122. I might move up to 126.”

A potential move up in weight for Figueroa is hardly a surprising development. At 5’8”, the 24-year-old from Weslaco, Texas generally enjoys a significant size advantage over his competition and still growing into his frame. Figueroa turned pro just above the bantamweight limit more than six years ago as a teenager, moving up to the 122-pound division for good barely a year later where he has since remained.

The road to the title stage began in 2019, when Figueroa picked up a WBA interim belt which was eventually upgraded to the WBA “World” title. It is still the secondary version to the WBA “Super” belt that his gym mate Akhmadaliev—both of whom train out of Joel Diaz’s facility in Indio, California—btained along with the IBF belt in a January 2020 split decision win over Danny Roman.

Figueroa claimed his first true title this past May, overpowering unbeaten Luis Nery to wrest the WBC junior featherweight strap. The bout was made with the agreement that the winner would next face Philadelphia’s Fulton, who won the WBO belt in a twelve-round, unanimous decision over then-unbeaten titlist Angelo Leo in January.

Figueroa-Fulton was originally scheduled for this past September, only for Figueroa to test positive for Covid. The fight was pushed back by more than two months, fittingly eight days after Akhmadaliev lodged his second successful defense in a points win over late replacement Jose Velasquez.

The chances of a straight away undisputed championship were never realistic. Akhmadaliev remains on the hook to honor his WBA mandatory title defense, while the IBF has a scheduled title eliminator on December 11. A win by Fulton—who is a healthy betting favorite—could keep alive that dream, whereas a victory by Figueroa could see him hold the belts long enough for he and Akhmadaliev to pose with all four belts on display before moving on to the next step in his career.

“Definitely, I’m going to leave everything here at 122. Then, move on to 126 and start my legacy,” notes Figueroa.

Thanks for all of that Ruthie

I didn't realise the pundits were favouring Fulton so much.
Brandon dealt with Nery really well. He has momentum.
I still think this is a close fight, and neither guy knows how to be boring, so it's going to be all action.
Brandon talking about moving up right before the weigh in day disturbs me, I hope he is managing his weight for this fight at least.

Might try finding a stream for this is one finishes early.

Its his only chance against a better slightly faster guy.
I really don't know why this fight has slipped so quietly along
It's a unification between two unbeaten young champions both in their prime, maybe not even peak, one a banger, one a boxer.
What isn't to like about that? :maybe:

I'm leaning a bit towards Fulton's win, but this fight is evenly matched, a one of the best today. Anythinhg won't be surprising and it gotta be spectacular.

If Brandon is fully recovered and can maintain his usual workrate, he should be in this fight.
I have it 60/40 to Fulton, still should be good.

Me too! :box:
Ever since it was announced, I thought: finally two champs in their prime in a unification.
This forum should be all over this fight!
Also, I don't have a favourite, so I can relax and enjoy the action, and there will be be plenty of it hopefully if Figueroa is at full health.

Fulton - Figueroa could be one of the best bouts of 2021 and it is the right size arena to enjoy the action. Do not overlook Alexandro Santiago on the undercard. "Peque" ("Small") is a very slick and crafty boxer who will be facing off against one of the Russell brothers. Will be second row ringside F-13. If in house please stop by and say howdy.

For sure, he is great to watch.
But if Figgy is fit and healthy, he is going to throw a lot of leather.
These guys are still at that invincible age, they don't know how to lose as pros, and I expect it to end in tears.

Figueroa: People Have Underestimated Me So Much That I Don't Even Care Anymore

Brandon Figueroa has grown so accustomed to playing the role of dismissed underdog that he can’t even recall what it’s like to have anyone’s support.

It has worked out well for the unbeaten junior featherweight, who faces his second straight undefeated divisional titlist this weekend. Figueroa (22-0-1, 17KOs) puts his recently acquired WBC title on the line versus unbeaten WBO titleholder Stephen Fulton (19-0, 8KOs) this Saturday at Park MGM in Las Vegas.

Fulton is a -300 favorite to prevail according to BetMGM, similar to Luis Nery (31-1, 24KOs) ahead of his intended WBC title defense versus Figueroa this past May. Figueroa went on to win by seventh-round knockout, winning the belt and moving forward with this weekend’s unification bout. The unbeaten Texan is confident of history repeating itself.

“I come to do my job, execute my game plan. Same thing with Nery,” Figueroa told BS.com during a recent virtual press conference ahead of Saturday’s Showtime-televised main event. “A lot of people underestimated me. My game plan is always the same. I went in the ring to do what I (had) to do and I got him out of there.

“This time is no different. It’s the same story. People have underestimated me so much that I don’t even care anymore.”

Figueroa, 23, grew into the junior featherweight division by his second full year as a pro, having campaigned at the weight ever since. At 5’8”, he normally enjoys a significant size advantage over his foes. It was the case versus Nery and again this weekend against the 5’6 ½” Fulton, though Figueroa has served as a significant underdog in both scenarios. There never a hesitation to take either fight, nor has the thought of losing even entered the conversation.

“I know my abilities. My team knows my abilities,” Figueroa notes. “They know my potential and what I’m capable of inside the ring, even though I don’t look like a typical fighter, like I’m gonna dominate.”
