IMO A good businessman, knows the ins and outs of the business, keeps his cash cows protected, but vindictive and petty. I wouldn't complain about been in Khan/Kevin Mitchells shoes.
However anyone like to make a list of fighters who shall we say didn't do too well under Mr Warren, let me start:
Witter, Vanzie......please continue alongside your insights

He's been the leading promoter in Britain for years now, everytime a competitor looks to challenge him Warren has come out on top in the long run.
He's guided some boxers careers well and earnt them great money.
He's been accused of a few things along the way , by various boxers, but he normally comes up smelling of roses.

i agree with you somewhat, though he can deliver the big occasion it seems he gets even more protective of whomever's enhanced status...pundit wrote:One of the guys responsbile for the dire state of boxing.
when he was with sky, he had an exclusive contract, locking out other british promoters. also, the international fights sky showed around 2004-5 seemed to have been hand chosen by Mr Allegedly - chosen to tie in with the likes of hatton, harrison & Calzaghe. quite limited really
Now that Warren has gone, we're getting loads of good British fights, lots of varied intrenational fare, good riddance I say
When he had his Showtime contract, Yanks were groaning about the Warren showcases they were being forcefed. In the pre 'Good Fights' days that is.
I hope to hell he doesn't pick on the promising Allan Green, for Calzaghe. What the fack would that prove?
Good businessman but incredibly over-defensive and seems to take any questioning of his guidance of a fighters career as an outright assault on his family, integrity and life!
Would have made a hilarious politician.
He should put himself in the fans shoes for once and in the long run he might make himself even more money....

When Warren first got into pro boxing he was a breath of fresh air after years of the Barrett, Duff, Levene cartel. He was good for boxing and good for the boxers. However, after he saw the cartel off and became top dog in Britain he almost immediately changed his approach and became like those 3 had been.
Having said that, maybe that is the only blueprint that works if you want to remain in power.

Good at what he does but his self serving column in the NOTW should have been pulled ages ago. Any fighter not signed to him gets slagged off and casual fans who don't know the score might get the wrong idea.
His massive role in the rise of the WBO was regrettable too. Again casual fans thought/think that they are watching world championship boxing when most of the time they're watching fringe contender championship boxing.

you can blame barry hearn for that as well. eubank couldn't lose a decision even when he did sod all.Flump wrote:Good at what he does but his self serving column in the NOTW should have been pulled ages ago. You're absolutely right. And we complain about Sven Ottke...viciousmaussa wrote:you can blame barry hearn for that as well. eubank couldn't lose a decision even when he did sod all.Flump wrote:Good at what he does but his self serving column in the NOTW should have been pulled ages ago. yes, but what a chore watching some of these pairing that are apparently supposed to be called "fights". in 2004/5 at one point Hatton and Calzaghe seemed ready to give up, things were so bad.Max Molyneux wrote:Well he made Hatton and Calzaghe champs without barely a mark on them with undefeated records and made them millionares.
Most Boxers like Benn said he was a good promotor though.
Without him, Bruno wouldn't of been a champ either.
I'll ask this, how much does Warren respect the fans? Why did good american fights get witheld from us when warren's stable were on sky in anothger of those unhealthy exclusive contracts? Why was the domestic scene so dreadful, like Enzo Macca knocking over x and y import?
Well, he steers clear of domestic (British)and european titles, well knownto make fighters drop them or avoid them and instead get them WBU titles instead.
Would prefer to prolong a fighetrs career with easy WBU defences than risk it with a British title shot, things is no one is fooled, thee WBU defnces barely make a paragraph in the newspapers.

He's contributed a great deal, in my opinion, to the ongoing bastardisation of the concept of world titles in boxing. Its a shame he can't operate his business within the boundaries of legitimate championships. In Britain there are area, British, Commonwealth & European championships to contend with, without the need for intercontinental or penta-continental titles, let alone WBU belts.
Boxing is quite a unique sport, in this regard. You could not book a football ground a promote a match as being for the "FA Cup Final" or the "World Cup Final" and hope to dupe punters into buying tickets for it, yet in boxing promoters are free to do this.
I think that the practice of putting on "world title fights" between boxers from your own stable (eg, Magee vs Takaloo) who are frankly nowhere near the best in the world in their weight class, is something that a businessman should be prosecuted for. Its bogus and dishonest.
On the other hand, Warren has brought a lot of good fighters to this country, he's promoted some of the best fights and shows that Britain has seen, and he's made a lot of money for himself and his boxers.
Its just a shame that he has contributed to the demise of the sport through degrading the concept of "world champion". I suppose he'd argue that he wasn't the first, and won't be the last.
