Imagine the stick that the working class, women, black and Welsh people got when they started going to uni or working in an office....

I know, am personally very good friends with, a family of travellers who, one, the woman, is employed by York city council to educate travelers on site, the brother is a graduate who designs bridges. The other two brothers are city and guilds electricians and bricklayer. It does happen

Also, my friend is helping my son do his a level maths. He refused payment. He's the former Yorkshire light heavyweight elite champion. He couldn't read or write until he was 20. He's doing a PhD now.

Only until 11 or 12. The teacher's don't mark them as absent. They put a "t" in the register meaning traveller time. My wife has been a teaching assistant for 11 years, it's true.

I believe you, it's a real shame for those kids, that their families put them in that situation. It's holding them back, and ultimately holding back the community as a whole.

I was from a poor family, but the one thing my mum always banged on about was the value of education. I'm hardly a raging success, but nonetheless, it's stood me in good stead.

To be fair, they're not the best behaved. My mrs had a 5 year old traveller boy put his hand up and say "I need a piss" she told him off for being rude and told him not to do it again, he apologised and put his hand up and said "I need a piss, miss"!

Yep - universities nowadays are full of all backgrounds - as different as some wish to portray Travellers, they really are nothing different to most white working class.

I worked in an office environment with person from Traveller background. If you had to guess which of us was from Traveller background I do not think he would have been many people's first guess.

As said; it's a stereotype from a small my nority of idiots .. bit like the stereotype of all council estate kids are chavs .. it's just the idiots are easier to see and hear.

Travellers don't get much stick because they are a traveller, they get it when they conform to the negative stereotype, so if one of them does confirm to that stereotype they are making that trouble for themselves.

Anyone know whether the story about BJS stabbing another traveller and being dropped etc in a fight is true?

Travellers complain about being victimised and subject to unfair stereotypes ... but then when you encounter them they seem to live up to those exact sterotypes.

Case in point .... about six months ago four Traveller caravans appeared overnight in a recreational playing field not far from where I live. Needless to say the local community Facebook group was suddenly awash with chatter on the issue and split down the middle, with some wanting them moved on swiftly and others leaping to their defense and saying not to be judgemental/unfair/racist ... yada yada.

After just four days of ... surprise surprise ... reports of local break ins, human jobbies on the playing field, and some women being harassed the Facebook page flipped and EVERYONE wanted them moved on fast.

They were, and then the council had to spend a couple days clearing up and decontaminating the site.

This is the thing. You want to give people the benefit of the doubt and be fair and open-minded, and they just take you for a fool. The lesson is to cut through the bullshit and trust your instincts instead.

I've quoted several examples of travellers doing good. I live in a very white city but know two black blokes who both sell drugs. Don't tar everyone with the same brush. Go to Henry's gym in York and tell me that's not for the community.

Everyone and Anyone will always be able to tell off travellers or others doing good for the community ,, i've got no doubt

I doubt you will ever see , Tyson , Shane , Tommy , Peter or Hughie Fury , pulling up in a caravan on the local croft , shitting on the grass , emptying piss buckets , on the shrub , knocking on doors demanding to pave your driveway , fix your roof ,, or walking in your garden helping themselves to your kids bikes , your ladders ,, , bashing the fook out of your brother and best mate in the local , usually team handed .

But because this high profile familly with money don't do it , no one can say a lot of the others don't ....... Or you can go to say Middleton near Manchester , and ask around abut the travellers who don't travel but live in council houses ,, the ones who 40 years ago terrorised the estate for years ,, standover men , violent bullies , big familly who would'nt hesitate to go around to a house , pub whatever to give someone a seeing too e ct ect , and only stopped whan another traveller familly who were worse moved in the estate and took over from them

These people have lived in council houses and some in private houses for years , they have had more than enough time to settle into normal lifestyle , but yet go on U tube and see them still carrying on posting shite and rubbish , and the only difference between them and there grandfathers is , there was no u TUBE 40 YEARS AGO ,, BUT MOST OF THESE TRAVELLER FAMILLYS , are still excatly the same , and they wonder why people dislike them , .
